2. oe ee ee EE EEE a SHR RBBB RES SREC RHEE ESES TESTTE QUICK START GUIDE Welcome to DaScratch Thank you for purchasing DaScratch is the ultimate touch sensitive controller DaScratch allows you to control your music software in new and exciting ways Using a new touch sensitive technology called StanTouch DaScratch allows you to use faders buttons and an innovative scratch and scroll surface to touch and interact with your sound in new ways yet with a familiar analog feel So if you are a DJ VJ musician multimedia artist or producer you can expand your creativity via this compact controller I m sure you re anxious to play so lets get started Connecting DaScratch You ve probably noticed that the USB cable is included separately below DaScratch in the box and that there is no apparent USB jack on the DaScratch It s actually hidden in a compartment on the bottom of the controller This compartment can be used as a storage bay for the USB cable when travelling To open the back first look for 2 knobs and turn them so that they are oriented vertically When both knobs are turned remove the back by pulling the bottom of the panel up When the back panel is off you will see the USB jack close to top of the unit along with a lot of extra room wonder what that is for Plug the cable into the jack Notice that you are able to route the cable o

G and VINYL The DECK button allows you to switch to another virtual deck in a sense giving you 2 decks of control with one DaScratch When switching decks you will be in Deck B which will be illuminated on the top of the unit When selecting different modes the center section will change its functionality Center Section The Center Section has 3 main modes Slider Circle and Button mode The following diagrams show how each mode is set up and what it can be used for in an application The buttons around the circular center section will always act as triggers regardless of which mode the center section is in Within each mode the center section and 4 buttons around it will change their MIDI messages so buttons sliders within each mode can map to separate functions in the DJ software without conflict Slider mode WZ 2 _ Used in EQ and Used for Control of knobs and sliders Slider mode gives the user 3 variable controls which can be used by sliding your finger up and down the areas next to the 3 LED meter bars A slider may be changed by dragging a finger across the surface or you may place your finger in an absolute position on the slider and its position will jump immediately to that point 2 fingers may be used to trigger from one position to the next For instance holding one finger on the bottom of a slider and tapping the top with a second finger will make the position update to the top of control for as lon
8. e an application specific preset you do not need to read the below sections about the generic preset or MIDI Learn If you are looking to try an application with DaScratch some demo versions are available on the Stanton website 1 Go to www stantondj com dascratch and check for the latest preset for your application You may also download demo applications from this location 2 Download the preset The presets will load by dragging them into DaRouter or by pressing open and browsing to them manually Once you have loaded the preset in DaRouter you ll be presented with a dialog that will ask if you would like to read the included documentation Read the documentation for information on how DaScratch works specifically with your application as each preset implementation is different Using Generic Preset The generic preset is provided to allow you to MIDI map DaScratch into an application that does not have direct application support The generic preset will load with DaRouter by default unless you load an application specific preset instead To understand how the generic preset works and how to MIDI map with it continue reading the Generic Preset Functionality and MIDI Mapping sections of the Quick Start Guide Generic Preset Functionality wi stanton When using DaScratch with the default generic preset loaded in DaRouter you may utilize the different performance modes to co
9. e selected the correct preset If it s correct check to make sure the aliases in the preset are correctly assigned If your application has some kind of a MIDI setup file make sure that is also correctly selected The application I m using is not receiving any MIDI messages but DaScratch seems to be working fine it responds to preset changes and user input normally If it looks like DaScratch is running normally but your application isn t receiving MIDI messages the wrong ones then it s likely that you have the wrong MIDI interface selected in your application When using DaRouter you should select the virtual MIDI port Stanton DaRouter Virtual In Out Selecting USB Audio Device or SCS 3d in your performance application will only give you the raw output of DaScratch not the output of DaRouter 4 It is very difficult to turn the knobs on the back of the unit when removing the rear cover Especially when DaScratch is new those knobs can be hard to turn with just your fingers On the top of each knob is a slot in which the edge of a coin can be placed to make turning them easier 5 1 do not have an Internet connection and am unable to download any software associated with DaScratch If you are unable to connect to the Internet Stanton will provide you with the needed software and documentation free of charge Call Stanton Support at 1 877 578 6866 and it will be shipped out to you 6 My p
10. g as the second finger is held on the surface Once the second finger is released the control will jump back to the first fingers position Circle mode Used in VINYL Used for Control of knobs and sliders In Circle mode there is one slider in the center of the surface and a circular slider going around the perimeter of the surface The outer ring and inner slider will work in absolute mode when using the generic preset and just like with the slider mode you may perform finger jumps to quickly change a parameter in real time Circle Mode is the default mode of DaScratch That is to say that if you plug DaScratch into your computer without using DaRouter software it will operate in Circle mode But keep in mind that without DaRouter Mode Selector buttons Vinyl EQ Loop etc will only send note data and will not change the operation of DaScratch You will need to run the DaRouter software in order to utilize that functionality Button mode Used in LOOP and TRIG Used for Control of buttons and notes In Button mode zones highlighted in diagram to the left will as triggers to control buttons in an application For example these functions could be assigned to loop lengths or cue points in a DJ application Multiple buttons may be pressed at once when button mode is in use Transport Section The Transport Section consists of four push button switches labeled PLAY CUE SYNC
11. n website Perform the following steps to install DaRouter and presets on your computer 1 Download DaRouter off of Stanton s website at the following location www stantondj com dascratch 2 Install DaRouter In Windows XP Vista Double click the DaRouter setup file and follow instructions provided the Stanton DaRouter Setup Wizard Towards the end of the installation Windows will ask you to install a driver Accept and if prompted choose Continue Anyway Double click the DaRouter dmg file Then just drag the DaRouter icon into your Applications folder 3 With your DaScratch connected to your computer start the DaRouter software by double clicking its icon Using DaRouter When using DaRouter there are two basic types of presets that you may utilize generic and application specific The generic preset allows you to configure the application to DaScratch through conventional MIDI Learn However the application specific presets are designed to work specifically with certain applications and provide logic in DaScratch that is focused towards that application Using Application Specific Presets If you already have a DJ application installed on your computer chances are there is already a preset available for it The presets are updated as applications add new features and it s always suggested to use the provided preset first over trying to MIDI Learn the functionality yourself If you are going to us
12. ntrol a variety of functions in the DJ application With the generic preset DaScratch is broken into the following main sections Sliders Mode Switcher Center Section and Transport Section Sliders On the top of the unit are 2 StanTouch sliders The top left slider works in Absolute mode whereas the top right slider works in Relative mode Absolute mode allows quick real time changes to be made whereas relative mode allows finer adjustments to be made Absolute One Finger Touching the surface will immediately change the parameter being controlled according to exactly where your finger is placed Two Fingers When two fingers are used the parameter will follow the placement of the first finger then instantaneously jump to the second finger position as soon as it touches the surface Releasing the second finger will cause the parameter to jump back to the first fingers position This feature can be used for cutting in parameters such as EQ s FX volume Relative Touching the surface and sliding your finger in a positive or negative direction will increase or decrease the parameter based on how fast and far you move your finger across the surface Sweeping your finger across the surface multiple times will allow for full range of the parameter control Mode Switcher The Mode Switcher allows you to change what the center section does based upon which mode is selected The modes include FX EQ LOOP TRI
