Inside this issue History of Spanish 1 AA in Toronto Victor M Historia de la Oficina intergrupal 2 de habla Hispana de la ciudad de Toronto Victor M History of 3 Pembroke AA Jack B See the Archivist s Blog http area83archivist blogspot com Contributions to The Eighty Three should be sent to archivisit area83aa org Volume 8 No 1 March 2012 The history of Spanish Alcoholics Anonymous in Toronto dates back to the beginning of 1984 when two men Carlos CH and Ricardo X met through a social worker that knew they were alcoholics in recovery and a need they had to get together with people that have the problem of alcoholism They talked and understood the need they had to have a group for the Spanish community who have the disease They found a place in the San Juan Baptist Church at the intersection of Dundas Ave West and Grace St They had their first meeting on Saturday 21 April 1984 which was attended by six people all of them members of Alcoholics Anonymous from different groups and different countries That night they agreed to name the group which they called Group of Alcoholics Anonymous Nueva Esperanza After a couple of months they were asked to move out because the church needed the place for something else The next meeting was held in the house of a member of the group where they celebrated the anniversary of one of the members Julio C Later they found another place in the2. also anti AA meetings which were held appropriately in the Copeland Hotel Regular AA meetings were held also at other locations Whit s office the Zion Lutheran Church and at the Township Office In 1955 according to the records Pembroke joined what was then called the Northern Area Today it would have been known as a district The Barry s Bay Group was founded in 1956 In 1957 the Northern Area was divided into three parts the Northwestern Northeastern and Algonquin The Petawawa Group began at the Canadian Forces Base in Petawawa and the River Group started meeting at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church located at Deep River In 1958 the Upper Ottawa Valley District was established and contained seven groups The feminists will be pleased to know that the first female member Florence M joined the Pembroke Group in 1960 1961 saw the start of meetings in Fort Coulonge held in the home of of Cob C In 1962 the first Convention was held in the lion s Club Halland about 100 attended it The Locksley Group was formed July 17 1965 and the Pembroke East Group started on Oct 15 1974 The Valley had made itself known when Earl H was elected as delegate to the GSO in New York City by the Eastern Ontario Assembly for 1975 and 1976 As AA continued to grow and expand the Upper Ottawa Valley District was restructured together with the other Districts in the Eastern Ontario Area Now there were to be three Districts Pembroke 9 Group
3. of our area Area 83 Ray Mitchell who came on Monday 26 of June 1995 The meeting was held in the local of our Spanish Intergroup and he recommended continuing the studying of the Service Manual In the month of September we had a visit from the DCM of the Spanish District of Montreal Jorge Lima which motivated us to have our own District At the next meeting the GSRs voted to take it back to their groups of obtain the group conscience of their own groups to approve the request for the formation of the Spanish District On Monday 2 October 1995 we held the election of the DCM of the Spanish District under the Third Legacy Procedure of the Service Manual Guillermo Rajo was elected as DCM of the Spanish District Carlos Chamale as Alternate DCM But Guillermo said he had some problems with the English Language so it was Carlos Chamale Who became the DCM and Guillermao Rajo was the new Alternate DCM In the next meeting Monday October 9 1995 we elected the secretary and treasurer In the same month we were invited to the Autumn Assembly at Kingston Ontario We had a meeting with the Delegate and the Treasurer and we game them our registration for the new District At the Spring Assembly of the following year we were officially affiliated with Area 83 International La historia de Alcoholicos Anonimos de Habla Hispana comienza en 1984 cuando 2 companeros Carlos Ch Y Ricardo X fueron puestos en contacto por una trabajadora social y ant
4. of the same year the Spanish Intergroup sent an invitation to all Spanish groups of the city of Toronto requesting all GSRs attend a special meeting to discuss the formation of a Spanish District On Wednesday the 8 of March the GSRs got together and after some discussion came to the conclusion of the necessity to have a meeting every week to study the Service Manual and prepare themselves to have a District and at the same meeting they formed a service committee with a Chair Secretary and Treasurer In the beginning the groups present were Unidad Renacimiento Una Luz en Toronto Amistad Sendero de Vida and Y Nuevo Amanecer and the next meeting the GSRs of the groups Amor Y Paz and Nueva Esperanza joing the rest of the groups From the Seventh Tradition of every meeting 50 was for the groups and 50 was sent to the Intergroup Office needs of the groups and the other 50 was for the Office of our Intergroup The meeting continued every week and after some time they concluded that was the moment to investigate all the procedures to form the new District In the following week a letter was sent to GSO in New York asking the possibilities of having a Spanish District in the City of Toronto The answer from GSO was that we had the right to have a Spanish District in Toronto but before we should talk to the delegate of the area we were located in and ask for sponsorship from the area concerned The next step we took was to invite the delegate

Church of St Peter that was located at the intersection of Bathurst and Bloor St West The group started to grow thanks to a Community Center that was in the same Church because they informed the public about the Alcoholics Anonymous group that was meeting in their premises They realized that they needed more meetings and found a place in the Canadian Native Center that was located in the area of College and Spadina but sometimes the people who owned the meeting place used the space for other activities and the group had no place for their meeting The group started getting visits of the Spanish AA groups from Montreal and they advised the Toronto Group of the need to have their own place The Toronto group followed their advice and rented a place at 528 College St They started meeting everyday from 8 00 PM to 10 00 PM Area 83 Archives Newsletter EER Monday to Sunday This is the history of the first Spanish AA Group in the city of Toronto The second AA Spanish Group was The Group Unidad which held the first meeting the 14 of April of 1986 in one room of the Church of St Guadalupe situated in the Rogers and old Weston Rd They prese at 1049 Weston Rd The third AA Se at opened their doors was the Amor Y Paz Group It had its first meeting on the 16 of August 1967 At the moment the group is located at the intersection of Dupont St and Dovercourt Road The group Amistad was born on the 28 Of August 1988 at 440 Shaw St Cur
6. algun desconcierto e incertidumbre de algunos miembros y grupos pero a el final la mayoria de los grupos envio su aprobacion atravez de RSGs y fue como de esa manera el dia Lunes 2 de Octubre de 1995 se hizo lla eleccion de el miembro de el comite de Distrito MCD utilizando el metodo que indicaba el manual de servicio de la cual salio electo el companero Guillermo Rajo tambien se eligio el MCD Alterno quedando electo el companero Carlos Chamale sin embargo porque las reuniones de area son en Ingles se decidio que el companero Carlos Chamale como MCD y Guillermo Rajo Como alterno de el Y fue aprobado por unanimidad En la siguiente reunion Lunes 9 de Octubre se eligio a el companero Pedro Montejo como secretario y Juan Pnce como tesorero En ese mismo mes de Octubre fuimos invitados a la asmblea de area en Kingston donde se reunieron con el delegado cordinador y secretario y tesorero donde se presento la solicitud de registracion de el distrito de habla Hispana y asi tubimos por primera vez la experiencia de de estar en una conferencia de area de AA se nos dijo que la registracion seguiria el mismo procedimiento que han seguido totos los distrito y que posiblemente el la asamblea de primavera de 1996 logremos nuestra afiliacion In 1948 the Pembroke Group was founded by Whit C and Stan G Whit s dry date was Aug 1 1947 The meetings were held in the Cathedral School and the first member to join was Peter R In those early days there were
7. e la necesidad que tenian de hablar de su recuperacion se dieron cuenta que era necesario formar un grupo y consiguieron un local en la Iglesia san Juan Bautista ubicada en la interseccion de las calles Grace y Dundas donde el dfia Sabado 21 de Abril de 1984 se celebro la primera reunion a la cual asistieron 6 companeros que venian com programa de sus respectivos paises y en tal reunion acordaron que el grupo llevaria por nombre Nueva Esperanza por problemas ajenos a ellos se tuvo que dejar el lugar y por un poco de tiempo se reunieron en la casa de el companero Pastor F y en ese lugar se celebro el aniversario de un companero Julio C R mas adelante se consiguio otro local en la iglesia de San Peter Ubicada en Bathurst y Bloor donde sesionaban los dias Miercoles en el horario de 8 00 pm A 10 00 pm el grupo comenzo a crecer y un centro de servicio Social que estaba ubicado en la misma iglesia sirvio de gran ayuda pues alli se informa a el publico de la existencia de alcoholicos anonimos en espanol Debido a la necesidad de mas dias de reuniones se consiguio otro local en el Canadian Native Centre ubicado en Espadina y Collegue donde se le dio a el grupo la oportunidad a el grupo de reunirce los Sabados algunas veces a las 2 00 pm otras veces a las 3 00 pm y algunas veces no habian reuniones porque utilisaban el local para otras actividades A pesar de los problemas de local y horarios el grupo continua funcionando y es asi como se i
8. el 1830 de Finch Ave West El siguiente grupo que se fundo de habla Hispana fue el grupo Viviendo Sobrio en el 320 de Lakeshore Blvd west a el momento se reunen en el 1479 de Wilson Ave West El d a 23 de Octubre de 1988 companeros delegados de los cuatro grupos de habla Hispana existents en la ciudad de Toronto se reunieron en el local de el grupo Amor y Paz con el odjetivo de la formacion de una Oficina Intergrupal de Habla Hispana en la ciudad de Toronto la razon la nesecidad de difundir el mensaje de Alcoholicos Anonimos a la comjunidad hispana en la ciudad de Toronto y al mismo tiempo entablar un Puente de comunicacion entre los grupos de habla Hispana en la ciudad de Toronto y sus alrededores se le paso a dar lectura a parte de el manual de servicio donde explica como esta estructurada una oficina Intergrupal y se paso a formar una Junta de servicio y de esta manera el dia 23 de Octubre de 1988 que oficialmente fundada la oficina Intergrupal de habla Hispana RESENA HISTORICA DE EL DISTRITO DE HABLA HISPANA DE TORONTO en el mes de enero de el ano 1995 un grupo de AA de habla Hispana enviaba una idea a la oficina Intergrupal de Habla Hispana de AA en Toronto donde se planteaba la inquietud de ver las posibilidad de reunir a los representates de Servicios Generales RSGs de los diferentes grupos de habla hispana de Toronto esto se aria con el fin de que los RSGs trataran de enterarse un poco mas sobre el manual de servicios conoc
9. er a mayor profundidad las responsabilidades de su servicio como tales y ver la posibilidad de que en el futuro se formara un distrito de habla Hispana en Toronto Fue asi como en el mes de Marzo de ese mismo ano se enviara una carta de convocatoria a los RSGs de todo los grupos de habla Hispana de Toronto en total ocho grupos par tener su primerra reunion el dia 8 de Marzo a la cual asistieron la mayoria de los representantes de todos los grupos Despues de discutir profundamente el tema se concluyo que si era necesario que los RSGs se reunieran periodicamente para estudiar el manual de servicios y se acordo que las reuniones se arian cada semana para estudiar el manual de servicio en esa reunion se formo provicionalmente un cordinador secretario y tesorero En las primeras reuniones de studio asistian representantes de los grupos unidad renacimiento una Luz en Toronto asmistad sendero de Vida Nuevo Amanecer y despues se sumarian los grupos Nueva Esperanza y Amor y Paz Se acordo pasar una septima en esas reuniones para cubrir los gastos y darle el 50 de lo colectado a la oficina Intergrupal que era el lugar donde se hacian las reuniones de studio Las reuniones de studio continuaron su curso y despues de algun tiempo de profundisar y conocer mas las atribuciones del RSG y entender un poco mas el manual de servicio se empeso a perfilar la idea de investigar sobre cuale eran los procedimientos para formar un distrito Asi que de
10. esa manera se procedio a enviar una carta a la oficina de Servicios generales de Nueva York solicitando informacion sobre la pocibilidad de formar un Distrito de Habla Hispana en Toronto La respuesta de ellos fue que si podiamos pero que consultaramos con el delegado de nuestra area y buscaramos apadrinamiento El siguiente paso fue invitar a el delegado de el area 83 companero Ray Mitchel quien se hizo presente a una reunion con los RSGs el dia 26 de Junio de 1995 en el local de la Oficina Intergrupal y el nos recomendaba seguir estudiando el manual de servicios En el mes de septiembre de el mismo ano tuvimos la visita de el Miembro de el Comite de Distrito de Habla Hispana de Montreal comp Jorge Lima con el cual tuvimos una reunion en el grupo Unidad El Volume 8 No 1 June 2011 Page 4 Area 83 Archives Newsletter Historia de la Oficina intergrupal de habla Hispana de la ciudad de Toronto Pembroke AA History companero nos compartio su experencia en el SDistrito y nos motivo a formar el nuestro De tal manera que llegamos a la conclucion de que si podiamos formar un distrito de habla Hispana no por el area de distribucion de los grupos sino por el aspecto de el idioma como lo enmarcaba el manual de servicio entonces se acordo que cada RSG motivara a su grupo y que seguidamente se pidiera a la conciencia de grupo sup unto de vista y aprobacion sobre la formacion de un distrito de habla hispana Logicamente esto causo
11. ncia la primera persona en el grupo Nueva Esperanza siendo el companero Jose I quien a la fecha permanece militando en nuestra comunidad En sus primeros anos fue de gran ayuda el compartimiento de los miembros de los grupos de habla Hispana de Montreal y sugieren que se rente un local especifico par alas reuniones la sugerencia es tomada en cuenta y es asi comi el grupo renta un local en el 528 de Collegue St y se empiesa asecionar todos los dias de la semana de 8 00 pm a 10 00 pm y este es el primer grupo de habla Hispana y a sido de mucha ayuda para la formacion denuevos grupos El Segundo grupo de habla Hispana Grupo UNIDAD nacio el 14 de Abril de 1986 en la Iglesia Guadalupe situada en Rogers y old Weston rd actualmente el grupo esta localizado en el 1049 de Weston Rd El tercer grupo de habla Hispana es el Grupo AMOR Y PAZ y nacio el 16 de Agosto en el 1577 de Bloor al momento el grupo esta localizado en el 1070 de Dovercourt rd El siguiente grupo de habla hispana es el grupo AMISTAD que nacio el 28 de Agosto de 1988 en el 440 de Shaw St a el Volume 8 No 4 March 2012 Page 3 Area 83 Archives Newsletter Historia de la Oficina intergrupal de habla Hispana de la ciudad de Toronto momento el grupo esta localizado en el 1560 de Dupont St y se tiene sus reuniones todos los dias de 8 00 pm a 10 00 pm El siguiente grupo de habla hispana Grupo Sendero de Vida nacio el 29 de Mayo de 1989 y el grupo esta cituado actualmente en
