4. m Link Test a physical layer test that sends IEEE 802 2 test packets to any device identified by its MAC address m Ping Test a network layer test used on IP networks that sends test packets to any device identified by its IP address These tests can be performed through the switch console interface from a terminal connected to the switch or through a Telnet connection or from the switch s web browser interface For more information see the Management and Configuration Guide whichis onthe Documentation CD ROM that came with your switch These tests can also be performed from an SNMP network management station running a program that can manage the switch for example ProCurve Manager Testing End to End Network Communications Both the switch and the cabling can be tested by running an end to end communications test a test that sends known data from one network device to another through the switch For example if you have two PCs on the network that have LAN adapters between which you can run a link level test or Ping test through the switch you can use this test to verify that the entire communication path between the two PCs is functioning correctly See your LAN adapter documentation for more information on running a link test or Ping test 4 8 Note Troubleshooting Restoring the Factory Default Configuration Restoring the Factory Default Configuration As part of your troubleshooting process on the switch

Before installing the switch plan its location and orientation relative to other devices and equipment In the front of the switch leave at least 7 6 cm 8 inches of space for the twisted pair and fiber optic cabling In the back of the switch leave at least 10 16 cm 4 inches of space for the cl module cabling On the sides of the switch leave at least 7 6 cm 3 inches for cooling except if the switch is installed in an open EIA TIA rack 2 6 Caution Installing the Switch Installation Procedures 2 Optional Install or Remove a cl Module It is recommended the power to the switch be removed before inserting or extracting the expansion module If the expansion module is inserted or removed with the switch powered on a reset will occur Only install or remove these modules during scheduled downtime 1 Remove the cover plate Align the edges of the board with guides Extractor Handles 2 Insert the module aligning with the guides in the slot 3 Once the contacts have engaged use the extractor handles to seat the module completely 4 Tighten the captive screws Refer to the ProCurve Switch cl Modules Installation Guide for more details If you have installed a media flex module you can now install a transceiver See the following step 2 7 youms eu Dugem Installing the Switch Installing the Switch Installation Procedures WARNING Note 3 Optional Install or Remove a Tran

20. of the self test For the duration of the self test the Test LED stays on 2 10 WARNING Equipment Cabinet Note Installing the Switch Installation Procedures When the self test completes successfully e The Power and Fan Status LEDs remain on e The Fault and Test LEDs go off e The port LEDs includes the expansion module LEDs go into their normal operational mode Ifthe ports are connected to active network devices the LEDs behave according to their function Link or Activity Iftheports are not connected to active network devices the LEDs will stay off If the LED display is different than what is described above especially if the Fault and Test LEDs stay on for more than 60 seconds or they start blinking the self test has not completed correctly Refer to chapter 4 Troubleshooting for diagnostic help 9 Afterthe self test has completed successfully disconnect the power cord in preparation for mounting the switch 5 Mount the Switch After the switch passes self test you are ready to mount the switch in a stable location The Series 6400cl Switch devices can be mounted in these ways m inarack or cabinet m ona horizontal surface Rack or Cabinet Mounting The Series 6400cl Switch devices are designed to be mounted in any EIA standard 19 inch telco rack or communication equipment cabinet For safe operation please read the installation precautions on page 2 4 before mounting a switch
