104. b 173 2010 5 15 Communicating Appreciation An Analysis of Expressions of Gratitude in Ireland the U S and Japan Kate Elwood The forms that expressions of gratitude take may vary from culture to culture even within varieties of inner circle English although at present there has not been much research regarding inter varietal differences The presentation focused on expressions of gratitude in Ireland the U S and Japan based on data obtained through discourse completion tests covering three situations related to 1 a small act of consideration 2 condolence and 3 practical assistance Responses were categorized according to the three main categories positive comment emotion and effect and differences in both types of strategy and forms employed were observed among the three groups The greatest differences were between the Japanese responses and the English responses However there were additionally significant differences between the responses of the American English speakers and those of the Irish English speakers The presentation also included an overview of pertinent resea
