1. SONY VPCCW Series Hard Disk Drive Replacement Instructions IMPORTANT PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU START These easy instructions are intended to guide you through the replacement process v Before you begin place your notebook computer on a clean or covered surface to avoid damage to the computer s case v Follow the ESD Electrostatic Discharge damage prevention instructions o Hold parts by the edges away from exposed circuitry when possible o Donot walk around excessively as this promotes static build up v Remove jewelry before you begin work to avoid scratching the surface of your notebook computer v The appearance of the electronic components shown in the illustrations may be different from the components shipped This slight difference does not affect the accuracy of these instructions Sony is not responsible for damage caused by incorrect handling of the notebook computer e Step 1 Prepare the Computer y eee Make sure the computer is turned off the lid is closed and the AC Adapter disconnected Failure to do so an result in damage to the computer Place the computer upside down on a protected surface with the front edge facing you Step 2 Remove the Battery Pack Locate the release tab as shown in the picture 1 Slide the left battery tab to the Unlock position 2 With your finger slide the right battery tab in the release direction and hold2. 3 Hook your finger under the battery pack and lift ui Look for the screw hole with 2 dots HDD Removal Steps 3 7 Step 3 Rotate the computer with the Hard Disk Drive HDD Bay facing you as shown in the picture Using the enclosed magnetic screwdriver remove the 2 screws securing the hard drive access cover P N 989200670 Rev A 1 3 SONY VPCCW Series Hard Disk Drive Replacement Instructions Step 4 Remove HDD access cover and set aside Step 5 Using the enclosed magnetic screwdriver remove the 2 screws securing the hard drive assembly Step 6 Locate the black plastic tab on the hard drive assembly and gently pull the original hard drive to the right to disconnect from connector Step 7 Once the hard drive assembly is disconnected from the connector carefully lift the hard drive assembly to remove from hard drive bay HDD Disassembly Steps 8 10 Step 8 After the HDD is completely removed identify the 4 side screws that mount the HDD bracket to the HDD Step 9 Holding the edge of the HDD remove each screw and set the screw aside These screws will be used to mount the HDD bracket onto the new HDD Step 10 All 4 screws and bracket should now be removed from old HDD Set old HDD aside P N 989200670 Rev A HDD Assembly Steps 11 13 Step 11 Prepare the new HDD provided for assembly 2 3 Step 12

Place the HDD bracket over the new HDD VPCCW Series Hard Disk Drive Replacement Instructions A HDD Reinstallation Steps 14 17 NOTE Proper mounting Of Step 13 Re install the 4 previously 7 HDD bracket can be verified with removed screws to properly mount the Step 14 Initiate hard drive re the HDD connectors appearing HDD bracket to the HDD installation by sliding the hard drive between two tabs assembly back into the hard drive to the left carefully reconnecting the previously removed cover and install the 2 screws hard drive to the connector previously removed Step 18 Reinstall the battery pack and reconnect the AC Adaptor Power on your computer and continue with the recovery process by following the instructions described on the back of the recovery disk s case Return the old HDD to Sony following the included shipping instructions P N 989200670 Rev A 3 3
