9. am so one gram of granules is equal to five grams of crude herbs Most of the mineral substances such as Mu Li oyster shell and Long Gu dragon bone are not concentrated and thus larger doses can be used relative to the rest of the herbs Although some would suggest that granular herbs are a less effective dosing method than decoctions it should be remembered that extract granules contain the entire plant not just a liquid boiled extraction from the plant as is the case in traditional decoction The plant body is crushed and macerated into a powder which is then used as a carrier for the concentrated extract from the plant When you drink granular herbs you are in fact ingesting the entire substance as well as the concentrated extract Thus many herbalists consider granulars a more efficient means of dosing than traditional decoction Therefore when converting a decoction daily dosage it is not accurate to simply divide by 5 ie 100 g of crude herbs requires 20 g of granules Since the dosing of granules is considerably more efficient the amount required is proportionally less in this case 12 15 g of granules will do the duty of the 20 g crude herbs dose Daily Dosage When you refer to a source text such as Bensky s Formulas and Strategies and see dosages for crude herbs you may think you have to start dividing all those numbers by 5 to figure out the dosage for granular herbs Not so It is not necessary to work backwards i
