30. 23 SS 68 iskwshin gmail com 700Z0091 User Interface of Electronic Dictionaries A Survey on the Screen Design of Data Retrieval Shin 1chiro Ishikawa Kobe University Summary Handheld electronic dictionaries E dictionaries hereafter have become more and more common these days When they came into the market for the first hme most of the users were professionals of English language such as teachers translators interpreters or people engaged in the international business They are familiar with Various dictonaries and how to use them effectively However recent expansion of e dictionary market results in unexpected increase of users at beginner levels such as collese students high school students or even junlor high school students Therefore e dictionaries are now required to meet educational needs and to sophisticate their user interface UI so that young users who hardly care manuals might be able to use them rather intuitively In this paper we will compare the data retrieval screen design of recent models of e dictionaries Our comparative survey leads us to conclude that the UI of current models when reviewed from an educational viewpoint still leaves some room
