C IS PLAYED BY PLUCKING THE STRING WITH THE RIGHT HAND WHILE TOUCHING THE STRING WITH THE LEFT INDEX FINGER AS LIGHTLY AS POSSIBLE DIRECTLY ABOVE THE TWELFTH FRET THE LEFT INDEX FINGER IS DRAWN AWAY AS QUICKLY AS POS SIBLE AFTER THE STRING IS PLUCKED PRO DUCING A CHIME EFFECT THIS CHIMED NOTE IS THEN COMPARED TO THE FRETTED NOTE FOR EVEN GREATER EASE AND A HIGH DEGREE OF ACCURACY WE RECOMMEND ONE OF THE MANY TYPES OF ELECTRONIC GUITAR TUNERS THAT ARE AVAILABLE FROM MOST MUSIC STORES THE TUNERS WHICH USE EITHER A METER OR A MOVING LED DISPLAY ARE USUALLY EASIER TO USE THAN THE TYPE WITH A NUMERICAL FRE QUENCY READOUT Setting Intonatio NOTE ALL GUITAR ADJUSTMENTS INTERACT CLOSELY WITH STRING INTONATION THESE ADJUST MENTS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE ANY ATTEMPT IS MADE TO SET STRING INTONATION AT THE BRIDGE 1 Ensure that the torsion rod and bridge height adjust ments have been made and are accurate 2 Tune the instrument to standard A 440 pitch 3 Hold the instrument in a normal playing position Do not exert any undue pressure on the neck as it will affect intonation settings 4 Play the first string open G and compareitto the pitch of the same string when it is played at the twelfth fret These notes should be the same 5 Using a flat head screwdriver adjust the length of the first string saddle so that the open note and the fretted note or harmonic are the same NOTE IT WILL OFTEN BE NECESSAR

L Five OPERATING GUIDE CONTROL OPERATION 1 Bypass Switch The Bypass Switch is a two position mini toggle located on the face of the instrument its purpose is to allow the player to convienently switch to the passive mode in the event of battery mal function or failure The up position of the switch is passive and bypasses the internal preamp This allows normal passive operation of the TL Five In the passive mode the Volume and Blend controls are operational and the High Control is converted to a standard high rolloif tone control NOTE If the Bypass Switch is operated when signal is present an audible pop may occur This is due to the rapid change in signal level sent to the input of the bass guitar amplifier The down position is active and engages the TL Five preamp with its active tone controls 2 Blend Control The Blend Control is offered for a wider variety of sounds than available from con ventional pickup selector switches It may be varied from the neck pickup full clockwise CW to the center detent both pickups to the bridge pickup full counterclockwise CCW or any biend in between Due to the nature of this control neither pickup is turned fully off 3 Volume Control This controlisconventional with full output in the CW position and no output in the CCW position 4 High Control The High Control is centered at2 5 KHz and has 12 dB boost CW and 12 dB cut CCW 5 Mid Control A Mid Control has

STRING REPLACEMENT BECOMES NECESSARY WE Last Fret 12th Fret TORSION ROD NUT First Fret E hen STRONGLY RECOMMEND OUR FIELD PROVEN HIGH QUALITY AND LONG LASTING PEAVEY STRINGS Case A durable molded case provides maximum protection and road durability The case features large storage areas atlatchlock to facilitate locking for air shipment The case may be cleaned with a damp cloth with or without soap Care should be taken to avoid wetting the plush lined interior Finish Your instrument hasa polyester urethane finish which is both durable and weather resistant but nevertheless needs care Automotive grade waxes will protect clean and shine it Between waxings the instrument should be wiped with a dry soft cloth Saddle Height Adjustment The five individual bridge saddles work to determine the overall string height individual string saddles can be adjusted to follow the curvature 12 radius of the neck to maximize string fret distance Use supplied Allen wrench to make the adjustment for each string NOTE This adjustment requires accurate gauges to measure proper string fret distances and the proper radius curvature between the neck and strings If you are unfamiliar with this type of adjustment we recommend that this setting be performed by qualified personnel at your authorized Peavey dealer String Intonation Accurate string intonation settings ensure that your instrume

TATE THE TORSION ROD NUT YOU SHOULD CONSULT YOUR PEAVEY DEALER OR THE PEAVEY FACTORY BEFORE ANY FURTHER ADJUSTMENT IS MADE 7 Repeat steps 1 through 6 until proper clearance has been reached NOTE STRING HEIGHT SHOULD BE ADJUSTED TO FIT YOUR OWN PARTICULAR PLAYING STYLE IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT SETTING THE STRING HEIGHT TOO LOW WILL RESULT IN EXCESSIVE STRING BUZZ AND RATTLE ESPECIALLY WITH A HEAVY PLAYING TECHNIQUE EXCESSIVELY HIGH ACTION WILL RESULT IN INTONATION PROBLEMS AND DECREASED PLAYABILITY String Spacing Adjustment The fully articulated Schaller bridge allows for max imum flexibility when adjusting spacing between strings To adjust loosen string then rotate saddle roller to desired position Retune string Strings String life may be greatly extended by frequent cleaning and wiping efter use Dirt and perspiration tend to build up on the underside of the strings so it is often necessary to slide a rag between the strings and the fingerboard Dirt laden strings cause tuning and into nation problems as well as rust and corrosion For best performance strings should be changed approximately once a month or every twenty four hours of playing Some players may find that they prefer to change strings more often NOTE YOUR INSTRUMENT IS EQUIPPED WITH HIGH QUALITY PEAVEY STRINGS THE INTONATION AND ACTION OF YOUR INSTRUMENT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY ADJUSTED FOR MAXIMUM PLAY ABILITY WITH THESE STRINGS WHEN

12. nt will play in tune at any point on the neck Although perfect intonation is a physical impossibility with a fretted instrument the correct settings with the bridge and saddle combination of the instrument will maximize the accuracy of individual notes up and down the neck Intonation is set by comparing the pitch of an open string to the pitch of the samesiring when itis played one octave higher at the twelfth fret The actual vibrating length of that string is varied until the notes are both at the right pitch The vibrating length of the string is altered by adjusting the individual bridge saddles either forward or backward depending on whether the fretted note is sharper or fiatterin pitch than the open note If the fretted note is sharper than the open note the vibrating length of the string must be increased move the bridge saddle to the rear away from the pickup If the fretted note is flat the vibrating length must be shortened move the bridge forward toward the pickup to sherten the length The instrument features four individual bridge saddles to allow accurate intonation compensation on each string NOTE IT IS OFTEN DIFFICULT FOR THE UNTRAINED EAR TO DETERMINE WHEN THE OPEN NOTE AND THE FRETTED NOTE ARE AT PRECISELY THE SAME PITCH EXACTLY ONE OCTAVE APART SOME PLAYERS FIND THAT COMPARING THE TWELFTH FRET HARMONIC OF THE STRING RATHER THAN THE OPEN NOTE TO THE FRETTED NOTE IS MUCH EASIER A HARMONI
13. r bass guitar amplifier Clockwise adjustments increase the outputs and counterclockwise adjustments decrease the output Those who have a heavy picking style or who play heavy pop bass may need to use the Low Gain or 2 Input on their bass amplifier 8 Battery The TL Five preamplifier is powered by a 9 volt transistor radio battery not included which has accessible separate battery compartment NOTE Peavey heavy duty or alkaline batteries are recom mended for reliability and langest battery life Low battery voltage will be indicated by fuzzy or distorted sound especially with higher tone and volume settings It is recommended the battery be changed every 80 to 100 hrs of use or every 6 months to help ensure a battery doesn t leak and damage the instrument NOTE Peavey Electronics assumes no responsibility for damage resulting from a leaking or defective battery Power is supplied to the preamp when a standard mono guitar cable is plugged into the instrument a stereo cable will not work It is recommended that the cable first be plugged into the TL Five then into the bass amplifier input To ensure longest battery life be sure to unplug the cable from the TL Five when not in use BATTERY COMPARTMENT Adjustment Your instrument has been carefully adjusted for accu rate intonation and playing ease at the Peavey factory However your playing style or playing requirements may necessitate additional adjustments a
14. t some time in the fulure These adjustments should be made by your Peavey dealer However with a little careand by adhering closely to the following instructions you may attempt these adjustments yourself CAUTION PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUC TIONS THOROUGHLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY ADJUSTMENTS Adjusting Torsion Rod To set the straightness or relief of the neck a Peavey torsion rod wrench No 75031001 must be used available from a Peavey Accessory Center 1 Tune the instrument to standard A 440 pitch 2 Check tor clearance between the strings 1 through 4 and the first fret IMPORTANT Use an accurate ruler or similar gauge for this measurement 3 This clearance should be no less than 1 32 and no more than 1 16 at the first fret 4 Check for clearance between the strings and the twelfth fret 5 This clearance should be no less than 1 16 and no more than 1 4 at the twelfth fret 6 To increase clearance loosen counterclockwise torsion rod nut To decrease clearance tighten clockwise the torsion rod nut The torsion rod nut is located underneath the plastic cover plate on the head stock CAUTION IT IS NOT USUALLY NECESSARY TO ROTATE THE TORSION ROD NUT MORE THAN ONE FULL TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION ONE QUARTER TO ONE HALF TURN IS NORMALLY SUFFICIENT TO MAKE MOST ADJUSTMENTS EXCESSIVE ROTATION MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE NECK AND TORSION ROD IF EXCESSIVE FORCE IS NECESSARY TO RO
