7. een the object and its func tion takes on a whole new dimension in the work Central Heating Furniture Halfway between installation and in situ intervention this work reinterprets the elements present in the exhi bition space not only visually but also in sen sory way For this piece A Kassen used Marcel Breuer style furniture similar to what one can find in an art school Although placed in diffe rent rooms the table and the stack of chairs are interconnected by pipes leading to the radiator of the gallery which is connected to the heating system of the City of Gennevilliers Hot water passing through the metal tubes the furniture is made from gives a feeling of warmth ema nating from these objects They then become the receptacle of energy coming from outside highlighting the exhibition space as the inter face between the outside world and the viewer This heating effect is balanced by the work Ven tilation Slide Projection Dozens of small squares of glass were taken from the gallery s window allowing the cold autumn air to come into the ex hibition space Usually masked a white opaque film the window recovers part of its function by letting people see the rear courtyard These cut pieces of glass are then reused as slides for the projector on the table in the first room Since they are blank images this projection lets you see traces and accumulated dust on the outer surface of the windows By this process in which the

13. ts not without derision a subtle play between the work of art docu mentation and in situ intervention For their Exposition personnelle at the Edouard Manet Gallery A Kassen questions the modes of dis seminating objects by deconstructing the codes of artistic creation and their rules for distribu tion in the heart of contemporary art networks In this regard Mirror a project still under way is Significant to their work These large format photographs were made from images of old mirrors taken from the catalogs of famous auc tion houses Once selected by the artists the images were printed using the original dimen sions of the mirrors letting numerous elements Show paper imperfections pixilation of the image and bits of text on the reverse side of the page After their exhibition these images will be sold at the same type of houses as those in the catalogs from which they are derived Going from the status of a document to that of a work of art they will in turn be photographed and published in a catalog and then will even tually be sold A Kassen thus operates on the principle of relative self similarity that is to say the reproduced image retains its original shape regardless of the scale we see it on However it differs on the one hand by being materiality altered by the reproduction process and on the other hand by its function of being recirculated as a contemporary photographic work of art This gap created betw
