A A 5 4 5 5 6 0 6 1 6 2 Pres If you do not have a pre amp output facility that is one that varies up and down as your main volume control rises and falls then you can only use the Left and Right High Level inputs which should be connected to your amplifier Left and Right speaker outputs respectively See Section 4 2 3 l Amplifier Connections All connections should be made with the subwoofer switched OFF Furthermore it is advisable that all other equipment should be switched off prior to making any changes This will reduce the possibilities of faults occurring during the setting up process All signals fed to the Model 40B should be adjustable from the source equipment such as the AV amplifier Under no circumstances should the Model 40B be connected to amplifier Record Output sockets as there is no control of volume from these outputs System Fine Tuning Once positioned within the room the controls on the Model 40B may only need to be adjusted infrequently Indeed the rear panel controls have been placed there to prevent continuous and confusing adjustment However in fine tuning your Model 40B subwoofer you may notice that small changes in the positions of the controls may make significant differences in the sound KEF advises you to alter one control at a time so that you can confirm the effect is as required FAULT DIAGNOSIS Trouble Shooting Guide In the first instance if the subwoofe

5. more bass there hasn t been a lot of choice certainly not as far as dedicated subwoofers for Home Theatre are concerned With sights firmly fixed on producing bass cleanly dynamically and effortlessly KEF have designed and produced a high quality subwoofer that will fully complement any Dolby Pro Logic surround sound system yet is equally at home if used as an add on to a conventional hi fi system where the subwoofer can be used to augment the bass output of small satellite loudspeakers Dolby is a registered trademark of Dolby Laboratories Licensing Limited 2 0 FEATURES The Model 40B is a medium sized one way two driver floorstanding subwoofer designed to operate in free space away from side and rear walls A high quality internal Amplifier drives the two 200 mm 8 bass drive units mounted in Twin Coupled Cavity configuration The Model 40B has been designed to be used from the outset with the best quality Dolby Pro Logic Home Theatre systems Bass frequencies are output to the room through a specially designed contoured letter box on the Front Panel Model 40B may also be used to enhance hi fi systems where the loudspeakers have been designed to produce little or no bass extension on their own Connection to the Amplifier is by way of either gold plated phono input sockets or by 4 mm binding posts These enable the 40B to be used with many different types of ancillary equipment Note that the Model 40B does NOT

9. at the local supply voltage is the same as that marked on the rear panel If it is not check with your supplier before proceeding It is recommended that under normal conditions the rear power switch should be switched OFF when the subwoofer is not being used For specific markets an appropriate power lead is supplied The mains fuse is dependant on the local mains supply voltage and should be a 20 mm cartridge type anti surge fuse For 220 240 V operation the fuse should be a T2 5 Amp type For 100 120 V operation the fuse should be a T5 Amp rating type 5 0 5 1 5 2 5 3 INSTALLATION Speaker Placement and Room Acoustics Whilst bass frequencies are generally regarded as being omni directional some listeners may notice the low frequency sounds coming from the subwoofer This effect may be due to many factors such as closeness to room boundaries room construction internal room volume distance between the main speakers and the subwoofer etc It should also be noted that no part of the subwoofer is designed to operate in a damp environment nor will it benefit from immersion in liquids Storage and operating temperatures in the range 5 C to 45 C are considered satisfactory Speaker Positioning There are no hard and fast rules that will dictate which is the best position in your particular room however whilst it is impractical to expect you to constantly move the subwoofer around the room to get the b
10. e the appliance is operated 2 Retain Instructions The Safety and Operating Instructions should be retained for future reference 3 Heed Warnings All warnings on the appliance and in the Operating Instructions should be adhered to 4 Follow Instructions All Operating and Use Instructions should be followed 5 Water and Moisture The appliance should NOT be used in or near water for example near a bathtub washbowl kitchen sink laundry tub in a wet basement or near a swimming pool and the like 6 Carts and Stands The appliance should be used only with a cart or stand that is recommended by the manufacturers Furthermore said cart or stand should be moved with care Quick stops excessive force and uneven surfaces may cause the appliance cart combination to overturn 7 Wall or Ceiling Mounting The appliance should be mounted to a wall or ceiling as recommended by the manufacturer 8 Ventilation The appliance should be situated so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation For example the appliance should not be situated on a bed sofa rug or similar surface that may block any ventilation openings or placed in a built in installation such as a bookcase or cabinet that may impede the flow of air through the ventilation openings 9 Heat The appliance should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators heat registers stoves or other appliances including amp
11. erated with faulty or unsuitable equipment IN NO EVENT SHALL THE WARRANTOR BE LIABLE FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES whether damages result from breach of express or implied warranties tort negligence or otherwise Some states do not allow exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state Servicing The Model 40B subwoofer consists of both passive loudspeaker drive units and a single active component known as an Amplifier Whilst the drive units are inherently reliable and rarely give trouble it is important to remember that should a fault occur in any part of the reproducing system the fault is likely to be heard via the loudspeakers Therefore when faults arise careful and analytical diagnosis will be required to locate the actual source of the problem Loudspeaker drive units cannot generate hiss or hum Spurious noises of this type generally originate in the electronic sections of the equipment or even in the programme source itself If you suspect that the Model 40B is faulty take time to first confirm that the fault occurs on different programme sources of your equipment A fault which is evident only when playing CD s but not for example when using a laser disc player is unlikely to originate with the Model 40B subwoofer Due to the way i
12. est sound some experimentation is still likely to be required As a start we would recommend the following Position the subwoofer in a direct line between and equidistant from each of the two main front channel speakers Take note that positioning the subwoofer in a corner or close to a wall will accentuate the low frequency output This may lead to the overall sound being too boomy If possible experiment with the position of the subwoofer within the room by playing different types of pre recorded material and taking note of which position offers the best sound balance with your chosen front channel speakers Fine adjustment of the Subwoofer output level may also be required to get the best integration of sound pressure levels Home Theatre Hi Fi System useage Surround sound products are now available that do not fit a specific category The surround sound processor in your Home Theatre system may be incorporated within a pre amplifier an integrated amplifier or a receiver tuner amplifier Alternatively you may have a separate dedicated processor Whichever component you have will have its input and output sockets clearly marked Please ensure that you take time to identify the position of each of these sockets as care taken now will ensure that the subwoofer is connected correctly and that it will work optimally There are some choices that you will need to make when deciding how to connect your Home Theatre system to the Model 40B sub

18. provide a filtered output to drive satellite speakers 2 1 Magnetic Shielding A design feature of the Model 40B is it s magnetically shielded drivers The magnets of both bass drive units are mounted within steel cans which contain flux cancelling magnets This arrangement reduces the external magnetic field around the loudspeaker significantly reducing the picture distortion that can be caused by conventional unshielded loudspeakers Some televisions may be more sensitive to the location of external magnetic fields despite this shielding If in doubt please consult your dealer 3 0 UNPACKING HANDLING AND AFTERCARE 3 1 Unpacking On the side of the shipping carton and on the rear panel of the subwoofer there is a description of the mains voltage that applies to the Model 40B you have purchased Ensure that this voltage is correct for your area If it is not contact the dealer from whom you purchased the Model 40B Under no circumstances should you connect the Model 40B to an inappropriate supply voltage 3 2 4 0 4 1 4 1 1 4 1 2 4 1 3 4 2 The Model 40B subwoofer is packed as one speaker per carton Unpack the speaker carefully and inspect for any visible sign of damage Your speaker left KEF in perfect condition If any damage is apparent notify your dealer immediately Retain the packaging in case a need arises for you to transport the subwoofer at a later date If space permits retain the original packaging
19. put level of subwoofer in relation to the satellite or AV speakers Clockwise rotation of the control will increase the output level of the subwoofer such that when the 0 mark on the knob is set to twelve o clock full output may be achieved Frequency control The variable Frequency Control changes the subwoofer upper cut off frequency Its effective range is from 50 Hz to 120 Hz at a rate of 24 dB per octave Clockwise rotation of the frequency control increases the cut off frequency and accordingly increases the range over which the subwoofer works Adjust this control for the smoothest integration of sound between the main speakers and the subwoofer Mains Indicator A single red led positioned between the two Front Panel controls is illuminated if the rear mains switch is ON REAR PANEL SOCKETS The rear panel of the Model 40B Amplifier incorporates the Input sockets Balanced and Unbalanced Direct output sockets and the AC Power Input You should connect your amplifier to either the Input phono sockets or to the High Level Input terminals 4 2 1 Input sockets Low level O One pair of phono sockets is provided for the low level Left channel input coloured White and Right channel input coloured Red to the subwoofer If your amplifier has an external processor OUT socket facility then the low level external proces
20. r does not appear to work at all make the following checks to ensure that the fault is not due to another part of the system malfunctioning or not working correctly If the Front Panel Power led light does not come on when the rear panel mains switch is ON and you have confirmed that the local supply voltage is the same as the setting for the Amplifier then check that your mains plug is correctly wired into your local supply and that the IEC socket is pushed firmly into the corresponding connector on the rear panel of the Model 40B Then check any local house fuses as well as the rear panel fuse If the Front Panel led still doesn t come on then check with your local supplier as to your next course of action If visual indication is shown but no sound comes from the Model 40B then you should check the following Ensure that the source equipment and the Model 40B are switched ON Confirm that the Model 40B Volume Level adjustment is set correctly Confirm that the output sockets on the source equipment are correctly switched and adjusted to provide sufficient level to drive the subwoofer Confirm the integrity of all connections both at the Model 40B Sud and the source equipment end Ensure that the subwoofer is switched OFF when you do this Note that no sound will come from the subwoofer unless a signal is fed to it from the source equipment It is helpful if the source material used is particularly rich in bass output
21. sor output of your amplifier may be connected to the Input of the subwoofer Use a good quality screened interconnect cable to connect your amplifier to the Model 40B Refer to your amplifier instruction manual for guidance on how to use its external processor facility See Figure 2 LEFT RIGHT ela 0 SATELLITE SATELLITE g are SPEAKER SPEAKER o are l ejo d a 2 A Slice sa PROCESSOR alia AMPLIFIER o 5 R R MODEL 40B SUBWOOFER 2 0090 Figure 2 4 2 2 Direct output sockets Low level The phono type output sockets are linked internally to the Input sockets and can be used to feed the stereo Left and Right input signals to other equipment such as your external processor IN sockets or to a power amplifier Screened interconnect cables should be used when using these sockets See Figure 2 Ben i 4 2 3 High Level Input terminals O When using the High Level Input terminals it is quite acceptable to connect your satellite The 4 mm Binding Post terminals marked L and L for the Left channel input and R speakers to the High Level terminals rather than directly to your existing amplifier if this makes and R for the Right channel input enable the user to feed the speaker output of a stereo the installation of speaker cables easier See Figure 4 amplifier into the subwoofer for subsequent attenuation and filtering Bass frequencies are then boosted by the Model

23. woofer You may need the instruction book that came with your system to answer some of these questions For use with Dolby Pro Logic and Surround Sound systems The output from either Dolby Pro Logic or Surround Sound products can be fed to the Input sockets if you have a stereo output If you have only a single mono subwoofer output on your amplifier processor you should feed the signal to the Left channel input socket and then connect a single phono phono lead from the Left channel output socket to the Right channel input socket If your Home Theatre system amplifier does not have any line level RCA Phono output sockets available You can only use the speaker output from your integrated or power amplifier Connect your amplifier speaker output terminals to the Model 40B Left and Right High Level inputs using good quality speaker cable See Section 4 2 3 This need not be a heavy or thick gauge as the Model 40B will not be drawing any current You should ensure that when you connect these additional speaker cables to your amplifier that no stray strands of cable touch any of the other terminals as damage may be caused to your amplifier power amplifier For use in stereo hi fi systems Connect the Left and Right pre amplifier output sockets to the Input sockets on the rear of the Model 40B Amplifier using good quality screened cables The feed to your power amplifier can then be taken from the Direct output sockets on the rear of the subwoofer
