2. 9 test tone appears The test tone will automatically switch to the next chan nel after three seconds See page 16 for more information on using the test tone to set the output levels PR Surround Off Press this button to turn off all surround processing and to listen to a program in tradi tional stereo from the left front and right front speakers only PE Mute Press this button to momentarily silence the speaker output of the AVR5 PA Volume Control Turn the knob clockwise to increase volume counterclockwise to decrease the volume PA Set Button This button has two functions If this button is pressed while in normal operation the Information Display KM will show the Surround mode for three seconds This button is also used to enter an output level setting when using the Test Tone and Selector Buttons i See pages 15 17 for more information on setting output levels Ba Delay Press this button to enter delay time settings See page 17 for more information on delay times Channel Select Press this button during normal operation or during the Test Tone operation to begin the process that adjusts the output levels NOTE Be sure to select the Dolby Pro Logic surround mode before cal ibration so that all five channels will be adjusted See page 16 for more information on setting output levels E Center Speaker Select Button Press this button to select the center channel speaker When i

Important Safety Information Verify Line Voltage Before Use Your AVR5 has been designed for use with 120 volt AC current Connection to a line voltage other than that for which it is intended can create a safety and fire haz ard and may damage the unit Ifyou have any guestions about the volt age reguirements for your specific model or about the line voltage in your area contact your selling dealer before plug ging the unit into a wall outlet Do Not Use Extension Cords To avoid safety hazards use only the power cord attached to your unit We do not recommend that extension cords be used with this product As with all electri cal devices do not run power cords under rugs or carpets or place heavy objects on them Damaged power cords should be replaced immediately with cords meeting factory specifications Handle the AC Power Cord Gently When disconnecting the power cord from an AC outlet always pull the plug never pull the cord If you do not intend to use the unit for any considerable length of time disconnect the plug from the AC outlet Do Not Open the Cabinet There are no user serviceable compo nents inside this product Opening the cabinet may present a shock hazard and any modification to the product will void your guarantee If water or any metal object such as a paper clip wire or staple accidentally falls inside the unit disconnect it from the AC power source immediately and consult an authorized
4. consult an authorized Harman Kardon service depot The AVR5 is equipped with a powerful remote control that will control not only the receiver s functions but many popu lar brands of video equipment including TVsets VCRs and DVD players Once the AVRS s remote is programmed with the codes for the products you own it is pos sible to eliminate most other remotes and replace them with the convenience of a single universal remote control Programming the Remote Direct Code Entry This method is the easiest way to program your remote to work with different products 1 Use the tables in the following pages to determine the three digit code or codes that match both the product type e g VCR TV but also the specific brand name If there is more than one number for a brand make note of the different choices 2 Tum on the component you wish to program into the AVR5 remote 3 Press and hold both the Device Control Selector for the type of product to be entered e g VCR TV and the Mute button at the same time Hold both buttons until the LED Indicator lights to a red color Note that the next step must take place while the red light is on and it must begin within 20 seconds after the light illuminates 4 Point the AVR5 s remote towards the unit to be programmed and enter the first three digit code number using the Programming the Remote 26 Numeric buttons py If the unit turns off the correct

6. iB Preset Scan f Preset Stations Selector FM Mode KE Dolby Pro Logic Selector KE Dolby 3 Stereo Selector E Analog Surround Mode Selectors El Test Tone PA Surround Off Hh A wl EZ Mute EX Volume Control EA Set Button B Delay Channel Select E Center Speaker Select Button E Selector Buttons BY Information Display Remote Sensor Window El Main Power Switch Press this button to apply power to the AVR5 When the switch is pressed in the unit is placed in a Standby mode as indicated by the amber LED E surrounding the System Power Control Pl This button MUST be pressed in to operate the unit To turn the unit off and prevent the use of the remote control this switch should be pressed until it pops out from the front panel so that the word OFF may be read at the top of the switch NOTE In normal operation this switch is left in the ON position EJ System Power Control When the Main Power Switch Eli is ON press this button to turn on the AVR5 press it again to turn the unit off Note that the Power Indicator surrounding the switch E will turn green when the unit is on E Power Indicator This LED will illuminate in amber when the unit is in the Standby mode to signal that the unit is ready to be turned on When the unit is in operation the indicator will turn green A red indi cator means that the unit is in the Protect mode and should be turned off and then checked for a possible
7. itis actually placing the system in a standby mode as indicated by the amber color of the Power Indicator EJ When you will be away from home for an extended period of time it is always a good idea to completely turn the unit off using the front panel Main Power Switch El Operation 21 To dim the brightness of the front panel display press the Dimmer button on the remote The first press will dim the lights to half normal A second press will tum the display completely off Press the Dimmer button 4 again to restore the display to normal brightness Source Selection To select a source at any time press any of the Source Selector buttons on the remote or front panel iH E The front panel Video 3 Inputs Ti may be used to connect a device such as a video game or camcorder to your home entertainment system on a temporary basis When an audio source is selected the last video input used remains routed to the Video Outputs 1 and TV Monitor Output This permits simultaneous viewing and listening to different sources Duringa listening session you may wish to adjust the Bass EA and Treble El controls to suit your listening tastes Adjust the volume to a comfortable level using the front panel Volume Control FZ or remote Master Volume Up Down buttons To temporarily silence all speaker outputs press the Mute button ER This will cut the output to all speakers but it will not eff
8. service station Safety Information 5 CATV or Antenna Grounding Ifan outside antenna or cable system is connected to this product be certain that itis grounded so as to provide some pro tection against voltage surges and static charges Section 810 of the National Electrical Code ANSI NEFPA No 70 1984 provides information with respect to proper grounding of the mast and sup porting structure grounding of the lead in wire to an antenna discharge unit size of grounding conductors location of antenna discharge unit connection to grounding electrodes and requirements of the grounding electrode NOTE TO CATV SYSTEM INSTALLER This reminder is provided to call the CATV Cable TV system installer s atten tion to article 820 40 of the NEC that provides guidelines for proper grounding and in particular specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the ground ing system of the building as close to the point of cable entry as possible A CAUTION RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK DO NOT OPEN Installation Location m To assure proper operation and to avoid the potential for safety hazards place the unit on a firm and level sur face When placing the unit on a shelf be certain that the shelf and any mounting hardware can support the weight of the product m Make certain that proper space is pro vided both above and below the unit for ventilation If this product will be installed in a cabinet or other enclosed
9. the AVR5 Installation and Connections NOTE While most speaker manufacturers adhere to an industry convention of using black terminals for negative and red ones for positive some manufacturers may vary from this configuration To assure proper phase and optimal performance consult the identification plate on your speaker or the speaker s manual to verify polarity If you do not know the polarity of your speaker ask your dealer for advice before proceeding or consult the speaker s manufacturer 6 Connections to a subwoofer are made via a line level audio connection from the Subwoofer Output to the line level input of a subwoofer with a built in amplifier Ifa passive subwoofer is used the connection first goes to a power amplifier which will be connected to one or more subwoofer speakers Video Equipment Connections Video equipment is connected in a fashion similar to audio components Again the use of high quality interconnect cables is recommended to preserve signal quality 1 Connect a VCR s audio and video Play Out jacks to the Video 1 In jacks on the rear panel The audio and Record Out jacks on the VCR should be connected to the Video 1 Out jacks on the ARS 2 Connect the audio and video outputs of a satellite receiver cable TV converter or television set or any other video source to the Video 2 In jacks 6 3 Connect the audio and video outputs of a DVD or laser disc player to the DVD jack

Connect the analog output of a CD player to the CD inputs NOTE When the CD player has both fixed and variable audio outputs it is best to use the fixed output unless you find that the input to the receiver is so low that the sound is noisy or high that the signal is distorted 2 Connect the Play Out jacks of a cas sette deck MD or other audio recorder to the Tape Monitor In jacks Connect the Record In jacks on the recorder to the Tape Monitor Out jacks on the AVR5 15 3 Assemble the AM Loop Antenna sup plied with the unit as shown below Connect it to the AM and GND screw terminals 4 Connect an FM antenna to the FM 75 ohm connection The FM antenna may bean external roof antenna an inside powered or wire lead antenna or a connection from a cable TV system Note that if the antenna or connection uses 300 ohm twin lead cable you must use the 300 ohm to 75 ohm adapter supplied with the unit to make the connection 5 Connect the front center and surround speaker outputs to the respective speakers To assure that all the audio signals are carried to your speakers without loss of clarity or resolution we suggest that you use high quality speaker cable Many brands of cable are available and the choice of cable may be influenced by the distance between your speakers and this receiver the type of speakers you use personal preferences and other factors Your dealer or instal

Power On When the AVR5 is in the Standby mode as indicated by the Power Indicator EJ glowing green press this button to turn the AVR5 on Device Control Selectors Press one of these buttons to use the remote to control the functions of another audio video device Note that the button will briefly turn red after it has been pressed to confirm your selection See pages 23 25 for information on programming the AVR5 s remote to operate these devices Remote Control Functions 13 AVR Selector Press this button to use the remote control for operation of the AVR5 Note that the button will briefly turn red after it has been pressed to confirm your selection Source Selectors Press these buttons to select an input source for the AVR5 The AM FM button is also used to switch between freguency bands when the tuner is in use NOTE Pressing one of these buttons selects the source only In order to control the actual source machine using the remote you must press the Device Control Selector button for the desired product 6 Channel Direct Press this but ton to use the output of an optional external digital decoder as the AVR5 s input source Disc Skip These buttons do not have any functions when controlling the AVR5 but they operate the Disc Skip functions of compatible Harman Kardon compact disc changers The Disc Skip Up button will also function as the Open Close button for certain DVD and LD
13. eguipment when the remote is properly programmed to control them Sleep Button Press this button to place the unit in the Sleep mode After the time shown in the display the AVR5 will automatically go into the Standby mode Each press of the button changes the time until turn off in the following order 90 80 70 60 50 min min min min min 40 5 30 20 _ 10 OFF min min min min Dimmer Press this button once to reduce the brightness of the front panel display to half the normal intensity Press it again to turn the front panel display completely off When the display is completely off press the button to return to normal brightness Surround Channel Selectors Press these buttons to check or change the current Surround mode When either one of these two buttons is first pressed the Information Display fi will show the current Surround mode Press either button again to change the current Surround mode by scrolling the list of available modes as they appear in the Information Display Ef When the remote is being used to control a VCR or TV set these but tons are used to change channels These buttons are also used when the remote is being programmed to find the correct codes via the Search mode See page 23 for more information on programming the remote Clear Button This button is used to clear preset memory information for the AVR5 s tuner See pages 21 22 for mo
14. indicator lights 2 Press the Center button PF on the front panel or the Center button on the remote 3 Press the Center button ZE on the front panel or the Center button on the remote until the desired center channel speaker type appears in the Information Display ETi using the definitions for Large and Small that appear above If no center channel speaker is installed press the button until the display reads NONE as shown in the Information Display NOTE The AVR5 s subwoofer output is always active regardless of the center channel configuration setting Output Level Adjustment Output level adjustment is a key part of the configuration process for any sur round sound product It is particularly important for a digital ready receiver such as the AVR5 as correct outputs will ensure that you hear sound tracks in their proper place with the proper intensity IMPORTANT NOTE Many listeners are often confused about the operation ofthe surround channels While some assume that sound should always be coming from each speaker most of the time there will be little or no sound in the surround channels This is because they are only used when a movie director or sound mixer specifically places sound there to create ambiance an effect or to continue action from the front of the room to the rear When the output levels are properly set it is normal for rear surround speakers to operate only occasionally Artifi
15. rare case where the unit s opera tion or the displays seem abnormal the cause may involve the erratic operation of the system s memory or microprocessor To correct this problem first unplug the unit from the AC wall outlet and wait at least three minutes After the pause reconnect the AC power cord and check the unit s operation If the system still malfunctions a system reset may clear the problem If the system still does not respond it may be necessary to perform a complete reset To reset the system first turn the AVR5 off by pressing the Main Power Switch E and then releasing it so that it extends out beyond the front panel and the word OFF is visible in red lettering at the top of the switch Next press and hold the T Mon and CD Input Selector buttons EE on the front panel ONLY While holding these buttons in press the Main Power Switch Ein until it latches so that the button is flush with the front panel The Information Display will briefly show the word RESET and then return to normal operation Note that when the system is reset in this fashion all tuner presets and other con figuration information such as center channel speaker type and output levels will be lost and must be re entered Ifthe system is still operating incorrectly there may have been an electronic discharge or severe AC line interference that has corrupted the memory or microprocessor If these steps do not solve the problem
16. speaker wire short circuit E Headphone Jack This jack may be used to listen to the AVR5 s out put through a pair of headphones Be certain that the headphones have a standard 4 stereo phone plug Front Panel Controls 8 Bass Control Turn this control to modify the low frequency output of the left right channels by as much as 10dB Set this control to a suitable position for your taste and room acoustics E Speakers ON Button This button turns the speakers on for normal listening 3 Speakers OFF Button This but ton turns the speakers off for private listening when the headphones are in use EJ Treble Control Turn this control to modify the high freguency output of the left right channels by as much as 10dB Set this control to a suitable position for your taste and room acoustics E Balance Control Turn this control to change the relative volume for the front left right channels NOTE For proper operation of the surround modes this control should be at the midpoint or 12 o clock position I Video 3 Inputs These audio video inputs may be used for temporary connection of video games camcorders digital still cameras or portable audio products To select a source connected to these jacks press the Vid 3 Input Selector fi Input Selectors Press one of these buttons to select or change the input source If the unit is in the Standby mode pressing one of these buttons will als
17. stop when all 30 preset memory spaces have been filled or when three scans through the band have been completed Center Use this button to config ure the AVR5 for the type of center channel speaker being used See page 15 for more information d Secondary Control Cover This sliding cover normally is in the up position so that it hides the sec ondary controls To access these controls place your thumb on the small recessed area at the top cen ter of the control and gently press the cover down and towards you LNA lt gt Buttons These buttons are used to change settings during the level output adjustments with either the test tone or an external audio source See page 16 for information on output level adjust ment with the test tone or page 22 for level trim adjustment with an external source Set Button This button has two functions If this button is pressed while in normal operation the Information Display KM will show the Surround mode for three seconds This button is also used to enter an output level setting when using the Test Tone and Selector buttons EX PE See pages 15 17 for more information on setting output levels Channel Button Use this button to adjust the AVR5 s output levels using an external audio source rather than the internal test signal generator Each press of the button will select a channel for adjustment To trim the output level use the lt P gt buttons EY
18. the Pro Logic mode using the Pro Logic Selector IE on the front panel or the Surround Channel buttons 8 on the remote Next set the reference volume for the front left right channels using the Volume Control EZ If you wish to vary the difference between the left and right channels use the Balance Control E Operation 25 Once the reference level has been set press the Channel Select button and note that F LT O will appear in the Information Display Eri To change the level first press the Set but ton P EA within five seconds and then use the Selector buttons BE or the lt gt buttons EWY to raise or lower the level DO NOT use the volume control as this will alter the reference setting Once the change has been made press the Set button PE IS and then press the Channel Select button to select the next output channel location that you wish to adjust To adjust the sub woofer level press the Channel Select button until SUBW appears in the Information Display ET Repeat the procedure as needed until all channels requiring adjustment have been set When all adjustments have been made the AVR5 will return to nor mal operation when no adjustments are made for five seconds Memory Backup This product is equipped with a memory backup system that preserves tuner pre sets and system configuration informa tion if the unit is accidentally unplugged or subject to a power outage Processor Reset In the

D Indicator will briefly flash in red to indicate that you have changed the device being controlled When operating a device other than the AVR the controls may not correspond exactly to the function printed on the remote or button Some commands such as the volume control are the same as with the AVR5 Other buttons will change their function so that they correspond to a secondary label on the remote For example the Surround Mode selector buttons also function as the Channel Up and Channel Down buttons when operat ing most TVsets or VCRs The Channel Up Down indication is printed directly on the remote The same is true for standard VCR and DVD functions which follow the standard function icons printed on top of the buttons For some products however the function of a particular button does not follow the command printed on the remote In order to see which function a button con trols consult the Function List tables printed in this manual To use those tables first check the type of device being controlled e g TV VCR Next look at the remote control diagram pictured on the following page Note that each button has a number on it O BOOOOOGOO Ue FE Ge AVR 5 RC harman kardon To find out what function a particular button has for a specific device find the button number on the Function List and then look in the column for the device you are con

34. cially increasing the volume to the rear speakers may destroy theillusion of an enveloping sound field that duplicates the way you hear sound in a movie theater or concert hall Before beginning the adjustment process make certain that all speaker connections have been properly made The system volume should be set to the level that you will use during a typical listening session Finally make certain that the Balance Control E is set to the center 12 o clock position To adjust and calibrate the output levels follow these steps For accurate calibration itis a good idea to make these adjustments from the location in your room that is your favorite listening position System Configuration 19 1 Put the AVRO in the Dolby Pro Logic mode by pressing the Dolby Pro Logic Selector KE on the front panel or by pressing the Surround Mode Selector on the remote until PRO LOGIC appearsin the Information Display EI and the PRO LOGIC indicatorlights 2 Press the Test Tone button Pp on the remote or front panel The word TEST will appear in the Information Display Ei and the letters FL will flash once each second 3 At this point the test noise will begin to circulate among all the speakers in a clockwise rotation NOTE This is a good time to verify that the speakers have been properly connected As the test noise circulates listen to make certain that the sound comes from the speaker position shown in the Ma

51. ound reproduced No matter which type or brand of speakers isused the same model or brand of speaker should be used for the front left center and right speakers This creates a seamless front soundstage and elimi nates the possibility of distracting sonic disturbances that occur when a sound moves across mismatched front channel speakers Speaker Placement Depending on the type of center channel speaker in use and your viewing device place the center speaker directly above or below your TV or in the center behind a perforated front projection screen Once the center channel speaker is installed position the left and right front speakers so that they are as far away from one another as the center channel speaker is from the preferred listening position Ideally the front channel speakers should be placed so that their tweeters are no more than 24 off center from the tweeter in the center channel speaker Depending on the specifics of your room acoustics and the type of speakers in use you may find that imaging is improved by moving the front left and right speak ers Slightly forward of the center channel System Configuration 17 speaker If possible adjust all front loudspeakers so that they are aimed at ear height when you are seated in the listening position Using these guidelines you ll find that it takes some experimentation to find the correct location for the front speakers in your particular install

68. tion where you wish to store this sta tion s frequency 3 Repeat the process after tuning any additional stations to be preset Auto Preset Preset stations may also be programmed automatically for the FM band To auto matically enter each station that may be tuned with acceptable quality into the AVRS s preset memories first select the FM band Next press and briefly hold the Auto Preset button pd until the MEMO and PRESET indicators begin to flash and Operation 24 the station frequency indication begins to increase Release the button and note that the tuner will search the entire FM band and stop briefly at each station that has acceptable signal strength The AVR5 will automatically assign a preset number to each station and then search for the next station The automatic scan process will stop when all 30 preset memory locations have been filled or the entire FM band has been scanned three times NOTE Using the automatic tuning mode in areas with more than 30 FM stations will completely fill the preset memories and overwrite any previously memorized presets for either AM or FM stations TIP The automatic scan process may enter stations that you do not wish to retain in the memory or it may enter a station on more than one frequency if the signal is too strong These unwanted stations may be removed from the memory using the Preset Clear function outlined below Recalling Preset Stations To manual
