V or Video and play the audio video source ac cording to its instructions Note If you use the EARPHONE jack use the TV s VOLUME control to adjust the volume CONNECTING POWER Plug the TV s AC power cord into a standard AC power outlet CONNECTING EARPHONES For private listening plug a pair of ear phones with a s inch mini plug not supplied into the EARPHONE jack on the right side of the TV EARHONE Listening Safely To protect your hearing follow these guidelines when you use earphones e Set the volume to the lowest set ting before you begin listening Af ter you begin listening adjust the volume to a comfortable level Do not listen at extremely high volume levels Extended high volume listening can lead to per manent hearing loss Once you set the volume do not increase it Over time your ears adapt to the volume level so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing e KA Zs P Y 16 289 fm Page 8 Tuesday July 20 1999 10 57 AM INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL S BATTERIES The remote control requires two AA batteries not supplied for operation For the longest battery life use alka line batteries Radio Shack Cat No 23 552 To ensure consistent opera tion change the batteries about once a year Batteries 1 Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing down and slid ing it in the direction of the
12. a For the best reception we recommend you use an outdoor antenna Note Before you connect the TV to an outdoor antenna inspect the antenna and the antenna s cable Severely weathered antennas and antenna ca bles can reduce the signal quality Your local Radio Shack store sells re placement antenna cable 300 ohm flat wire or 75 ohm coaxial cable and a wide variety of outdoor antennas The antenna connection you use de pends on the type of antenna and ca ble you have Warning When installing an outdoor antenna read and follow all instruc tions and cautions that accompany the antenna e If you have a combination VHF UHF antenna and the antenna uses 75 ohm coaxial cable con nect the cable directly to the TV s VHF UHF 75Q terminal VHF UHF Antenna VHF UHF 752 Terminal 75 Ohm Coaxial Cable e KA Zs VJ F S 16 289 fm Page 6 Tuesday July 20 1999 10 57 AM e If you have a combination VHF UHF antenna and the antenna uses 300 ohm flat wire connect the flat wire to the screw terminals on the supplied 300 to 75 ohm adapter Then connect the adapter to the TV s VHF UHF 759 terminal VHF UHF 759 Terminal VHF UHF Antenna 300 to 75 Ohm Adapter 300 Ohm Flat Wire If you have separate VHF and UHF antennas use a VHF UHF combiner not supplied to com bine the VHF and UHF signals Then connect the combiner s 75 ohm connector to the TV s VHF UHF 75Q termina
13. ears USING CLOSED CAPTIONS Closed captioning displays the audio portion of a television program as writ ten words that appear on the television screen in a form similar to English subtitles Closed captions allow view ers to read the dialogue and narration of television programs Caption signals are transmitted as part of the TV broadcast and then decoded by the TV to display as words Caption Tips e Sometimes TV stations broadcast two different caption signals on the same channel By selecting MODE 1o0rMODE 2 under MODE SELECTION you can choose which signal to view MODE 1 is usually the signal with the cap tions while MODE 2 might show demonstration or programming in formation Not all TV broadcasts include closed caption signals Check your local programming guide e Sp Zs Y 16 289 fm Page 18 Tuesday July 20 1999 10 57 AM e Your TV might not properly re ceive caption signals in the follow ing situations Ignition Black spots or horizontal streaks appear picture flutters or drifts Usually caused by interfer ence from an automobile ignition system neon lamps drills or oth er electrical appliances Ghosts Double images appear Ghosts are caused by the televi sion signal following two paths the direct path and another reflected from a building hill or other object Changing the direction or position of the antenna might improve the reception Snow Small dots in
14. ere are ad ditional channels you want to add or delete you can manually add or delete them Using Automatic Programming 1 Press TV VIDEO so TV is selected 2 Press SET UP on the remote con trol or FUNCTION on the front panel until AUTO PROGRAM ap pears on the screen Ea 3 Press VOL or The TV auto matically scans and memorizes all active channels in your area Note You can press any button on the remote control or front panel to stop automatic program ming When the TV has scanned and stored all active channels it stops on the nearest programmed chan nel to where you started Now when you press CH or the TV skips inactive channels Note If the TV is unplugged for more than 24 hours you must repeat auto matic channel programming to restore channels in memory Manually Adding a Channel To add a channel that was not stored during automatic programming follow these steps 1 Press TV VIDEO so TV is selected 13 e Sp Lis VJ F S 16 289 fm Page 14 Tuesday July 20 1999 10 57 AM 2 Select the input signal AIR or CABLE Use the remote controls number button s to select the channel you want to store Press SET UP on the remote con trol until the channel number ADD and DELETE appear on the screen Press VOL or so the arrow points to ADD The on screen display automati cally clears in about 5 seconds Or you can pre
