Open Demo Song item in the File menu If you disconnect your Ignition Key hardware on an unauthorized computer or lose the Internet Connection while running Reason Essentials with Internet Verification the program will automatically enter Demo Mode You can continue to work and save your songs as usual When you reconnect the Ignition Key hardware or reconnect to the internet Reason Essentials will automatically revert to authorized mode and the Demo Mode indicator will go off AQ INSTALLATION Reason ESSENTIALS INSTALLATION BON Reason ESSENTIALS Chapter 3 Setting Up About this Chapter This chapter describes the settings you need to make before you can start using Reason Essentials These are necessary in order to get any sounds to and from the program and to be able to play and control Reason Essentials via MIDI First run Reason Essentials Setup Wizard f you followed the instructions correctly in the last chapter Reason Essentials should be running and the irst dialog in the Reason Essentials Setup Wizard guide should be open This only appears the very first time the program is run Reason Essentials Setup Wizard ae Language English a Deutsch German Frangais French AAS Japanese m If you change the language setting the change will take effect on the next page of the Setup Wizard Note that the Language page only appears in the Windows version of

When you receive the Reason Essentials box you should NOT reinstall the Reason Essen tials program everything you need has already been installed from the download ver sion ET INTRODUCTION Reason ESSENTIALS INTRODUCTION BON Reason ESSENTIALS Chapter 2 Installation Requirements Below you will find the minimum requirements for running Reason Essentials Note that these are the minimum requirements You will benefit from a fast computer with lots of RAM since this will allow you to use more devices at the same time Mac OS X e Intel Mac with dual cores or better e 4GB RAM or more DVD drive e 3 GB free hard disk space program may use up to 20 GB scratch disk space e Mac OS X 10 7 or later e Monitor with at least 1280x768 resolution e CoreAudio compliant audio interface such as Propellerhead Balance or built in audio hardware e A free USB2 0 port is necessary when using the Propellerhead Balance audio interface e Internet connection for registration and Rack Extension installation e MIDI interface and a MIDI keyboard recommended Windows Intel Pentium 4 AMD Opteron with dual cores or better e 4GB RAM or more e DVD drive e 3 GB free hard disk space program may use up to 20 GB scratch disk space Windows 7 64 bit or later e Monitor with at least 1280x768 resolution e Audio Interface with ASIO driver such as Propellerhead Balance e A free USB2 0 port is necessary when
3. e MIDI Control Keyboard Select this if you have a MIDI keyboard with programmable knobs buttons or faders You need to set up your MIDI control keyboard so that the controllers send the correct MIDI CC messages depending on which Reason Essentials device you want to control check out the MIDI Implementation Chart in the Reason Essentials documentation If your control surface has templates or presets for different Reason Essentials devices these can be used e MIDI Control Surface Select this if you have a MIDI controller with programmable knobs buttons or faders but without key board Again you need to set your controllers to send the correct MIDI CCs MIDI Keyboard No Controls Select this if you have a MIDI keyboard without programmable knobs buttons or faders This is used for playing only including performance controllers such as pitch bend mod wheel etc you cannot adjust Reason Essentials device parameters with this type of control surface e MIDI Multichannel Control Keyboard Surface These options can be used if your MIDI keyboard or surface can handle multiple MIDI channels simul taneously After selecting a model proceed with selecting MIDI input as described above About the Master Keyboard One of the control surfaces can be the Master Keyboard This is like any other control surface but it must have a keyboard and it cannot be locked to a specific Reason Essentials device in other words it always fo

You can then save your Song with a new name Opening the last Song at program launch It s possible to instruct Reason Essentials to automatically open the last Song each time you launch Reason Essentials You select this on the General tab in the Preferences dialog 1 Select Preferences from the Edit menu Win or Reason Essentials menu Mac and then click the General tab Default song D Empty Template PlaceholderTemplate reedemo hoaa last song on startup 2 Tick the Load Last Song On Startup checkbox When you launch Reason Essentials the next time the last saved Song will automatically open in a document window SETTING UP AAN Reason ESSENTIALS Reassigning the Function Keys in Mac OS X When you work with Reason Essentials you will do a lot of navigating between the three main areas the main mixer the rack and the sequencer The quickest way to switch between these areas is to use the function keys F5 F6 and F7 see Navigating between the areas in the Common Operations and Concepts chapter in the Operation Manual and Help system for details Also the F3 F4 and F8 keys are shortcuts for showing and hiding the Browser On screen Piano Keys window and the Tool Window respectively However on many Macintosh models especially MacBooks the function keys double as hardware control buttons For example they might control the volume of the built in speaker the display brightness or keyboard
5. download time and file size Proceed as follows to install the Reason Essentials 8 2 without soundbank version 1 2 gt Download Reason Essentials 8 2 without soundbank Unzip the download file Windows or mount the disk image file Mac OS X On Windows double click the Install Reason Essentials 8 exe file and follow the instruc tions on screen On Mac OS X drag the Reason Essentials 8 folder to the Applications folder Drag the Factory Sound Bank ReFill from the old Reason Essentials program folder and drop in the new Reason Essentials 8 folder Also make sure there are no other ReFills left in the old Reason Essentials folder On Mac delete the old Reason Essentials folder On Windows uninstall the old Reason Essentials version Launch Reason Essentials 8 2 Reason Essentials asks to download some additional content ID8 dat When done Reason Essentials automatically moves the Factory Sound Bank to a separate sub folder in the following locations on the hard disk Windows C ProgramData Propellerhead Software Soundbanks Mac OS X Library Application Support Propellerhead Software Soundbanks The factory sound bank will be located here so that Reason Essentials can be automatically updated in the future without affecting deleting the existing factory sound bank If Reason Essentials shouldn t find the factory sound bank at this location it will be automatically download
6. isn t on this list select Other You will also have to specify a MIDI port to use This can be done either by selecting one of the available ports listed in the popup or by clicking the Find button and pressing some keys on your keyboard Note that if you have additional remote control surface devices in your setup these will have to be added in the Preferences see Adding a Control surface on page 30 The Setup Wizard will only establish a connected Master Keyboard device Setup is now complete If all went well you should now have established audio and MIDI communication the basics needed to record and play back audio and to direct MIDI to Reason Essentials However if for any reason the Setup Wizard failed to establish the necessary settings or if you wish to add other devices etc you will have to make your settings in the Preferences dialog see below Select which song to open and if you want to watch the Getting Started Tutorials on the Propellerhead web site The final page of the Setup Wizard let s you select if you want to open a Demo Song a template document or an empty song directly after finishing the Setup Wizard It also gives you an option to watch Getting Started video tutorials on the Propellerhead web site BON SETTING UP Reason ESSENTIALS About the Preferences The basic settings for audio and MIDI are done in the Preferences dialog This is opened from the Edit menu or if yo
7. turn off a surface by deactivating its Use with Reason Essentials checkbox This could be useful if the surface is connected to your system but you only want to use it with another program etc There is also a Sync page in the Preferences This is only used for External Control MIDI buses and for MIDI Clock Sync input All hands on MIDI control is set up on the Control surfaces page db SETTING UP Reason ESSENTIALS Setting up the Default Song It s possible to select a default Song which will automatically open as a template each time you select New from the File menu The Default Song could be any Song you have created earlier or a factory made Template Song You can select this Default Song on the General tab in Preferences 1 Select Preferences from the Edit menu Win or Reason Essentials menu Mac and then click the General tab Default song Empty emplate PlaceholderTemplate reedemo 2 Click the Template radio button in the Default Song section 3 Click the folder icon to the right and select the Song you want to use as template when creating new Songs Each time you create a new Song by selecting New from the File menu the selected Song will be loaded and used as a template for your new Song On Windows platforms the Song document will be named Document n where n is an incremental number On Mac OS X platforms the document will be named untitled n where n is an incremental number
8. using the Propellerhead Balance audio interface e Internet connection for registration and Rack Extension installation e MIDI interface and a MIDI keyboard recommended INSTALLATION BON Reason ESSENTIALS About the Audio Hardware The audio hardware is the computer equipment that converts the analog signals from instruments and microphones to digital signals that Reason Essentials can work with and store and back again for connection to an amplifier headphones or similar This equipment could be a built in audio card a 2 channel USB interface such as Propellerhead Balance or a Firewire audio interface or an audio card with several inputs and outputs digital connectors etc Regardless of which you need to make sure the hardware and its drivers are properly installed Audio hardware and Mac OS X If you are using the Propellerhead Balance audio interface Please refer to the Propellerhead Balance Operation Manual pdf for information on how to install connect and use the Propellerhead Balance audio interface Always check the Propellerhead web site for the latest Balance drivers before installing and connecting Balance If you are using the built in audio hardware in your Macintosh All Mac models come with a built in audio interface providing stereo input and output jacks and in some cases a built in microphone Depending on your needs the quality of these inputs and outputs may be fully sufficient for use with Reaso
9. work as usual and even save your work You cannot however open songs in Demo Mode for details see Running Reason Essentials in Demo Mode on page 21 Registering Reason Essentials To be able to run Reason Essentials in authorized mode see Running Reason Essentials with Internet Verification on page 18 and Running Reason Essentials on an authorized computer or with an authorized Ignition Key hardware on page 20 the program must be registered to your account on the Propellerhead web site Ifyou purchased the boxed version of Reason Essentials follow the instructions printed on the DVD sleeve If you purchased Reason Essentials directly from the Propellerhead web shop the Rea son Essentials license has already been registered to your user account and you can use Reason Essentials by running with Internet Verification Running Reason Essentials with Internet Verification If you launch Reason Essentials on an unauthorized computer or without an authorized Ignition Key hardware connected the following window appears Note that this requires a working Internet connection and that your Reason Essentials license has been registered to your user account as described in Registering Reason Es sentials on page 18 a Welcome to Reason Essentials User name Password Demo Mode Remember my password More Options Enter the User name and Password for your Propellerhead accoun

MIDI interface and a MIDI keyboard When installing the MIDI interface and its drivers follow the instructions in its documen tation carefully e While a MIDI interface with a single input is sufficient you will benefit from having two or more individual inputs This is especially true if you want to manipulate Reason Essentials parameters with additional MIDI control surface devices or use the program in conjunction with an external stand alone sequencer drum machine or similar e For some MIDI interfaces connected via USB no driver installation is required Just plug in the interface and you re ready to go For other more advanced MIDI interfaces or at least to take advantage of more ad vanced features like multiple inputs you will need to install a driver Please consult the documentation that came with the interface for details MIDI Connections Simply connect the USB cable from your keyboard to your computer Or Connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI Out on your MIDI keyboard or other MIDI controller to a MIDI In on your MIDI interface This is sufficient to be able to play and record notes and controllers in Reason Essentials from the MIDI keyboard INSTALLATION BON Reason ESSENTIALS If you are not using a USB keyboard you may also connect the MIDI Out from the MIDI in terface to the MIDI In on your MIDI keyboard This is not strictly necessary to use Reason Essentials but it will enable two way com

NTIALS Chapter 1 Introduction Welcome Thank you for choosing Reason Essentials As a streamlined version of Reason Reason Essentials comes complete with audio recording and editing great sounding and versatile effects and instruments devices as well as all the mixing tools you need to sound great n Reason Essentials Version 8 we have focused on speed and workflow enhancements so you can work even faster than before The new browser is always there with access to your full library of songs sounds samples and instruments all the time Drag and drop is now available throughout the Reason Essentials program Create instruments by dragging a synth patch to the sequencer drag samples directly to Redrum channels or create effects by dragging effect patches to the rack for example Reason Essentials Version 8 also comes with brand new amp and speaker models from Softube Reason Essentials Version 8 1 eatures the new Drop to Propellerhead function which allows you to upload and share your music on your Propellerhead account Reason Essentials Version 8 2 comes with the new automatic update feature which enables automatic program updates via Internet We have also added more track and clip colors to improve the visual overview The new revert function allows you to easily get back to the original patch when you are browsing for new ones Also don t forget to visit the Propellerhead web site at www propellerheads se an

Reason Essentials In Mac OS X the selected system language is used Note that any setting you make in the Setup Wizard can be changed later on in the Pref erences dialog SETTING UP BON Reason ESSENTIALS Clicking Next will take you through a series of dialogs where the following happens The Setup Wizard will first try to find a compatible audio driver It will automatically select the first compatible driver it finds If this is the driver you wish to use fine If it isn t select your preferred driver from the Audio Card Driver pop up If you don t know which driver to use see Setting up the Audio Hardware on page 27 Next Reason Essentials will try to auto detect a Master Keyboard If one is found and you want to use this click Use and proceed For Reason Essentials to auto detect a device you need two way MIDI communication Non USB keyboard devices without a MIDI input can of course still be added manually Note that your keyboard model might not be auto detected by Reason Essentials even though it s a modern one and connects via USB However you can still use such a key board to control Reason Essentials in the same way as with an auto detected keyboard If Reason Essentials can t find the keyboard you have connected or if you clicked Don t Use you will be asked to specify a Master Keyboard manually This is done by first selecting a manufacturer and then a model If your model keyboard

14. a program shortcut alias on your desktop When the installation is complete you have the option of launching Reason Essentials directly The installer will place the included Factory Sound Bank and ID8 dat files in the Ci ProgramData Propellerhead Software Soundbanks folder Mac OS X On the Mac there is only a folder called Reason Essentials 8 simply drag this to the Applications folder The Factory Sound Bank and ID8 dat files are initially in the Reason Essentials 8 folder but the first time you run Reason Essentials they will be automatically moved to the Library Application Support Propellerhead Software Soundbanks folder Both platforms e During the installation on Windows or during the first program launch on Mac OS X the Authorizer application will be installed on your computer This application is necessary for handling the Reason Essentials authorization see below and admin istration of Rack Extension devices About the Sound Bank on Mac OS X DVD version only Before you launch Reason Essentials for the first time under Mac OS X make sure the Reason Essentials DVD is inserted This will allow the program to copy the Factory Sound Bank to your hard disk INSTALLATION BON Reason ESSENTIALS Updating from Reason Essentials Version 2 0 or later If you are updating from Reason Essentials Version 2 0 or later you can download the Reason Essentials 8 2 without soundbank version to minimize the
15. backlight To make these keys actually work as function keys for software such as Reason Essentials you need to hold the Fn key while pressing them This can work perfectly OK but to get the best workflow in Reason Essentials we recommend that you change this behavior so that pressing e g the F5 key actually sends F5 to Reason Essentials and you hold down the Fn key to get the hardware control functions instead Here is how you change this 1 Open the System Preferences in Mac OS X and select the Keyboard item The Keyboard preferences are shown 2 Select the Keyboard tab and make sure the checkbox Use all F1 F2 etc keys as stan dard function keys is ticked low you can use F3 F8 for controlling functions in Reason Essentials To use hardware control fea ures such as volume and display brightness you need to hold down the Fn key before pressing the unction keys 600 Keyboard Show All a lee Keyboard Shortcuts Key Repeat Delay Until Repeat ee ON Off Slow i Fast Long Short se all F1 F2 etc keys as standard function keys When this option is selected press the Fn key to use the special features printed on each key M Adjust keyboard brightness in low light Turn off when computer is not used for Some function keys might also be pre assigned to Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts which will have priority over software such as Reason Essentials This is easily changed 3 Click th

18. e on the Audio tab in Preferences Depending on the audio hardware and the driver you may be able to adjust these values If you experience high latency values you will need to make adjustments to your configuration If available use the Buffer Size slider to lower the latency The lowest buffer size setting you can choose depends on the audio drivers and your computer s per formance If you get crackles and glitches during playback the buffer size is set too low for your sys tem you need to raise the buffer size until you can play back normally Ifthe Buffer Size slider is disabled you may be able to lower the buffer size in the control panel for the audio hardware click the Control Panel button to open this For more information please consult the Reason Essentials Operation Manual pdf SETTING UP IS Reason ESSENTIALS Setting up MIDI Control Surfaces In Reason Essentials MIDI keyboards or remote control devices are called control surfaces MIDI input from control surfaces is handled by a system called Remote Here are some of the main features e You can use any number of control surfaces at the same time The program supports a large number of control surfaces out of the box knobs faders and buttons on the surfaces are automatically mapped to the most useful parameters on the Reason Essentials devices You don t have to change the settings on the control surface to control different devices in Reason Es sentia
19. ed from the Propellerhead web site and put there The Authorization system Reason Essentials uses an authorization system designed to be as flexible as possible while at the same time providing the best possible copy protection for the product Here s how it works The core of the authorization system is your license number which is registered to your user account on the Propellerhead web site If you have a working Internet connection you can run Reason Essentials with Internet Verification The program will then contact the Propellerhead web site and verify that Reason Essentials is regis tered to your user account If you need to use Reason Essentials without Internet access you can download and in stall the Codemeter application and then authorize your computer or Ignition Key hard ware from your Propellerhead user page During start up Reason Essentials automatically detects that your computer is authorized You can also choose to authorize an optional physical Ignition Key USB stick or Propellerhead Bal ance audio interface to run Reason Essentials in authorized mode anywhere and on any computer BON INSTALLATION Reason ESSENTIALS 17 Finally if you don t have an authorized computer or Ignition Key hardware at hand nor a working Internet connection you can run Reason Essentials in Demo Mode This is also the mode you use if you are trying out the program but haven t yet purchased it In this mode you can
20. efore starting your computer and launching Reason Essentials This way Reason Essentials will start up immediately without the Authorization procedure If you have an authorized computer or an authorized Ignition Key hardware connected to your computer its no longer necessary to have Internet connection when running Reason Essentials INSTALLATION BON Reason ESSENTIALS Running Reason Essentials in Demo Mode If you don t have a Reason Essentials license or if you don t have an authorized computer or your optional Ignition Key hardware at hand and don t have a working Internet connection you can run Reason Essentials in Demo Mode 1 Launch Reason Essentials The following window will show up a Welcome to Reason Essentials User name Password Demo Mode Remember my password in Demo More Options 2 Click on the Demo Mode button Reason Essentials launches in Demo Mode The Demo Mode indicator lights up to the right on the Sequencer Transport Panel Running Reason Essentials in demo mode allows you to perform all operations as in authorized mode with three exceptions e You cannot export audio drop files to Propellerhead or bounce mixer channels to disk e You will not have access to any Rack Extension devices e You cannot open songs The only songs that can be opened in demo mode are the dedicated demo songs file extension reedemo These demo songs can be accessed from the
21. er Ignition Key You can have one computer and one Ignition Key authorized at a time If you re moving your work from an authorized computer to another computer you should first deauthrorize the current computer and then authorize the other one This is done from your account page at the Propellerhead web site 1 Log in on your currently authorized computer and go to your own Products page under the user menu 2 Click the Authorize button On the page that is shown there should be a Deauthorize button next to the computer icon 3 Click the Deauthorize button next to the computer icon to remove the authorization from your computer BON INSTALLATION Reason ESSENTIALS If you are using an authorized Ignition Key or Propellerhead Balance audio interface instead of an authorized computer you can just move the Ignition Key Propellerhead Balance from your old computer to your new one Remember to deauthorize your computer before updating the Operating System or be fore sending your computer to service or selling it Running Reason Essentials on an authorized computer or with an authorized Ignition Key hardware If you launch Reason Essentials on an authorized computer or with an authorized Ignition Key hardware Propellerhead USB stick or Propellerhead Balance audio interface connected the program will simply start without further ado gt Ifyou are using an Ignition Key always connect the Ignition Key hardware b
22. er your Reason Essentials license to your Propellerhead user account Once you have registered Reason Essentials to your account and you don t need the registration code any more Note that if you bought Reason Essentials from the Propellerhead web shop it is already registered to your account The Reason Essentials download version The full download version of Reason Essentials contains the complete product contents In other words there is no need to purchase a boxed version When you have downloaded the program package and installed the program all you have to do is register and authorize the program and you are good to go Refer to Registering Reason Essentials on page 18 and Running Reason Essentials with Internet Verification on page 18 for registration and authorization details Using the Reason Essentials download version while waiting for the box If you have purchased the boxed version of Reason Essentials and are waiting for the shipment you could still use the download version of the program and run it with full functionality Refer to Registering Reason Essentials on page 18 Running Reason Essentials with Internet Verification on page 18 for details on how to proceed If this is your first acquaintance with audio recording and music production software you might also want to check out the About the Audio Hardware on page 13 and About MIDI Interfaces on page 14 sections before continuing
23. llows the MIDI input to the sequencer This is the surface you use to play the instrument devices in Reason Essentials e The first surface with a keyboard that is added or found by auto detect is automatically selected to be the Master Keyboard This is shown in the Attached Surfaces list on the Preferences page If you want to use another surface as Master Keyboard select it in the list and click the Make Master Keyboard button You can only have one Master Keyboard If you don t want to use any Master Keyboard at all select the current Master Keyboard surface and click the same button which is now labeled Use No Master Keyboard SETTING UP AQ Reason ESSENTIALS Master Keyboard Input This allows you to set a preference for how Master Keyboard Input mode is selected Standard mode This always sets Master Keyboard Input to the selected track Separated mode This will allow you to independently select tracks while Master Keyboard Input is unchanged When this is mode is active Master Keyboard Input is set by clicking the device icon in the track list Select ing another track by clicking on the track name or somewhere in the track list leaves Master Key board Input unchanged Other functions To edit a surface double click it in the list or select it and click Edit This lets you change its name and MIDI port settings if needed To delete a surface select it in the list and click Delete You can

29. ndows Ifyou run Reason Essentials under Windows it s required that the audio hardware sup ports ASIO drivers otherwise you won t be able to record any audio Select the option that corresponds to the ASIO hardware you want to use If you are using audio hardware for which there is a specific ASIO driver you should select this With an ASIO driver written specifically for the audio hardware Reason Essentials can communicate more or less directly with the audio hardware The benefits are lower latency see below and possibly better support for additional hardware features such as multiple inputs and outputs About Latency and other Audio Settings On the Audio tab you will find a number of additional settings for audio The most important ones are Buffer Size and the corresponding readouts for Input and Output Latency Sample rate 44100 z Buffer size H 128 samples Input latency 6 ms Output latency 5ms Recording latency compensation 0 ms The Input Latency is the delay between when the audio is sent from a connected microphone or instrument and when it s received and detected by Reason Essentials Output Latency is the delay between when audio is sent from Reason Essentials and when you actually hear it The latencies in an audio system depends on your audio hardware its drivers and their settings When you select a driver its latency values are automatically reported by the audio card and displayed in th
