1. Connecting to a wireless network NOTE Internethardware and software features vary depending on computer model and your location Your computer may support one or both of the following types of Internet access e Wireless For mobile Internet access you can use a wireless connection Refer to Connecting to an existing WLAN on page 17 or Setting up a new WLAN network on page 17 e Wired You can access the Internet by connecting to a wired network For information on connecting to a wired network refer to the HP Notebook Reference Guide 15 Using an Internet service provider ISP Before you can connect to the Internet you must establish an ISP account Contact a local ISP to purchase Internet service and a modem The ISP will help set up the modem install a network cable to connect your wireless computer to the modem and test the Internet service 999 E NOTE Your ISP will give you a user ID and password to access the Internet Record this information and store it in a safe place The following features will help you set up a new Internet account or configure the computer to use an existing account Internet Services amp Offers available in some locations This utility assists with signing up for a new Internet account and configuring the computer to use an existing account To access this utility select Start gt All Programs gt Online Services gt Get Online ISP provided icons a
2. 1 in order to release the cover 2 Gently press the hinged bottom of the rubber tail and pull the RJ 45 cover off of the computer 2 To install the RJ 45 cover 1 Gently press the end of the rubber tail and insert the RJ 45 cover into the computer 1 2 Push on the edge of the RJ 45 cover until it snaps into place 2 38 Chapter6 Maintenance Updating programs and drivers HP recommends that you update your programs and drivers on a regular basis with the latest versions Go to http www hp com support to download the latest versions You can also register to receive automatic update notifications when they become available Routine care Cleaning the display A CAUTION To prevent permanent damage to the computer never spray water cleaning fluids or chemicals on the display To remove smudges and lint frequently clean the display with a soft damp lint free cloth If the screen requires additional cleaning use premoistened antistatic wipes or an antistatic screen cleaner Cleaning the TouchPad and keyboard Dirt and grease on the TouchPad can cause the pointer to jump around on the screen To avoid this clean the TouchPad with a damp cloth and wash your hands frequently when using the computer A WARNING To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to internal components do not use a vacuum cleaner attachment to clean the keyboard A vacuum cleaner can deposit household debris on the keyboard

10. ation when adding a second memory module be sure that both memory modules are identical To add or replace a memory module CAUTION To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system Shut down the computer before adding or replacing memory modules Do not remove a memory module while the computer is on in the Sleep state or in Hibernation If you are not sure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation turn the computer on by pressing the power button Then shut down the computer through the operating system 1 Save your work and shut down the computer 2 Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer 3 Unplug the power cord from the AC outlet 4 Turn the computer upside down on a flat surface and remove the battery 5 Lift up at the two indentations 1 to remove the service cover 2 34 Chapter6 Maintenance 6 Lift up the regulatory label to access the memory modules 7 Ifyou are replacing a memory module remove the existing memory module a Pull away the retention clips 1 on each side of the memory module The memory module tilts up b Grasp the edge of the memory module 2 and then gently pull the memory module out of the memory module slot A CAUTION To prevent damage to the memory module hold the memory module by the edges only Do not touch the components on the memory module To protect a memory module after removal place it in an electrostatic safe contain

12. d be used as a final attempt to correct computer issues Note the following when performing a system restore e You can restore only the system that you have previously backed up HP recommends that you use Recovery Manager to create either a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive as soon as you set up the computer e Windows has its own built in repair features such as System Restore If you have not already tried these features try them before using HP Recovery Manager e HP Recovery Manager restores only software that was preinstalled at the factory Software not provided with this computer must be downloaded from the manufacturer s Web site or reinstalled from the disc provided by the manufacturer Restoring using the dedicated recovery partition select models only When using the dedicated recovery partition there is an option to back up pictures music and other audio videos and movies recorded TV shows documents spreadsheets and presentations e mails Internet favorites and settings during this process To restore the computer from the recovery partition follow these steps 1 Access HP Recovery Manager in either of the following ways e Select Start gt All Programs gt HP gt HP Recovery Manager gt HP Recovery Manager e Turnonor restart the computer and then press esc while the Press the ESC key for Startup Menu message is displayed at the bottom of the screen Then press f11 while the F11 Sy

14. er 8 Insert a new memory module Adding or replacing memory modules 35 A CAUTION To prevent damage to the memory module hold the memory module by the edges only Do not touch the components on the memory module a Align the notched edge 1 of the memory module with the tab in the memory module slot b With the memory module at a 45 degree angle from the surface of the memory module compartment press the module 2 into the memory module slot until it is seated c Gently press the memory module 3 down applying pressure to both the left and right edges of the memory module until the retention clips snap into place A CAUTION To prevent damage to the memory module be sure that you do not bend the memory module Pan 9 Lower the regulatory label to cover the memory modules 10 Reinstall the service cover by inserting the cover at an angle 1 11 Align the snap locations on the service cover 36 Chapter6 Maintenance 12 Close the service cover 2 13 Push down on the right center left of the service cover until all hooks snap into place 14 Replace the battery 15 Turn the computer right side up and then reconnect external power and external devices 16 Turn on the computer Adding or replacing memory modules 37 Removing or installing the RJ45 cover To remove the RJ 45 cover 1 Slide the RJ 45 cover to the right grasping the cover at the indentation on the left side
