NOTICE Modem and network connectors look similar Do not plug a telephone line into the network connector F NOTE If you can connect to your Internet service provider ISP your modem is functioning properly If you are sure that your modem is working properly and you still experience problems contact your ISP CHECK THE TELEPHONE WALL JACK Disconnect the telephone line from the modem and connect it to a telephone Listen for a dial tone Ensure that you have touchtone telephone service Try connecting the modem to a different telephone wall jack Slow connection speeds can be caused by telephone noise as well as by telephone line or network conditions Contact your telephone company or network administrator for more information Setting Up Your Computer CONNECT THE MODEM DIRECTLY TO THE TELEPHONE WALL JACK If you have other telephone devices sharing the line such as an answering machine fax machine surge protector or line splitter then bypass them and use the telephone line to connect the modem directly to the telephone wall jack CHECK THE CONNECTION Verify that the telephone line is connected to the modem CHECK THE TELEPHONE LINE Try using a different telephone line If you are using a line that is 3 m 10 ft or more in length try a shorter one IRREGULAR DIAL TONE If you have voice mail service you might hear an irregular dial tone when you have messages Contact your telephone company for instruction

Tab Function Results Displays the results of the test and any error conditions encountered Errors Displays error conditions encountered error codes and the problem description Help Describes the test and may indicate requirements for running the test Configuration Displays your hardware configuration for the selected device The Dell Diagnostics obtains configuration information for all devices from system setup memory and various internal tests and it displays the information in the device list in the left pane of the screen The device list may not display the names of all the components installed on your computer or all devices attached to your computer Parameters Allows you to customize the test by changing the test settings 4 When the tests are complete close the test screen to return to the Main Menu screen To exit the Dell Diagnostics and restart the computer close the Main Menu screen 86 Solving Problems Adding and Replacing Parts Before You Begin This section provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer Unless otherwise noted each procedure assumes that the following conditions exist e You have performed the steps in Shutting Down Your Computer e You have read the safety information in the Product Information Guide Recommended Tools The procedures in this document may require the following tools e Small flat blade screwdriver e Phillips screwdriver
15. are indicated by a yellow exclamation point or a red X if the device has been disabled Double click any device marked with an exclamation point to display the Properties window The Device status area in the Properties window reports the cards or devices that need to be reconfigured Reconfigure the devices or remove the devices from the Device Manager See the documentation that came with the device for information on configuring the device Solving Problems To resolve incompatibilities using the Hardware Troubleshooter 1 Click the Start button and click Help and Support 2 Type hardware troubleshooter in the Search field and click the arrow to start the search Click Hardware Troubleshooter in the Search Results list 4 Inthe Hardware Troubleshooter list click I need to resolve a hardware conflict on my computer and click Next Restoring Your Operating System You can restore your operating system in the following ways e Microsoft Windows XP System Restore returns your computer to an earlier operating state without affecting data files Dell PC Restore by Symantec restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer Dell PC Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any applications installed after you received the computer F NOTE Dell PC Restore is available only on computers purchased in certain regions Using Microsoft Windows XP System Res

22. properly the computer may not boot properly No error message indicates this failure a Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot b Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 5 degree angle and rotate the module down until it clicks into place If you do not feel the click remove the module and reinstall it 90 Adding and Replacing Parts 5 Replace the cover NOTICE If the cover is difficult to close remove the module and reinstall it Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer 6 Insert the battery into the battery bay or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical outlet 7 Turn on the computer As the computer boots it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer click the Start button click Help and Support and then click Computer Information Adding a Mini PCI Card fy CAUTION FCC rules strictly prohibit users from installing 5 GHz 802 11a 802 11a b 802 11a b g Wireless LAN Mini PCI cards Under no circumstances should the user install such a device Only trained Dell service personnel are authorized to install a 5 GHz Wireless LAN Mini PCI card If you are removing and or installing a 2 4 GHz 802 11b 802 11b g Mini PCI card follow the instructions noted below Only products approved for use in your portable computer may be installe
23. the device or change its order in the list e To enable or disable a device highlight the item and press the space bar Enabled items appear as white and display a small triangle to the left disabled items appear blue or dimmed without a triangle e To reorder a device in the list highlight the device and then press lt u gt or lt d gt not case sensitive to move the highlighted device up or down Boot sequence changes take effect as soon as you save the changes and exit system setup Appendix Performing a One Time Boot You can set a one time only boot sequence without entering system setup You can also use this procedure to boot the Dell Diagnostics on the diagnostics utility partition on your hard drive 1 Shut down the computer through the Start menu 2 Ifthe computer is connected to a docking device docked undock it See the documentation that came with your docking device for instructions Connect the computer to an electrical outlet Turn on the computer When the DELL logo appears press lt F 12 gt immediately If you wait too long and the Windows logo appears continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop Then shut down your computer and try again 5 When the boot device list appears highlight the device from which you want to boot and press lt Enter gt The computer boots to the selected device The next time you reboot the computer the previous boot order is restored Changing Printer Mode
