Connecting your equipment 3 If the device can output digital audio connect an optical type digital audio output from the recorder to the OPTICAL IN 2 DVR1 input Use an optical cable for the connection Using the component video jacks Component video should give superior picture quality when compared to composite You can also take advantage of progressive scan video if your Source and TV are both compatible which delivers a very stable tlicker free picture See the manuals that came with your TV and source component to check whether they are compatible with progressive scan video VSX 1018AH DVD player Note 1 Connect the component video outputs of your source to a set of ASSIGNABLE COMPONENT VIDEO inputs Connect using a three way component video cable e Since they are assignable it doesn t matter which component video inputs you use for which source After connecting everything you ll need to assign the component video inputs see The nput Setup menu on page 607 2 Connect the COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT jacks to the component video inputs on your TV or monitor Use a three way component video cable Connecting digital audio sources This receiver has both digital inputs and outputs allowing you to connect digital audio components for playback and for making digital recordings Most digital components also have analog connections See Connecting analog audio sources on page 20 if

Can t record video e Check that the source is not copy protected e The video converter is not available when making recordings Check that the same type of video cable is used for connecting both the recorder and the video source the one you want to record to this receiver Noisy intermittent or distorted Sometimes a video deck may output a noisy video signal during scanning for example or the picture video quality may just be poor with some video game units for example The picture quality may also depend on the settings etc of your display device Switch off the video converter and reconnect the source and display device using the same type of connection component or composite then start playback again Settings Symptom Remedy The Auto MCACC Setup e The ambient noise level may be too high Keep the noise level in the room as low as possible see continually shows an error also Problems when using the Auto MCACTC Setup on page 11 If the noise level cannot be kept low enough you will have to set up the surround sound manually page 41 e When using only one surround back speaker connect it to the SURROUND BACK L Single terminals e To use a 5 1 channel speaker set use the surround speakers for the surround channel not the surround back channel e Make sure there are no obstacles between the speakers and the microphone After using the Auto MCACC There may have been some low frequency noise in the

Dolby Digital In addition to the format features above Dolby Digital decoders offer downmixing for compatibility with mono stereo and Dolby Pro Logic audio from a number of bit rates and channels Another feature called Dialog Normalization attenuates programs based on the average level of dialog in a program relative to its peak level also known as Dialnorm in order to achieve uniform playback level Dolby Digital Surround EX Dolby Digital Surround EX the EX stands for EXtended is an extension of Dolby Digital encoding whereby a surround back channel is matrixed into the surround left right channels for 6 1 channel playback This allows for compatibility with Dolby Digital 5 1 channel decoding as well as for decoding using Dolby Digital EX Dolby Pro Logic IIx and Dolby Surround Dolby Pro Logic IIx is an improved version of the Dolby Pro Logic II and Dolby Pro Logic decoding system Using the innovative steering logic circuit this system extracts Surround sound from sources as follows e Dolby Pro Logic 4 1 channel sound mono surround from any stereo source e Dolby Pro Logic Il 5 1 channel sound stereo surround from any stereo source e Dolby Pro Logic IIx 6 1 or 7 1 channel sound stereo Surround and surround back from two channel or 5 1 and 6 1 channel sources With two channel sources the 1 subwoofer channel is generated by bass management in the receiver Dolby Surround is a

Most components can be assigned to one of the input source buttons such as DVD or CD using the component s manufacturer preset code stored in the remote However there are cases where only certain functions may be controllable after assigning the proper preset code or the codes for the manufacturer in the remote control will not work for the model that you are using Note e You can cancel or exit any of the steps by pressing RECEIVER o go back a step press RETURN e After one minute of inactivity the remote automatically exits the operation Selecting preset codes directly SOURCE E SETUP DVD BD TV_ HDMI DVR 1 DVR2 cD CD R TV CTRL RECEIVER 1 While pressing the RECEIVER button press SETUP The indicator on the remote control blinks 2 Press the input source button for the component you want to control When assigning preset codes to TV CONTROL press TV CTRL here The indicator lights up Note 1 You can t assign the RECEIVER FM AM iPod USB XM or SIRIUS buttons 3 Use the number buttons to enter the 3 digit preset code see below The indicator blinks for half a second after you input each digit and shows a long two second blink once you have entered a valid code If the LED blinks three times it means an invalid code has been input or an error has occurred 4 Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the other components you want to control 5 When you re done press RECEIVER To try out the r

Place the mic at your 2nd reference point SN ENTER Start 4 Cancel Cancel Use to select the channel frequency and time setting Use to switch between them You can switch between your connected speakers excluding the subwoofer and display the measurements for the following frequencies 63Hz 125Hz 250Hz 500Hz 1kHz 2kHz 4kHz 8kHz and 16kHz Select the setting from the following time periods in milliseconds 0 20ms 10 30ms 20 40ms 30 50ms 40 60ms 50 70ms and 60 80ms This setting will be applied to all channels during calibration When you re finished select START It will take about 2 to 4 minutes for the calibration to finish After the Acoustic Calibration Equalization is set you are given the option to check the settings on screen Note 07 The System Setup menu Data Management This system allows you to store up to six MCACC presets allowing you to calibrate your system for different listening positions or frequency adjustments for the same listening position This is useful for alternate settings to match the kind of source you re listening to and where you re sitting for example watching movies from a sofa or playing a video game close to the TV From this menu you can check your current settings copy from one preset to another name presets for easier identification and clear any ones you don t need 1 Select Data Management from the System Setup menu

18. tighten the terminal until the wire is firmly clamped fig C fig A fig B ial ia l Banana plug connections If you want to use speaker cables terminated with banana plugs screw the speaker terminal fully shut then plug the banana plug into the end of the speaker terminal a A important e Please refer to the manual that came with your speakers for details on how to connect the other end of the speaker cables to your speakers e Other connections on page 51 provides greater detail on alternate speaker setups such as using speaker system B page 58 bi amping and bi wiring page 59 Placing the speakers Where you put your speakers in the room has a big effect on the quality of the sound The following guidelines should help you to get the best sound from your system e The subwoofer can be placed on the floor Ideally the other speakers should be at about ear level when you re listening to them Putting the speakers on the floor except the subwoofer or mounting them very high on a wall is not recommended e For the best stereo effect place the front speakers 2mto3m 6ft to 9 ft apart at equal distance from the TV When placing speakers near the TV we recommend using magnetically shielded speakers to prevent possible interference such as discoloration of the picture when the TV is switched on If you do not have magnetically shielded speakers and notice discoloration of the TV picture mov

20. 3b Fine SP Distance SL amp L SBL SL A 10 10 lslals SBL WAJE gt iS ot z SBR 6 03 3 Sw 12 01 7 Finish Finish The System Setup menu Listen to the reference speaker and use it to measure the target channel From the listening position face the two speakers with your arms outstretched pointing at each speaker Try to make the two tones sound as if they are arriving simultaneously at a position slightly in front of you and between your arm span oO C3 Q When it sounds like the delay settings are matched up press to confirm and continue to the next channel e For comparison purposes the reference speaker will change depending on which speaker you select e f you want to go back and adjust a channel simply use f to select it 4 When you re finished press RETURN You will return to the Manual MCACC setup menu Standing Wave Default setting ON ATT 0 0dB all filters Acoustic standing waves occur when under certain conditions sound waves from your speaker system resonate mutually with sound waves reflected off the walls in your listening area This can have a negative effect on the overall sound especially at certain lower frequencies Depending on speaker placement your listening position and ultimately the shape of your room it results in an overly resonant boomy sound
