No 23 557 Follow these steps to install batteries 1 Pull up the black cassette compart ment latch and pull Ilust open the cassette compartment door 2 Press the battery compartment cover s tab in the lllust direction of the arrow and lift off the cover 5 po o AWA Zs 14 1233 fm Page 6 Friday July 2 1999 10 46 AM 3 Install the batteries over the ribbon as indicated by the polarity symbols and marked inside the compartment Cautions e Use only fresh batteries of the required size and recommended type e Do not mix old and new batteries different types of batteries standard alkaline or rechargeable or rechargeable batteries of different capacities 4 Replace the battery compartment cover then close the cassette compartment door and latch If the SCP 90 does not operate properly or if the sound becomes weak or distorted replace the batter ies Cautions e Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly 6 e AWA Zs 14 1233 fm Page 7 Friday July 2 1999 10 46 AM e Never leave dead old or weak batteries in the SCP 90 Batteries can leak chemicals that can corrode or damage electronic circuits e If you do not plan to power the SCP 90 with bat teries for several days or if you plan to power it using only an AC or DC adapter remove the bat teries to protect the SCP 90 from possible bat tery leakage Using AC Power To powe
3. pushed all the way into the socket e Internal batteries if installed automatically dis connect when you plug the adapter into the DC 3V jack e Disconnect the adapter and reinsert the jack s rubber plug when you are not using the SCP 90 11 40 AWA Zips 14 1233 fm Page 12 Friday July 2 1999 10 46 AM CONNECTING THE HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS To listen to your SCP 90 connect the supplied in ear sports headphones or other headphones or a pair of amplified speakers not supplied with a 1 s inch mini plug Pull out the attached rubber plug from the SCP 90 s PHONES jack then plug in the headphones or speak ers s inch plug Ilust When you are not using your SCP 90 and head phones or speakers are disconnected put the rubber plug back into the PHONES jack to protect against moisture and dust 12 i a 40 AWA Zips 14 1233 fm Page 13 Friday July 2 1999 10 46 AM Listening Safely To protect your hearing follow these guidelines when you use the headphones Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening After you begin listening adjust the volume to a comfortable level e Do not listen at extremely high volume levels Extended high volume listening can lead to per manent hearing loss e Once you set the volume do not increase it Over time your ears adapt to the volume level so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage
4. your hearing Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor ve hicle or riding a bicycle This can cause a traffic haz ard and can be illegal in some areas 13 6 AWA Zs 14 1233 fm Page 14 Friday July 2 1999 10 46 AM Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at nor mal volume levels they still can present a traffic haz ard USING THE BELT CLIP For hands free carrying slide the belt clip over your belt To remove the belt clip use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screw holding the clip Then lift off the clip Ilust To replace the belt clip position it as shown then re place and tighten the screw 14 o AWA Zs 14 1233 fm Page 15 Friday July 2 1999 10 46 AM RADIO OPERATION Important Make sure you have connected head phones or speakers to the SCP 90 1 Set RADIO OFF TAPE FM ST AM to FM ST or AM to turn on the radio Ilust 2 Adjust VOLUME to the desired listening level 3 Turn TUNING to select the desired station Ilust 15 o AWA Zips 14 1233 fm Page 16 Friday July 2 1999 10 46 AM Note The AM antenna is built in Rotate the cassette player to improve AM reception For the best FM reception fully extend the headphones or speakers cord 4 Set BASS BOOST to ON for an enhanced bass effect Set it to OFF for normal bass sound Add Illust 5 Set

7. day July 2 1999 10 46 AM TAPE TIPS Tape Quality For the best performance use only regular length 60 or 90 minute cassette tapes We do not recom mend long playing cassette tapes such as C 120s because they are extremely thin and can easily tan gle in the playback mechanism Restoring Tape Tension and Sound Quality After you play a cassette tape several times the tape might become tightly wound on the reels This can cause playback sound quality to deteriorate To restore the sound quality fast forward the tape from the beginning to the end of one side then turn it over and completely fast forward the other side Then loosen the tape reels by gently tapping each side of the cassette s outer shell on a flat surface 21 AWA ji 14 1233 fm Page 22 Friday July 2 1999 10 46 AM i Caution Be careful not to damage the cassette when tapping it Do not touch the exposed tape or al low any sharp objects near the cassette 22 6 AWA Zia 14 1233 fm Page 23 Friday July 2 1999 10 46 AM MAINTENANCE Your Optimus SCP 90 AM FM Stereo Cassette Play er is an example of superior design and craftsman ship The following suggestions will help you care for the SCP 90 so you can enjoy it for years Keep the SCP 90 dry If it gets wet wipe it dry e Use and store the SCP 90 only in normal tem perature environments e Handle the SCP 90 gently and carefully Don t drop it e Keep
