7. and granted by the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property to Numa Robert Waelti a watchmaker in La Chaux de Fonds G rald and Pierre Dubois then began retracing the history of this watchmaker They consulted various antique watch specialists as well as the curator of the Watchmaking Museum in La Chaux de Fonds Nobody knew anything of Numa Robert Waelti At the end of the summer of 2008 Pierre Dubois decided to breathe new life into these movements They were therefore painstakingly dismantled part by part by Dubois D praz a company entrusted with decorating these magnificent historical movements It was not until then that the precious token of origin finally appeared Engraved 13 beneath the barrel bridge and totally invisible on the assembled movement was the LeCoultre amp Co maker s mark The paternity of the movements right the way through to their modification by Numa Robert Waelti was thus established and the prestigious manufacturer in Le Sentier duly confirmed this fact adding in its letter addressed to PIERRE DEROCHE that this discovery added another small stone to the vast edifice of the Jaeger LeCoultre heritage The history of these movements probably runs as follows e LeCoultre produced the movements in the late 19th century and delivered them to tablisseurs watch manufacturers who assem bled the various parts of a watch e While these tablisseurs were generally well known brands this

11. d reset A quarter repeater watch is a striking watch which when the repe ater slide is activated sounds the elapsed hours and quarters The hours are indicated by a low pitched note and the quarter hours by double high and low pitched notes Description of the PDR 4013 movement Mechanical hand wound movement with Maltese Cross barrel spring stopwork In addition to indicating the hours minutes and seconds the movement drives two other functions namely a column wheel chronograph and a quarter repeater On this late 19th century movement with no minute counter the chronograph accurately counts off only the first 60 seconds of the measured time The time is displayed exclusively by the central chronograph seconds hand The quarter repeater is equipped with a slow or fast striking regulator The large hour hammer first strikes the low pitched har dened steel gong to indicate the elapsed hours Then the smaller quarter hammer and the hour hammer alternately strike the high pitched and low pitched gongs to indicate the quarter hours The meticulously decorated movement features a circular grai ned mainplate bridges adorned with C tes de Gen ve a sun burst barrel chamfered and circular satin brushed wheels The hour and minute hands are openworked along with the lower balance bridge thus revealing the seconds wheel The regulating organ is a Breguet type overcoil balance spring and a balance with

15. oy composed of 75 pure gold around 20 copper and around 5 silver The folding clasp is composed of a cover in 750 18 carat rose gold and a fold out piece in grade 2 titanium The PIERRE DEROCHE BeCanto watch The surprising match between 19 and 21 centuries In 2007 Pierre Dubois Managing Director of PIERRE DEROCHE while hunting through the treasures harboured by an antique dealer friend of his discovered some 19th century pocket watch movement blanks with hour amp quarter repeater and chronograph functions Since these movements were believed to have originated in the Vall e de Joux a cradle of high end watchmaking and of PIERRE DeRocue itself Pier re Dubois bought them up as their existing state His father G rald Dubois a brilliant retired watchmaker still passio nately dedicated to his art set about examining them in order to find their exact origin Despite striking similarities appeared to point to one of the famous manufacturers in the Vall e de Joux there was still some doubt in the absence of a maker s mark formally confirming their provenance Moreover it seemed that the movements had undergone a subsequent modification after their initial production G rald Dubois then took an interest in the 8172 patent number engra ved on the mainplate His research led to a decisive breakthrough when he consulted the Swiss federal registers which show a patent for a New watch with pendant winding dated May 5th 1894

17. screws This set of components was not part of the original movement 10 Making the dial The dial making process is a concentrated blend of high tech operations Once it has been cut out and drilled for the hands to pass through the circular plate of synthetic sapphire is partially sandblasted gt Technical information sapphire is in fact crystallised aluminium oxide Its hardness is second only to that of diamonds which is why diamond tools are required to machine it Sandblasting is an operation involving compressed air projection of extre mely hard particles used to create a matt appearance on a given surface in this case the sapphire plate On the movement side the sapphire plate is chrome plated using PVD technology asecond PVD metallization is then perfor med to create the tinted areas On the hand side of the dial the black zones are also created by metallization gt Technical information PVD plating involves physical rather than chemi cal vacuum deposition of metal particles The metal is thus deposited on the sapphire plate The particles thus applied are chrome or titanium for the tinted zones Black metallization is achieved by a coating of titanium based particles of a different composition The indications appearing on the dial letters non voluminous numerals and hour markers are then laser engraved and coloured white or red gt Technical information Laser engraving consists of a
