TELECOM inPHONe Tremolo User u Introducing Tremolo Your Tremolo telephone is a modern electronic telephone which has been approved for use with push button dialling last number redial and secrecy facility This booklet has been written to show you how to use your new telephone and get the best from it Please read the following pages care fully before using your Tremolo Initial Check All Inphones are thoroughly checked by British Telecom and leave us in perfect condition If however your telephone does appear to be unsatis factory in any way return it to your supplier at once for a replacement HANDSET SECRECY BUTTON VOLUME CONTROL LAST NUMBER REDIAL BUTTON Connection Tremolo is designedto be connectedto the exchange bythe new plugand socket system To connect your phone just plug the loose end of the line cord into the socket on the wall This system enables you to plugthe phone into any of the special British Telecom sockets in your home or office Before you attempt to connect your Tremolo you must make sure that it is suitable for your installation full details are at the back of this booklet If you do not have a standard socket fitted or if you require another extension contact your local British Telecom Sales Office by phone the telephone number and address will be in the directory under British Telecom Alternatively you can complete the post card supplied with this guide and po
2. and refit it in the short cord channel to exit at the front of the set at Cord Channel Exit A See figure 2 SNOLLISOd DNIXI4 AA3449S DNILNNOW TIVM SILONIA q E JLON ojowu JNO Sununow jem 103 e dtuu l 3 Prepare the hook switch plunger for wall mounting by inserting the plunger insert which is supplied packed separately Ensure that the insert is firmly seated before snapping off the tab 4 Place enclosed template against wall in the required position Mark screw fixing positions 5 Drill two holes 1 inch deep using a 1 4 inch or 6mm drill 6 Place enclosed plugs in the holes and screw the 2 x 8mm pan head screws in leaving the heads approximately 1 4 inch from the wall 7 Locate the telephone base on the screw heads and push the telephone firmly down If the telephone appears loose remove and tighten the two screws further 8 Replace the telephone 9 The Tremolo should sit on the wall with all four feet touching Re Additional Information Number of possible phones that can be connected together Although it is quite possible to have any number of sockets on your telephone circuit connecting a telephone to all of them may have undesirable results The British Telecom circuit provides only a relatively small current to make the telephone ring To make sure that each of the telephones you connect to your circuit receives a sufficiently strong share of the total curre

5. en out an Optional Service Contract after buying your Tremolo British Telecom will charge a fee if an engineer visits your home Please do not try to adjust or repair a phone yourself There is no part of your phone that you could possibly service and anything you might try to do could make any problem worse and invalidate your guarantee Care of your Tremolo We recommend that you clean your Tremolo with a damp cloth Do not spray aerosol polishes into any of the openings or vents and avoid the use of abrasive cleaners as these will damage the phones finish To preserve the appearance of the exterior finish avoid placing the tele phone in direct sunlight Since your telephone is an electrical device you should avoid using it near a bath The coiled handset cord will remain in good condition if care is taken to ensure that it does not twist or knot Maintenance of your Tremolo When you buy your Tremolo telephone it has a one year guarantee After that time you have the option of taking out a service contract with British Telecom s special maintenance and repair service For a small quarterly outlay British Telecom looks after your Tremolo there are no extra bills for repairs For more details contact your local British Telecom Sales Office or the shop where you bought the phone Guarantee 1 British Telecom guarantees this product for one year provided that The goods have only been used for their intended purpose and have not b
6. nt you may have to limit the total number of telephones on the circuit A standard circuit should in most cases provide enough current for any number of telephones providing that their Ringer Equivalence Number or REN add up to no more than 4 The Tremolo has a ringer equivalence number REN of 1 0 Any other instrument provided by British Telecom may be assumed to have a REN of 1 0 unless stated otherwise Where to connect the Tremolo Before purchasing your Tremolo telephone you should have ensured its suita bility for your existing or proposed type of installation Your version ofthe Tremolo isa loop disconnect instrument and therefore may be connected to the following types of installation Direct Exchange Lines DELs ie a line directly connected to a telephone exchange with its own telephone exchange number for the exclusive use of one customer Most domestic residential telephone lines are DELs Extensions provided with DEL Where your version of the Tremolo is not suitable for connection X Shared service party line installations As an extension to a payphone As an extension to a switchboard Checking for Faults How to check for a fault on your Tremolo If your Tremolo fails to work correctly carry out the following simple checks 1 Ensure the plug is properly inserted into the wall socket 2 Check the operating instructions have been followed correctly 3 If your phone still fails to work cor
7. ound it is engaged To operate the last number redial facility Lift the handset and listen for dial tone Press the LR button once you will hear the number being dialled The telephone will then automatically call the number When you key a new number this is stored in the Last Number Redial Memory and the old number is erased NOTE It is not recommended to use the Last Number Redial feature after you have received no tone or unobtainable tone you may have mis dialled so key the number in again If you still receive no tone or unobtainable tone call the operator 6 Wall Mounting your Tremolo Figure 1 shows the Tremolo with the Handset and Line Cords f tted as supplied ready for use on your table top The Line Cord sits in a long cord channel and feeds out from the rear of the telephone Exit C the handset cord sits in a Z shaped channel and feeds out from the front of the set Exit A If you intend to wall mount the Tremolo the two cords must first be re routed as follows CORD CHANNEL A CORD CHANNEL EXIT C x i LINE CORD CHANNEL FIG 1 CORD CHANNEL EXIT A CORD CHANNEL CORD CHANNEL EXITC EXIT B TEL LINE CORD CHANNEL FIG 2 CORD CHANNEL EXITA 1 Remove the Handset Cord from Channel Exit Aandre locate it in the short straight channel only exiting at the front of the set at Cord Channel Exit B 2 Remove the Line Cord from the long line cord channel
8. rectly you should follow the following procedures If you cannot make a call from your phone There may be no dialling tone for example disconnect any extension phones and try to make a call again on your first phone If you succeed in getting through re connect your extension phones until you locate the faulty phone or socket To establish if it is the phone that is faulty connect it to a socket where there is a phone that you know is working properly If the problem continues the extension phone is likely to be at fault If you cannot make a call with only the first phone connected you should report the situation to the British Telecom Fault Service Their number is usually 151 but it may vary locally check your Dialling Code Book to be sure Once you have spoken to an engineer he will be able to give you more advice and may do a remote test on your installation If you cannot get through to a number from any phone although you can hear a tone You should check that all other handsets on the same installation are properly replaced before trying to make a call again If your tone caller does not operate Connect the phone to a socket which you know is working properly provided of course that there is more than one socket on the installation If the prob lem continues your tone caller could be at fault but check that the total REN value of all the telephones connected does not exceed four Always remember that unless you have tak
9. st it to your local British Telecom Sales Office They will be happy to supply all the details about installation Number Information Label When you receive your Tremolo the label for your number and the trans parent label cover are both fitted in the telephone If you would like your number on the phone itself you can remove the label at any time simply by inserting a straightened paperclip or equivalent into the hole at one end of the label cover Then push toward the opposite side until the cover is bowed up enough to grasp with your thumb and forefinger Remove the label cover and label write your number on the label and place it in the recess at the front of the telephone Then put the label cover back in position by first inserting one end then flexing the other into place Operating your Tremolo Making a Call At this stage it would be useful to familiarise yourself with the manual dialling procedure and also to test the operation of your telephone Use the following procedures to dial a known number and set up an incom ing call Lift the handset and listen for dial tone Press the buttons for the number that you require When the other party answers check that the conversation is satisfactory and arrange for them to call you back Replace the handset to clear the call Remember that the signalling system in the telephone exchange will take the same time to send the number you key in as a conventional dial
10. telephone so although you may have finished keying the number you will not receive ringing tone until the call has been set up Answering a Call The tone caller which replaces the traditional bell will sound Lift the handset to speak Replace the handset to clear the call Adjusting the volume of the tone caller A 2 position high low volume control is located on the right hand side of the telephone case the high position is towards the rear of the telephone the low position towards the front __ SOFTER LOUDER Secrecy Most modern telephones including the Tremolo incorporate highly sensi tive electronic microphones if you simply put your hand over the mouth piece to make an aside the other person will still be able to hear you To overcome this the Tremolo lets you temporarily break the micro phone link between yourself and the person at the other end of the line You will continue to hear what they are saying though he or she will not be able to hear you This allows you to speak confidentially to another person in the room To operate the secrecy facility Press the S button and keep it held down Release the S button to resume normal conversation Last Number Redial Once you have dialled a number it is automatically stored in the tele phones memory circuit This function can store a number up to 17 digits long and is particularly useful when you have dialled a lengthy number and f
