Stand behind the unit in the operating position to start the unit Blade Control Handie Recoil Starter Cutting Height Adjustment Lever Mulching W Spark Plug Wire Plug Figure 8 SECTION 8 OPERATION Keep hands and feet away from the chute area on the cutting deck See safety labels on page 4 The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes which can result in severe eye damage Always wear safety glasses or eye shields NOTE For best results raise the cutting position until it is determined which height is best for your lawn See Cutting Height Adjustment section Gas And Oil Fill Up Service the engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the separate engine manual Read instructions carefully WARNING Never fill fuel tank indoors with engine running or until the engine has been A allowed to cool for at least two minutes after running Before Starting e Attach spark plug wire to spark plug If equipped with a rubber boot make certain the metal loop on the end of the spark plug wire inside the rubber boot is fastened securely over the metal tip on the spark plug To Start Engine And Engage Blade Move the throttle control on the engine to the fast rabbit position Prime engine as instructed in the engine manual Standing behind the unit depress the blade control handle and hold it against the upper handle Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until
3. a uide wee Nut Rope E Guide Figure 6 e With the spark plug wire disconnected and grounded hold the blade control handle against the upper handle and pull the starter rope out of the engine Release the blade control handle Slip the starter rope into the rope guide Tighten the wing nut See Figure 6 Make certain all nuts and bolts are tightened securely e Your mower has been shipped as a mulcher To convert it to a side discharge mower lift the mulching plug Slide the two hooks on the side discharge deflector under the hinge pin on the mulching plug assembly Lower the mulching plug See Figure 7 ae Mulching Plug Co asm Sa e Im Ee Deflector AT e ZIL Hinge Pin ST Figure 7 SECTION 7 CONTROLS Blade Control Handle WARNING This control mechanism is a safety device Never attempt to bypass its operations The blade will be rotating whenever the engine is running The blade control handle is located on the upper handle of the mower See Figure 8 The blade control handle must be depressed in order to operate the unit Release the blade control handle to stop the engine and blade Throttle Control The throttle control is located on the engine It is used to regulate the engine speed WARNING The throttle control cannot be used to stop the engine Do not adjust the A throttle control with the engine running Recoil Starter The recoil starter handle is attached to the handle See Figure 8
4. engine reaches start of compression cycle rope will pull slightly harder at this point Let the rope rewind slowly e Pull rope with a rapid continuous full arm stroke Keep a firm grip on starter handle Return it slowly to the rope guide NOTE H any problems are encountered refer to the Trouble Shooting Guide for helpful information To Stop Engine And Blade e Release the blade control handle to stop the engine and blade T WARNING The blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the engine is shut off e Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent accidental starting while equipment is unattended Using Your Rotary Mower e Be sure that lawn is clear of stones sticks wire or other objects which could damage lawn mower or engine Such objects could be accidently thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator and others e For best results do not cut wet grass because it tends to stick to the underside of the mower preventing proper discharge of grass clippings and could cause you to slip and fall New grass thick grass or wet grass may require a narrower cut e When using side discharge mower the best mowing pattern is one that allows the clippings to discharge towards the uncut part of the lawn This permits recutting of the clippings to further pulverize them When cutting high weeds discharge towards cut portion then recut at right angles to
5. first direction For a healthier lawn always cut off one third or less of the total length of the grass Lawn should be cut in the fall as long as there is growth e This mower is designed to be operated at full throttle to give you the best cut and do the most effective job of mowing T WARNING If you strike a foreign object stop the engine Remove wire from spark plug thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage and repair the damage before restarting and operating the mower Extensive vibration of the mower during operation is an indication of damage The unit should be promptly inspected and repaired 10 SECTION 9 ADJUSTMENTS WARNING Do not at any time make any adjustment to lawn mower without first stopping engine and disconnecting spark plug wire Cutting Height Adjustment Adjustment Lever Figure 9 There is an adjusting plate and thumb lever at each wheel position to adjust the cutting height Each adjusting plate has nine height positions Height of cut will change if you move the thumb lever from one hole to another Simply depress the lever towards wheel and move the wheel and lever assembly to the desired position All wheels must be placed in the same relative position for uniform cutting height See Figure 9 For rough or uneven lawns move the height adjustment handles to positions which will give a higher cutting height Both front and rear handles must be placed in the same relative position Hand
6. or engine oil Also if the wheels are removed for any reason lubricate the surface of the axle bolt and the inner surface of the wheel with light oil Engine Follow engine manual for lubrication instructions Lubrication Chart Lubricate height adjustment Figure 11 12 SECTION 11 MAINTENANCE WARNING Be sure to disconnect and ground the spark plug wire before performing any A repairs or maintenance NOTE When tipping the unit empty the fuel tank and keep engine spark plug side up Cutting Blade WARNING When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement protect A hands by using heavy gloves or a rag to grasp the cutting biade To remove blade e Remove the bolt and blade bell support which hold the blade and adapter to the engine crankshaft See Figure 12 Remove the blade and the adapter from the crankshaft WARNING Periodically inspect the blade adapter for cracks especially if you strike a A foreign object Replace when necessary Blade Adapter Hex Bolt Figure 12 e When sharpening the blade follow the original angle of grind as a guide It is extremely important that each cutting edge receives an equal amount of grinding to prevent an unbalanced blade An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds may cause damage to the mower and could break causing personal injury e The blade can be tested by balancing it on a r

ITED WARRANTY FOR eL We TWO YEAR RESIDENTIAL ONE YEAR COMMERCIAL Proper maintenance of your Cadet equipment is the owners responsibility Follow the instructions in your operators manual for correct lubricants and maintenance schedule Your Cub Cadet dealer carries a complete line of quality lubricants and filters for your equipment s engine transmission chassis and _ attachments Riding mowers lawn tractors Cadet attachments and home maintenance products This limited warranty for residential users covers any defect in materials or workmanship in your Cadet equipment for two years from the date of purchase for the first user purchaser We will replace or repair any part or parts without charge through your authorized Cub Cadet dealer Batteries have a one year prorated limited warranty with 100 replacement during the first three months V belts for either the traction drive or any attachments are covered for one year only Cadet equipment used commercially is warranted for one year only Commercial use is defined as either having hired operators or used for income producing purposes items not covered The warranty does not cover routine maintenance items such as lubricants filters oil fuel air and hydraulic cleaning tune ups brake and or clutch inspection adjustments made as part of normal maintenance blade sharpening set up abuse accidents and normal wear It does not cover incidental costs such as transporting

12. container inside where there is an open flame or spark such as a gas water heater space heater or furnace s Never run an engine inside a closed area e To reduce fire hazard keep mower free of grass leaves or other debris build up Clean up oil or fuel spillage Allow mower to coo at least 5 minutes before storing Before cleaning repairing or inspecting make certain the blade and ail moving parts have stopped Disconnect the spark plug wire and keep the wire away from the spark plug to prevent accidental starting e Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness Also visually inspect blade for damage e g bent cracked Replace with blade which meets original equipment specifications e Keep all nuts bolts and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition e Never tamper with safety devices Check their proper operation regularly e After striking a foreign object stop the engine remove the wire from the spark plug and thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage Repair the damage before starting and operating the mower s Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment while the engine is running e Grass catcher components are subject to wear damage and deterioration which could expose moving parts or allow objects to be thrown For safety protection frequently check components and replace with manufacturers recommended parts when nece

17. he rules for safe operation in this manual As with any type of power equipment carelessness or error on the part of the operator can result in serious injury This lawn mower is capable of amputating hands and feet and throwing objects Failure to observe the following safety instructions could result in serious injury or cleath GENERAL OPERATION Read this owners guide carefully in its entirety before attempting to assemble this machine Read understand and follow all instructions on the machine and in the manual s before operation Be completely familiar with the controls and the proper use of this machine before operating it Keep this manual in a safe place for future and regular reference and for ordering replacement parts Your rotary mower is a precision piece of power equipment not a plaything Therefore exercise extreme caution at all times Your unit has been designed to perform one job to mow grass Do not use it for any other purpose Never allow children under 14 years old to operate a power mower Children 14 years old and over should only operate mower under close parental supervision Only responsible individuals who are familiar with these rules of safe operation should be allowed to use your mower Keep the area of operation clear of all persons particularly small children and pets Stop engine when they are in the vicinity of your mower to help prevent blade contact or thrown object injury Although the area of

20. le Height Adjustment Notch Lower Handle Figure 10 Your mower is shipped with the handle in the higher height position To lower the handle height proceed as follows Remove the starter rope from the rope guide e Remove the upper handle by removing the hand knobs and carriage bolts Lay the upper handle out of the way being careful not to bend or kink the cable 11 Remove the hairpin clips from the weld pins on the handle brackets Press inward on the legs of the lower handle Remove lower handle from the mower e Turn the lower handle around so the notch on the bottom of the lower handle is facing forward as shown in Figure 10 Reassemble placing the bottom holes in the handle over the weld pins in the handle mounting bracket e Reassemble the upper handle e Place the hairpin clips in the inner holes in the weld pins and attach the starter rope as instructed in the Set Up Instructions SECTION 10 LUBRICATION WARNING Always stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire before cleaning lubricating or doing any kind of work on lawn mower Blade Control Lubricate the pivot points on the blade control handle and the brake cable at least once a season with light oil See Figure 11 The blade control must operate freely in both directions Also lubricate the pivot points on the mulch baffle and the height adjustment lever Wheels Lubricate the wheel bearings if so equipped at least once a season with light oil
21. operation should be completely cleared of foreign objects an object may have been overlooked and could be accidentally thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator or any others allowed in the area Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used Remove all stones sticks wire bones toys and other foreign objects which could be picked up and thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator or any others allowed in the area Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of material toward roads sidewalks bystanders and the like To heip avoid a thrown objects injury keep children bystanders and helpers at least 75 feet from the mower while it is in operation Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles during operation or while performing an adjustment or repair to protect eyes from foreign objects that may be thrown from the machine in any direction Wear sturdy rough soled work shoes and close fitting slacks and shirts Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and steel toed shoes are recommended Do not wear loose fitting clothes or jewelry They can be caught in moving parts Never operate a unit in bare feet sandals or sneakers Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts Keep clear of discharge opening at all times as the rotating blade can cause injury e Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled o
22. ound shaft screwdriver Remove metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly It is recommended that the blade always be removed from the adapter for the best test of balance e Before reinstalling the blade and the blade adapter to the unit lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil or engine oil Lubricating the bolt holes bolts and inner surface of the nuts is also recommended To Reinstall Blade e Be sure to install the blade with the side of the blade marked Bottom or with part number facing the ground when the mower is in the operating position Be certain the blade is aligned with and seated onto the blade adapter flanges Place blade bell support on blade Make sure the notches on the blade bell support are aligned with the small hole in the blade Replace hex bolt Tighten to torque 450 in Ibs min 600 in Ibs max e To ensure safe operation of mower check all nuts and bolts periodically for correct torque 13 Deck Maintenance The underside of the mower deck should be cleaned after each use to prevent a buildup of grass clippings leaves dirt or other matter If this debris is allowed to accumulate it will invite rust and corrosion and may prevent proper mulching The deck may be cleaned by tilting the mower and scraping clean with a suitable tool make certain the spark plug wire is disconnected Do not use high pressure cleaners or water Engine Maint
