A qualified service person must con nect heater to gas supply Follow all local codes N WARNING This appliance requires a 3 8 NPT National Pipe Thread inlet connection to the pres sure regulator CAUTION Never connect heater directly to the Propane supply This heater requires an external regulator not supplied Install the external regulator between the heater and Propane LP supply The installer must supply an external regulator The ex ternal regulator will reduce the incoming gas pressure to between 11 and 14 inches of water If you do not reduce incoming gas pressure heater regulator dam age could occur Install external regulator with the vent pointing down as shown in Figure 12 Pointing the vent down protects it from freezing rain or sleet CAUTION Use only new black iron or steel pipe Internally tinned copper tubing may be used in certain areas Check your local codes Use pipe of larger enough diameter to allow proper gas volume to heater If pipe is too small undue loss of pressure will occur Installation must include an equipment shutoff valve union and plugged 1 8 NPT tap Locate NPT tap within reach of test gauge hookup NPT tap must be up stream from heater see figure 12 a co el Pressure Regulator J 3 8 NPT Pipe Nipple r Heater Cabinet Ground Joint Union Test Gauge Connection Tee Joint Reducer Bushing to 1 8 NPT D I T i Equipment Shutoff Valve F From Gas

Meter TE 4 W C to 10 5 H W C Pressure 1 8 NPT Plug Tap Tee Joint H Pipe Nipple a Cap 3 Minimum Figure 12 A CSA AGA certified equipment shutoff valve with 1 8 NPT tap is an acceptable alternative to test gauge con nection Purchase the CSA AGA certified equipment shutoff valve from your dealer See Accessories page 17 IMPORTANT Install an equipment shutoff valve in an accessible location The equipment shutoff valve is for turning on or shutting off the gas to the appliance Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male threads This will prevent excess sealant from going into pipe Excess sealant in pipe could result in clogged heater fuel train CAUTION Use pipe joint sealant that is resistant to LP Gas Install sediment trap in supply line as shown in figure 12 Locate sediment trap where it is within reach for Unvented LP Gas Fired Buddy Wall Mount Heater G Installation Instructions and Owner s Manual cleaning Asediment trap traps moisture and con taminants This keeps them from going into heater If sediment trap is not installed or is installed improperly heater may not run correctly IMPORTANT Hold pressure regulator with wrench when connecting it to gas piping and or fittings CHECKING GAS CONNECTIONS WARNING Test all gas piping and connections for leaks after installing or servicing Correct all leaks at once N WARNING Never use an open flame to check for a g

SMELL GAS e Do not try to light any appliance e Do not touch any electrical switch do not use any phone in your building e Immediately call you gas supplier from a neigh bor s phone Follow the gas supplier s instruc tions e Ifyou can not reach your gas supplier call the fire department C Use only your hand to push in or turn the gas control knob Never use tools It knob will not push in or turn by hand don t try to repair it call a qualified service technician or gas supplier Force or attempted repair may result in a fire or explosion D Do not use this appliance if any part has been underwater Immediately call a qualified ser vice technician to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the control system which has been underwater LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS 1 STOP Read the all safety information included with and on the side of heater 2 Check that gas supply to heater is on 3 Push in gas control knob and slightly turn clock wise to the OFF position see figure 16 Note Knob cannot be turned from PILOT to OFF unless knob is pushed in slightly Do not force 4 Wait five 5 minutes Then smell for gas in cluding near the floor If you smell gas STOP Follow B in the safety information above If you do not smell gas go to the next step 5 Push in gas control know slightly and turn counterclockwise to PILOT IGN and depress for five 5 seconds Note The first time that the he
5. heater LOCATING HEATER This heater is designed to be mounted on the wall For convenience and efficiency install the heater e Where there is easy access for operation inspection and service e Inthe coldest part of the room CAUTION If you install the heater in a home garage e Heater pilot and burner must be at least 18 inches above floor e Locate heater where moving vehicle will not hit it CAUTION This heater creates warm air currents These currents move heat to wall surfaces next to heater In stalling heater next to vinyl or cloth wall covering or op erating heater where impurities Such as tobacco smoke aromatic candles cleaning fluids oil or kerosene lamps etc are present in the air may discolor walls WARNING Never install the heater In a bathroom In a bedroom In a recreational vehicle Where curtains furniture clothing or other flammable objects are less than 36 inches from the front top or sides of the heater As a fireplace insert In high traffic areas In windy or drafty areas WARNING Heater must be mounted to maintain the minimum clearances shown in Figure 4 If pos sible provide greater clearances from the floor ceil ing and joining walls ij 36 min from 6 Min from ceiling adjoining a lt a ae 2 min to top surface of carpet tile or other combustible material Figure 4 FASTENING HEATER TO WALL Mounting Bra

ONLY PILOT STAYS LIT SEEN Ane UNTENAN E 1 Turn control knob clockwise to the PILOT IGN A WARMING Turn off heater and let cool before parni CAUTION You must keep control areas burner and INSPECTING BURNER circulation air passageways of heater clean Inspect Check pilot flame pattern and burner flame pattern these areas of heater before use Have the heater often inspected yearly by a qualified service person Heater may need more frequent cleaning due to excess lent from carpeting bedding material pet hair etc Unvented LP Gas Fired Buddy Wall Mount Heater Installation Instructions and Owner s Manual Make sure grille guard is in place before running heater If screen or grille guard is removed for servic ing it must be replaced prior to operating the heater WARNING Failure to keep the primary air opening s of the burner s clean may result in soot ing and property damage CLEANING ODS PILOT AND BURNER e Use as vacuum cleaner pressurized air or small soft bristled brush to clean CLEANING BURNER PILOT AIR HOLE INLET We recommend that you clean the unit ever 2 500 hours of operation or every three months We also recommend that you keep the burner tube and pilot as sembly clean and free of dust and dirt To clean these parts we recommend using compressed air no greater than 30 psig This can be done by using a vacuum cleaner in the blow position using compressed air in a can please follow the directions on th
11. able ma terial on or near the appliance Never place any objects on the heater Due to high temperatures heater should be kept out of traffic and away from furniture and draperies Surface of heater becomes very hot when run ning Keep children and adults away from hot surfaces to avoid burns or clothing ignition Heater will remain hot for a time after shut down Allow heater surfaces to cool before handling Young children should be carefully supervised when they are in the same room with heater Make sure grille guard is in place before running heater If screen or grille guard is removed for servicing it must be replaced prio to operating the heater Keep the appliance area clear and free from combustible materials gasoline and other flammable vapors and liquids AN Every time hose or tank is connected to unit connection must be checked for leaks in one or more ways Apply soapy water to connection look for bubbles listen for hiss of escaping gas feel for extreme cold smell for rotten egg odor Do not use if leaking PRECAUTIONS WARNING 1 This heater may be installed in a bedroom but not a bathroom or any place where a strong wind would shut down the appliance 2 This heater needs outside ventilation air to run properly The Oxygen Depletion Sensor ODS safety shutoff system shuts down the heater if not enough fresh air is available See Fresh Air for Com bustion and Ventilation page 3 3 K
12. as leak Apply a mixture of liquid soap and water to all joints Bubbles forming show a leak Correct all leaks at once PRESSURE TESTING GAS SUPPLY PIPING SYSTEM Test pressure in Excess of 2 psig 3 5kPa 1 Disconnect appliance with its appliance main gas valve control valve and equipment shutoff valve from gas supply piping system Pres sures in excess of psig will damage heater regulator 2 Cap off open end of gas pipe where equipment shutoff valve was connected 3 Pressurize supply piping system by either using compressed air or opening main gas valve on or near gas meter 4 Check all connections and joints in gas supply piping system Apply mixture of liquid soap and water to gas joints Bubbles forming show a leak 5 Correct all leaks at once 6 Depressurize and relieve pressure in supply piping system 7 Reconnect heater and equipment shutoff valve to gas supply 8 Reconnected fittings must be checked for leaks in next section Test Pressure Equal To or Less Than 2 psig 3 5 kPa 1 Close equipment shutoff valve see figure 13 2 Pressurize supply piping system by either using compressed air or opening propane LP supply valve 3 Check all joints from the propane LP supply valve to equipment shutoff valve see figure 14 Apply mixture of liquid soap and water to gas joints Bubbles forming show a leak 4 Correct all leaks at once 5 Depressurize and relieve pressure from supply p
13. ater is operated after connecting the gas supply the control knob should be depressed for about 30 seconds This will allow air to bleed from the gas system 6 Push in control knob and rotate control knob back to OFF position then rotate counterclock wise to PILOT IGN position This will light pilot If needed gently keep rotating control knob back and forth while depressed until pilot lights 7 Keep control knob depressed in for ten 10 seconds after lighting pilot If pilot goes out repeat steps 4 5 6 and 7 e f pilot does not stay lit refer to Troubleshoot ing pages 14 amp 15 Also contact a qualified service person or gas supplier for repairs e If control knob does not pop up when released contact a qualified service person or gas sup plier for repairs e When the pilot is lit turn the control knob to HI position to light heater e After flame is established see Burner Flame Pattern Pages 12 and 13 on HI adjust heat output by turning control knob to desired position LO or HI Do not operate heater between locked positions Unvented LP Gas Fired Buddy Wall Mount Heater 9 Installation Instructions and Owner s Manual PILOT FLAME PATTERN Figure 21 show a correct pilot flame pattern Figure 22 shows an incorrect pilot flame pattern The incorrect pilot flame pattern is not touching thermocouple This will cause the thermocouple to cool When the thermo couple cools the h

17. doorless passageways or ventilation grills be tween them DETERMINING THE TYPE OF HEATER LOCATION SPACE Use this method to determine if you have a confined or unconfined space Note the space includes the room in which you Installation Instructions and Owner s Manual install heater plus any adjoining rooms with door less passageways or ventilation grills between the rooms 1 Find the volume of the space by multiplying room length x width x height Example Space size 18ft length x 18ft width x 8ft height 2592 If additional ventilation to adjoining room is supplied with grills or openings add the volume of these rooms to the total volume of the space 2 Divide the space volume by 50 cubic feet to deter mine the maximum Btu hr the space can support Example 2592 cu ft volume of space 50 cu ft 51 8 or 51 800 maximum Btu hr the space can support AN WARNING If the area in which the heater may be operated is smaller than defined as an unconfined space or if the building is of unusually tight con struction provide adequate combustion and ventila tion air by the methods described in the National Fuel Gas Code NFPA 54 ANSI 2223 1 Section 5 3 or applicable local codes 3 Add the Btu hr of all the fuel burning appliances in the space such as Vent free heater Gas water heater Gas furnace Vented gas heater Gas fire place logs and Other gas appliances Do not include direct vent gas applian
