6. set of Product Recovery CDs The set of Product Recovery CDs will enable you to restore the contents of the hard disk to the same state as when your computer was originally shipped from the factory For more information on recovering factory installed software refer to Recovering software in your User Guide To replace the hard disk drive do the following 1 Open the computer cover See Opening the cover on page 5 2 Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system board O 3 If an optical drive is installed disconnect the signal cable from the drive to access the hard disk drive cables 4 Disconnect the signal and power cables from the rear of the hard disk drive 20 Hardware Replacement Guide 5 Pivot the hard disk drive and bracket to the rear then pull the drive and bracket out of the drive bay by pulling on the blue handle 9 6 Remove the failing hard disk drive from the bracket by flexing the bracket Chapter 2 Replacing hardware 21 7 Install the new drive into the blue bracket flex the bracket and align the pins through W on the bracket with the holes in the hard disk drive Do not touch the circuit board J on the bottom of the hard disk drive 8 Install the hard disk drive and bracket into the drive bay 9 Pivot the drive and bracket towards the front of the computer and snap it into position 10 Connect the signal and powe

10. ainer H until it is fully open Chapter 2 Replacing hardware 11 12 Lift the microprocessor straight up and out of the socket Important Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the microprocessor When handling the microprocessor touch only the sides a Note the orientation of the notches on the microprocessor This is important when installing the microprocessor on the new system board b Do not drop anything on the socket while it is open Keep all contacts as clean as possible 13 On the new system board release the lever securing the microprocessor retainer and then pivot the retainer until it is fully open 14 Position the microprocessor so that the notches on the microprocessor are aligned with the tabs in the microprocessor socket on the new system board Important To avoid damaging the microprocessor do not tilt the microprocessor when installing it into the microprocessor socket 12 Hardware Replacement Guide 15 Lower the microprocessor straight down into the microprocessor socket 16 Lower the microprocessor retainer J and then lower the lever to secure the retainer Make sure the lever is securely lock
11. arranty Guide that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual HMM for the computer To obtain copies of the Safety and Warranty Guide or the HMM go to the Support Web site at http www lenovo com support To replace the power supply assembly do the following 1 Remove the four screws at the rear of the chassis that secure the power supply 2 Open the computer cover See the Opening the cover on page 5 3 Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system board O 4 Locate the power supply assembly See Locating components on page 1 6 Hardware Replacement Guide 5 Disconnect the power supply cables J and H from the system board connectors and from all drives Q 2 oo 6 Remove the power supply cables from the cable clips and ties 7 Slide the power supply assembly forward and remove it from the computer 9 8 Install the new power supply assembly into the chassis so that the screw holes in the power supply assembly align with those in the chassis Note Use only the screws provided by Lenovo 9 Install and tighten the four screws at the rear of the chassis to secure the power supply assem

13. e computer cover 5 Ifa cover lock is installed lock the cover 6 Reconnect the external cables and power cords to the computer See connectors on the rear of your computer on page 3 7 If you are replacing the system board or microprocessor you must update flash the BIOS See Updating flashing BIOS from a diskette or CD ROM 8 To update your configuration see Using the Setup Utility program in the User Guide Note In most areas of the world Lenovo requires the return of the defective CRU Information about this will come with the CRU or will come a few days after the CRU arrives Updating flashing BIOS from a diskette or CD ROM m Important Start the Setup Utility program to view your system information See Using the Setup Utility program in your User Guide or the Hardware Maintenance Manual If the serial number and the machine type model listed on the Main menu do not match what is printed on the label of your computer you must update flash the BIOS to change the serial number and the machine type model Chapter 2 Replacing hardware 35 To update flash the BIOS from a diskette or CD ROM do the following 1 Insert a system program update flash diskette or CD into the diskette drive or optical drive System program updates are available at http www lenovo com support on the World Wide Web Note If you are inserting a CD ROM into the optical drive make sure that the co

16. ed into position DO QO Note There will be a black plastic cover on the microprocessor retainer to protect the socket on the new system board When you lock the microprocessor in position remove the black plastic cover Place the black plastic cover on the microprocessor retainer of the failing system board 17 Place the heat sink into position and lower the lever to secure the heat sink 18 To install the new system board into the chassis tilt the front end of the system board between the diskette drive and the fan assembly and position it so that the slots in the new system board are aligned with the pins on the chassis Chapter 2 Replacing hardware 13 19 Slide the system board toward the rear of the computer until the front latch snaps into position 20 Reconnect the cables that were disconnected from the system board Make sure all cables are routed correctly See Identifying parts on the system 21 Reinstall the PCI riser assembly and adapters 22 Go to Completing the parts replacement on page 34 Replacing the microprocessor Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading the Important safety information in

20. lug all power cords from electrical outlets 3 Locate the connector for the mouse See Locating controls and connectors on the front of your computer on page 2 and Locating connectors on the rear of your computer on page 3 lt gt 3 eee 4 Disconnect the failing mouse cable from the computer 5 Connect the new mouse cable to one of the USB connectors 6 Go to Completing the parts replacement Completing the parts replacement After replacing the parts you need to close the cover and reconnect cables including telephone lines and power cords Also depending on the part that was replaced you might need to confirm the updated information in the Setup Utility program See Using the Setup Utility program in your User Guide To complete the part installation 1 Ensure that all components have been reassembled correctly and that no tools or loose screws are left inside your computer See for the location of various components 34 Hardware Replacement Guide 2 Make sure that the cables are routed correctly before lowering the drive bay assembly Important Correctly route all power supply cables to avoid interference with the drive bay assembly Keep cables clear of the hinges and sides of the computer chassis 3 Lower the drive bay assembly and position the drive locks to the locked position Otherwise you cannot close the computer cover 4 Close th
21. me way after you install the new system board Chapter 2 Replacing hardware 9 7 Pull upward on the handle f to release the system board from the front latch slide the system board toward the drive bay assembly and then carefully lift the system board out of the chassis Note You might have to tilt the front end of the system board between the diskette drive and the fan assembly to remove it completely from the chassis 8 Place the failing system board next to the new system board on a clean flat surface 9 Remove all memory modules from the failing system board and install them in the same connectors on the new system board See Replacing a memory module on page 25 Return here after installing the memory modules on the new system board 10 Hardware Replacement Guide 10 Remove the heat sink from the failing system board by pivoting the lever securing the heat sink until it is fully in the up position Carefully lift the heat sink off of the failing system board Note Place the heat sink on its side on a clean flat surface so the thermal grease on the bottom of the heat sink does not touch the surface and become contaminated QO 11 To remove the microprocessor from the failing system board release the lever securing the microprocessor then pivot the microprocessor ret

26. ter you might need a flat blade or Phillips screwdriver Additional tools might be needed for certain parts Handling static sensitive devices vi Static electricity although harmless to you can seriously damage computer components and parts When you are replacing a part do not open the static protective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the computer and you are ready to install the new part When you handle parts and other computer components take these precautions to avoid static electricity damage e Limit your movement Movement can cause static electricity to build up around you e Always handle parts and other computer components carefully Handle adapters memory modules system boards and microprocessors by the edges Never touch any exposed circuitry e Prevent others from touching the parts and other computer components e Before you replace a new part touch the static protective package containing the part to a metal expansion slot cover or other unpainted metal surface on the computer for at least two seconds This reduces static electricity in the package and your body e When possible remove the new part from the static protective packaging and install it directly in the computer without setting the part down When this is not possible place the static protective package that the part came in on a smooth level surface and place the part on it e Do not place
