UNLEADED GAS TROY BILT 2 CYCLE OIL 1 US GALLON 4 0 FL OZ 3 8 LITERS 118 ml MIXING RATIO 32 1 Fig 4 1 Oil and Gas Mixing Instructions Old and or improperly mixed fuel are the main reasons for the unit not running properly Be sure to use fresh clean unleaded fuel Follow the instructions carefully for the proper fuel oil mixture Definition of Blended Fuels Today s fuels are often a blend of gasoline and oxygenates such as ethanol methanol or MTBE ether Alcohol blended fuel absorbs water As little as 1 water in the fuel can make fuel and oil separate It forms acids when stored When using alcohol blended fuel use fresh fuel less than 60 days old Using Blended Fuels If you choose to use a blended fuel or its use is unavoidable follow recommended precautions e Always use fresh fuel mix per your operator s manu al e Always agitate the fuel mix before fueling the unit e Drain the tank and run the engine dry before storing the unit Using Fuel Additives The bottle of TROY BILT 2 Cycle oil that came with your unit contains a fuel additive which will help inhibit corrosion and minimize the formation of gum deposits It is recommended that you use only TROY BILT 2 Cycle oil with this unit 10 If unavailable use a good 2 cycle oil designed for air cooled engines along with a fuel additive such as STA BIL Gas Stabilizer or an equival2. Choke Lever Wimp ahh lt Start A Starter Rope STARTING INSTRUCTIONS A WARNING Operate this unit only in a well ventilated area outdoors Carbon monoxide exhaust fumes can be lethal in a confined area Section 5 Operation Avoid accidental starting Be in the starting position whenever pulling the starting rope To avoid serious personal injury the operator and unit must be in a stable position while starting STARTING INSTRUCTIONS 1 Mix gas with oil Fill fuel tank with fuel oil mixture See Section 4 Oil and Fuel Put the On Off Stop Control in the START I position Fig 5 1 Fully press and release primer bulb slowly 5 to 7 times Fuel should be felt and visible in the bulb Fig 5 2 If fuel hasn t entered the bulb press three more times or until it does Place the choke lever in the START A position Fig 5 2 With the unit on the ground squeeze the throttle control and hold Pull starter rope briskly Fig 5 3 Continue pulling until the engine sounds as though it wants to run normally 2 to 5 pulls NOTE Squeeze the throttle control until the engine has started and warmed up 6 Place the choke lever in the RUN B position Fig 5 2 N w gt A a 7 Pull starter rope briskly 1 to 3 times to start the engine Fig 5 3 8 If the engine does not start repeat steps 4 through 7 NOTE If the engine floods while trying to start

Shaft Grip Air Filter Cover Throttle Control On Off Stop Control D Handle Shaft Housing Choke Lever Primer Bulb Gear Housing Cutting Attachment Shield M 3 eh XA ee e Cutting Attachment _ Line Cutting Blade Shaft Grip Fig 3 1 4 Screws Minimum 6 inches 15 24 cm D Handle gt Bottom Clamp 4 Nut b soe ee Section 3 Assembly On some units the D handle may be preinstalled and only require loosening the screws and adjusting the D handle to the operator Go to step 4 for adjusting the D handle if preinstalled INSTALLING AND ADJUSTING THE D HANDLE 1 Remove the screws nuts and bottom clamp piece that were installed on the D handle for shipping 2 Place D handle the over the shaft housing and onto the bottom clamp Fig 3 1 Place it a minimum of 6 inches 15 24 cm from the end of the shaft grip 3 Hold each hex nut in the bottom clamp recess with a finger Start screws with a large Phillips screw driver Do not tighten until you make the handle adjustment 4 If it was preinstalled loosen the screws on the D handle just enough to move the D handle 5 While holding the unit in the operating position Fig 3 2 position the D handle to the location that provides you the best grip 6 Tighten the clamp screws evenly until the D handle is secure Section 4 Oil and Fuel

9. 0 feet 6 1 m of new trimming line Insert one end of the line through one of the two holes in the inner reel Fig 6 6 Pull the line through the inner reel until only about 4 inches is left out 9 Insert the end of the line into the open hole in the inner reel and pull the line tight to make the loop as small as possible Fig 6 6 10 Before winding split the line back about 6 inches 11 Wind the line in tight even layers in the direction indicated on the inner reel NOTE Failure to wind the line in the direction indi cated will cause the cutting attachment to operate incorrectly 12 Insert the ends of the line into the two holding slots Fig 6 7 13 Insert the ends of the line through the eyelets in the outer spool and place inner reel with spring inside the outer spool Fig 6 8 Push the inner reel and outer spool together While holding the inner reel and outer spool grasp the ends and pull firmly to release the line from the holding slots in the reel NOTE The spring must be assembled on the inner reel before reassembling the cutting attachment 14 Hold the inner reel in place and install the Bump Knob by turning counterclockwise Tighten securely INSTALLING A PREWOUND REEL 1 Hold the outer spool with one hand and unscrew the Bump Knob clockwise Fig 6 1 Inspect the bolt inside the Bump Knob to make sure it moves freely Replace the Bump Knob if damaged 2 Remove the old inner reel from the out

13. e and let it run at a high idle for a minute to warm up 2 Release the throttle trigger and let the engine idle If the engine stops insert a small phillips or flat blade screwdriver into the screw next to the air filter cover Fig 6 12 Turn the idle speed screw in clockwise 1 8 of a turn at a time as needed until the engine idles smoothly NOTE The cutting attachment should not rotate when the engine idles 3 If the cutting attachment rotates when the engine idles turn the idle speed screw counterclockwise 1 8 of a turn at a time as needed to reduce idle speed Checking the fuel mixture cleaning the air filter and adjusting the idle speed screw should solve most engine problems If not ana e The engine will not idle e The engine hesitates or stalls on acceleration e There is a loss of engine power have the carburetor adjusted by an authorized service dealer 0 025 inch 0 655 mm A Fig 6 13 Maintenance continued REPLACING THE SPARK PLUG Use a Champion RCJ6Y spark plug or equivalent The correct air gap is 0 025 inch 0 655 mm Remove the plug after every 50 hours of operation and check its condition 1 Stop the engine and allow it to cool Grasp the plug wire firmly and pull the cap from the spark plug 2 Clean dirt from around the spark plug Remove the spark plug from the cylinder head by turning a 5 8 inch socket counterclockwise
14. e in the tank where fumes may reach an open flame or spark e Allow the engine to cool before storing e Store the unit locked up to prevent unauthorized use or damage e Store the unit in a dry well ventilated area e Store the unit out of the reach of children LONG TERM STORAGE If the unit will be stored for an extended time 1 Drain all fuel from the gas tank into a container Do not use fuel that has been stored for more than 60 days Dispose of the old fuel in accordance to Federal State and Local regulations 2 Start the engine and allow it to run until it stalls This ensures that all gasoline has been drained from the carburetor 3 Allow the engine to cool Remove the spark plug and put 1 oz 30 ml of high quality motor oil into the cylinder Pull the starter rope slowly to distrib ute the oil Reinstall the spark plug NOTE Remove the spark plug and drain all of the oil from the cylinder before attempting to start the trimmer after storage 4 Thoroughly clean the unit and inspect for any loose or damaged parts Repair or replace damaged parts and tighten loose screws nuts or bolts The unit is ready for storage TRANSPORTING e Allow the engine to cool before transporting e Secure the unit while transporting e Drain the gas tank before transporting e Tighten gas cap before transporting Section 7 Troubleshooting CAUSE On Off Stop Control is in STOP position Empty fuel tank Primer bulb wa
15. educe cutting efficiency and may overload the engine Cut grass over 8 inches 200 mm by working from top to bottom in small increments to avoid prema ture line wear or engine drag Cut from left to right whenever possible Cutting to the right improves the unit s cutting efficiency Clippings are thrown away from the operator Slowly move the trimmer into and out of the cutting area at the desired height Move either in a for ward backward or side to side motion Cutting shorter lengths produces the best results Trim only when grass and weeds are dry The life of your cutting line is dependent upon e Following the previous trimming techniques e What vegetation is being cut e Where it s being cut For example the line will wear faster when trimming against a foundation wall as opposed to trimming around a tree Fig 5 6 NOTE Some maintenance procedures may require special tools or skills If you are unsure about these procedures take your unit to an authorized service dealer MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE These required maintenance procedures should be performed at the frequency stated in the table They should also be included as part of any seasonal tune up Operation continued DECORATIVE TRIMMING Decorative trimming is accomplished by removing all vegetation around trees posts fences etc Rotate the whole unit so that the cutting attachment is at a 30 angle to the ground Fig 5 6 Secti
16. ent Add 0 8 oz 23 ml of fuel additive per gallon of fuel according to the instructions on the container NEVER add fuel addi tives directly to the unit s fuel tank A CAUTION For proper engine operation and maximum relia bility pay strict attention to the oil and fuel mix ing instructions on the 2 cycle oil container Using improperly mixed fuel can severely dam age the engine Thoroughly mix the proper ratio of 2 cycle engine oil with unleaded gasoline in a separate fuel can Use a 32 1 fuel oil ratio Do not mix them directly in the engine fuel tank See Figure 4 1 for specific gas and oil mixing ratios NOTE One gallon 3 8 liters of unleaded gasoline mixed with one 4 oz 118 ml bottle of TROY BILT 2 CYCLE OIL makes a 32 1 fuel oil ratio A WARNING Gasoline is extremely flammable Ignited Vapors may explode Always stop the engine and allow it to cool before filling the fuel tank Do not smoke while filling the tank Keep sparks and open flames at a distance from the area A WARNING Remove fuel cap slowly to avoid injury from fuel spray Never operate the unit without the fuel cap securely in place A WARNING Add fuel in a clean well ventilated area outdoors Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately Avoid creat ing a source of ignition for spilt fuel Do not start the engine until fuel vapors dissipate NOTE Dispose of the old fuel oil mix in accordance to Federal State and Local regulations
