1. Panel C POWER button This button is used to set the A 1 VL to On or Off POWER indicator This indicator lights up when the A 1VL is ON While this indicator is illuminated you can operate the A 1 VL with the remote controller MUTING indicator This indicator lights up when the Muting function is set VOLUME control This control is used to set the volume of the A 1VL Rear Panel Remote control sensor This sensor receives control signals from the remote controller Input selector control This control is used to select following input sources CD LINE 1 LINE 2 TUNER and PHONO DIRECT button Turns on or off the DIRECT function When you use the A 1 VL as a power amplifier turn on the DIRECT function PHONO These analog inputs can be used to connect a turntable with a moving magnet cartridge TUNER These inputs can be used to connect a tuner CD These inputs can be used to connect a CD player with analog outputs PREOUT If you use the A 1VL as a preamp these analog pre out can be connected to the inputs on a power amp MAIN IN If you use the A 1 VL as a power amp these analog inputs can be connected to the outputs on a separate preamp ohms mn SPEAKEE SPEAKER IMPEDANCE SELECTOR AC INLET SPEAKERS These terminal posts are for connecting your speakers Grounding screw This screw is for connecting a turntable s ground wire

9. ary from country to country Make sure that the voltage in your area meets the voltage requirements printed on the A 1VL s rear panel AC230 240V 50 Hz Never Touch This Unit with Wet Hands Never handle this unit or its power cord while your hands are wet or damp If water or any other liquid gets inside this unit have it checked by your Onkyo dealer Installing This Unit e Install this unit in a well ventilated location Ensure that there s adequate ventilation all around this unit especially if it s installed in an audio rack If the ventilation is inadequate the unit may overheat lead ing to malfunction Do not expose this unit to direct sunlight or heat sources because its internal temperature may rise shortening the life of the optical pickup e Avoid damp and dusty places and places subject to vibrations from loudspeakers Never put the unit on top of or directly above a loudspeaker e Install this unit horizontally Never use it on its side or on a sloping surface because it may cause a malfunction e Ifyou install this unit near a TV radio or VCR the sound quality may be affected If this occurs move this unit away from the TV radio or VCR Moisture Condensation Moisture condensation may damage this unit Read the following carefully When you take a glass containing a cold drink outside on a summer s day drops of water called condensation form on the outside of the glass Similarly m
10. e DIRECT button to turn off the DIRECT function e Make sure that all audio connecting plugs are pushed in all the way page 9 e Make sure that the inputs and outputs of all components are connected properly e Make sure that the polarity of the speaker cables is correct and that the bare wires are in contact with the metal part of each speaker terminal page 9 e Make sure that the input source is properly selected page 12 e If the MUTE indicator blinks press the remote controller s MUTING button to ummute the A 1 VL page 12 e To use a turntable with an MC type cartridge requires a commercially available MC phono preamp page 10 e Make sure that none of the connecting cables are bent twisted or damaged Noise can be heard e Using cable ties to bundle audio cables with power cords speaker cables and so on may degrade the audio perfor mance so do not bundle cables and cords together e An audio cable may be picking up interference Try repositioning your cables Remote Controller The remote controller doesn t work e Make sure that the batteries are installed with the correct polarity page 8 e Install new batteries Don t mix different types of batteries or old and new batteries page 8 e Make sure that the remote controller is not too far away from the A 1 VL and that there s no obstruction between the remote controller and the A 1 VL s remote control sensor page 8 e Make sure that the A 1 VL is
11. e the A 1VL press the remote conitroller s MUTING button again CA Note a The Mute function is cancelled when the A 1VL is set to Off Enjoying Audio Sources Continued Using the DIRECT Function DIRECT You can use the A 1 VL as power amplifier by connecting a preamplifier 1 DIRECT Recording Unless you have the full consent of the copyright holder copyright laws prohibit using your recordings for anything other than personal enjoyment Press the DIRECT button ON The DIRECT function is enabled When connecting a preamplifier to the A 1 VL the A 1 VL will work as a power amplifier The audio signal from the component connected to the preamplifier will be output OFF The audio signal from the component connected to the A 1 VL will be output Notes e While the DIRECT function is turned on the A 1 VL works as a power amplifier and the VOLUME control of the A 1VL will not change the volume level Instead when you turn off the DIRECT function the A 1 VL outputs the audio signal at the level that its volume control is positioned Take notice the A 1VL s VOLUME control position before turning off the DIRECT function e Even when the DIRECT function is enabled the audio signal from the component selected using the input selector control will be output through the PREOUT terminal Select an input source to record Turn the Input selector control to select the component that outputs the sourc
12. e you want to record The signal from the component connected to the LINE 2 terminal cannot be recorded Prepare the recorder e Put the recorder into recording standby state e Adjusting the recording level should be performed on the recorder e See your recorder s manual for more information Start playback on the source component Start playback on the component selected in step 1 Note If you select another input source during recording the newly selected input source will be recorded 13 14 Troubleshooting If you have any trouble using your A 1 VL look for a solution in the troubleshooting section If you can t resolve the issue yourself contact your Onkyo dealer Power Can t turn on the A 1VL e Make sure that the power cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet page 11 e Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet wait five seconds or more then plug the cable in again The power is turned off and the power indicator blinks in white The amp protection circuit has been activated Remove the power cord from the wall outlet immediately and contact your Onkyo dealer Audio There s no sound or it s very soft e When you use the A 1VL as a power amplifier when the DIRECT function is turned on the sound from the component connected to the preamplifier will be output If you want to output the sound from a component connected to the A 1 VL or when you use the A 1 VL as a preamplifier use th
13. ft and right signals will be reversed and the audio will sound unnatural Front Speaker Front Speaker Right Left Caution e Do not connect speakers having impedance values of 4 ohms or lower Do not connect more than one speaker cord to indi vidual speaker terminals Connecting more than one speaker cord may cause failure e Unnecessarily long or very thin speaker cables may affect the sound quality and should be avoided e Be careful not to short the positive and negative wires Doing so may damage the A 1 VL Strip away approx 5 8 inch 15mm 15 mm of insulation from the ends of the speaker cables and CI twist the bare wires tightly as shown Twist the wire ends tightly together ce tog Unscrew the speaker terminal SS AN Gus 1 dl WS G Fully insert the bare wires Screw the terminal tight Changing the Speaker Impedance Value Setting The A 1VL allows you to set the speaker impedance values according to the speakers you use adjusting the optimum frequency characteristics against speaker loads We recommend you set the SPEAKER IMPEDANCE SELECTOR setting to 8 OHMS MIN SPEAKER for speakers having impedance of 8 ohms or higher Likewise you may want to set the setting to 4 OHMS MIN SPEAKER for speakers having impedance of 4 ohms or higher T bud 8 OHMS MIN ST
14. ion e If there is an obstacle between the remote controller and the remote control sensor the remote controller will not operate Connecting the A 1VL Before Making Any Connections e Read the manuals supplied with your components e Don t connect the power cord until you ve completed all audio and video connctions RCA Phono Connection Color Coding RCA Phono connections are usually color coded red and white Use red plugs to connect right channel audio inputs and outputs typically labeled R Use white plugs to connect left channel audio inputs and outputs typically labeled L And use yellow plugs to connect composite video inputs and outputs Analog audio Right red red Left white gt Left white e Push plugs in all the way to make good connections loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions To prevent interference keep audio and video cables away from power cords and speaker cables Connecting Your Speakers Connecting Your Speakers Connect the right channel speaker to the RIGHT speaker connector on the A 1VL and the left channel speaker to the LEFT speaker connecter Connect the connector on each speaker to the connectors on the A 1 VL and connect the connec tor on each speaker to the connectors on the A 1 VL Be sure to connect the positive and negative cables for the speakers properly If they are mixed up the le

17. magnet MM type cartridges Use an analog audio cable RCA phono to connect the A 1VL s PHONO L R inputs to the audio outputs on your turntable as shown Remove the shorting pin plugs before connecting your turntable Ground wire OUTPUT Notes e If your turntable has a ground wire connect it to the GND screw on the A 1 VL With some turntables connecting the ground wire may cause hum in which case it should be disconnected e If your turntable has a moving coil MC type cartridge you ll need a commercially available MC phono preamp Connect the phono preamp to your turntable and then connect the phono preamp to the A 1VL s PHONO L R inputs Connecting the A 1VL Continued Connecting a Power Amplifier You can use the A 1VL as a preamplifier by connecting the A 1VL to a power amplifier When you use the A 1 VL as a preamplifer connect the main in terminals on the power amplifier to the PRE OUT terminals on the A 1 VL LINE IN a Note The signal from the PREOUT terminal will be output whether the DIRECT function is enabled or not Connecting a Preamp You can use the A 1 VL as a power amplifier by connecting the A 1 VL to a preamplifier When you use the A 1 VL as a power amplifier connect the pre out terminals on the preamplifier to the MAIN IN terminals on the A 1VL You can enjoy surround sound playback by connecting front left and right s
18. oisture may con dense on the lens of the optical pickup one of the most important parts inside this unit The unit is moved from a cold place to a warm place A heater is turned on or cold air from an air con ditioner is hitting the unit In the summer when this unit is moved from an air conditioned room to a hot and humid place The unit is used in a humid place e Do not use this unit when there s the possibility of mois ture condensation occurring Doing so may damage cer tain parts inside this unit If condensation does occur leave this unit turned on for two to three hours By that time the unit will have warmed up and any condensation will have evaporated To reduce the risk of condensation keep this unit connected to a wall outlet For British models Replacement and mounting of an AC plug on the power supply cord of this unit should be performed only by qualified service personnel IMPORTANT The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code Blue Neutral Brown Live As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this apparatus may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug proceed as follows The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the ter minal which is marked with the letter N or coloured black The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured red
