4. 1 Fuel gauge The fuel gauge indicates the amount of fuel in the fuel tank The needle moves towards E Empty as the fuel level decreases When the needle reaches E approximately 3 0 L 0 79 US gal 0 66 Imp gal remain in the fuel tank If this occurs refuel as soon as possible When the key is turned to ON the fuel gauge needle will sweep once across the fuel level range and then return to the current amount in order to test the electrical circuit Odometer tripmeters fuel reserve tripmeter and clock g S 1 Odometer tripmeter fuel reserve tripme ter clock Push the SELECT switch to switch the display between the odometer mode ODO the tripmeter modes TRIP 1 and TRIP 2 and the clock mode in the following order ODO TRIP 1 gt TRIP 2 gt Clock gt ODO 4 5 If the fuel level warning light comes on see page 4 2 the odometer display will automatically change to the fuel re serve tripmeter mode F TRIP and start counting the distance traveled from that point In that case push the SELECT switch to switch the display between the various tripmeter odome ter and clock modes in the following or der F TRIP TRIP 1 gt 2 Clock ODO gt To reset a tripmeter select it by push ing the SELECT switch and then push the reset switch for at least one second If you do not reset the fuel re serve tripmeter manually it will reset it

15. another motorist s blind spot Many accidents involve inexperi enced operators In fact many op erators who have been involved in accidents do not even have a cur rent motorcycle license Make sure that you are qualified and that you only lend your mo torcycle to other qualified opera tors Know your skills and limits Staying within your limits may help you to avoid an accident We recommend that you prac tice riding your motorcycle where there is no traffic until you have become thoroughly famil iar with the motorcycle and all of its controls Many accidents have been caused by error of the motorcycle opera tor A typical error made by the op erator is veering wide on a turn due to excessive speed or under cornering insufficient lean angle for the speed Always obey the speed limit and never travel faster than warrant ed by road and traffic conditions Always signal before turning or changing lanes Make sure that other motorists can see you The posture of the operator and passenger is important for proper control The operator should keep both hands on the handlebar and both feet on the operator foot rests during operation to main tain control of the motorcycle The passenger should always hold onto the operator the seat strap or grab bar if equipped with both hands and keep both feet on the passenger footrests Never carry a passenger unless he or she can firmly place both feet

18. it 6 2 ECA10260 NOTICE Even with the transmission in the neutral position do not coast for long periods of time with the engine off and do not tow the motorcycle for long dis tances The transmission is properly lubricated only when the engine is running Inade quate lubrication may damage the transmission Always use the clutch while changing gears to avoid damag ing the engine transmission and drive train which are not designed to withstand the shock of forced shifting EAU16681 To start out and accelerate 1 2 Pull the clutch lever to disengage the clutch Shift the transmission into first gear The neutral indicator light should go out Open the throttle gradually and at the same time release the clutch lever slowly OPERATION AND IMPORTANT RIDING POINTS 4 At the recommended shift points shown in the following table close the throttle and at the same time quickly pull the clutch lever in 5 Shift the transmission into second gear Make sure not to shift the transmission into the neutral posi tion 6 Open the throttle part way and gradually release the clutch lever 7 Follow the same procedure when shifting to the next higher gear TIP When shifting gears in normal operat ing conditions use the recommended shift points EAU16700 To decelerate 1 Apply both the front and the rear brakes to slow the motorcycle 2 Shift the transmission int

22. the ignition circuit cut off system The vehicle must not be ridden with the sidestand down or if the side stand cannot be properly moved up or does not stay up otherwise the sidestand could contact the ground and distract the operator resulting in a possible loss of control Yamaha s ignition circuit cut off system has been designed to assist the operator in fulfilling the respon sibility of raising the sidestand be fore starting off Therefore check this system regularly as described EWA10240 4 17 below and have a Yamaha dealer re pair it if it does not function proper ly INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS EAU44892 Ignition circuit cut off system The ignition circuit cut off system com prising the sidestand switch clutch switch and neutral switch has the fol lowing functions e It prevents starting when the trans mission is in gear and the side stand is up but the clutch lever is not pulled EN e It prevents starting when the trans mission is in gear and the clutch le ver is pulled but the sidestand is still down e Itcutsthe running engine when the transmission is in gear and the sid estand is moved down Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut off system according to the following procedure 4 18 INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS With the engine turned off 1 Move the sidestand down 2 Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to Cy 3 T
