Black amp Decker ELECTRIC 18 SINGLE BLADE LAWN MOWER MODEL 8009 Clean electric power No oil or gas No starting or stopping problems Meets CPSC blade requirements for _ walk behind power mowers LIGHTWEIGHT only 36 Ibs easy to maneuver i EASILY ADJUSTABLE CUTTING HEIGHT you can select the right height from 34 to 3 RECESSED WHEELS for close cutting _ to walls fences and trees DOUBLE INSULATED no grounding required OWNER S MANUAL SAFETY RULES FOR ELECTRIC LAWN MOWER 10 11 12 13 14 AAN KNOW YOUR MOWER Read the Owner s Manual carefully Be thoroughly familiar with the controls and the proper use of your mower 2 AVOID DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT Don t use your mower in the rain or in damp or wet locations Don t operate it in gaseous or explosive atmospheres Motors normally spark and the sparks might ignite fumes 3 USE PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Wear safety spec tacles or goggles while mowing regular eyeglasses are not safety glasses Use face or aust mask if operation is dusty 4 KEEP GUARDS AND SHIELDS IN PLACE and keep in working order 5 GUARD AGAINST ELECTRIC SHOCK Repair or replace damaged mower cord or extension cords im mediately To prevent disconnection of mower cord from the extension cord during operation knot the cords exactly as shown in Figure 8A or use a cord connector shown in Figure 8B
2. 6 DANGER KEEP AWAY FROM BLADE AREA Risk of cut Keep hands and feet away from blade Don t attempt to remove cut material or unclog chute when blade is moving 7 DISCONNECT TOOL Release switch lever to turn off mower and unplug cord from receptacle or exten sion cord when tool is not in use before making adjustments before servicing cleaning and when changing blade accessories CAUTION KEEP CHILDREN AWAY All visitors should be kept a safe distance from work area STORE IDLE LAWN MOWER INDOORS When not in use tool should be stored indoors in dry high or locked up place out of reach of children DON T FORCE THE MOWER It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed USE RIGHT TOOL Do not use tool for any job except that for which it is intended DRESS PROPERLY Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry They can be caught in moving parts Use of rubber gloves and substantial rubber soled footwear is recommended when working outdoors DON T ABUSE CORD Never carry tool by cord or yank it to disconnect from receptacle Keep cord from heat oil and sharp edges WARNING To reduce the risk of electric shock hazard use only with an extension cord suitable for outdoor use Always connect extension cords to a fused line or one pro tected by a circuit breaker DON T OVERREACH Keep proper footing and balance at all times MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE K
3. adjustment while the motor is running or while the mower is plugged in 4 Mow only in daylight or in good artificial light 5 Never operate the equipment in wet grass Always be sure of your footing keep a firm hold on the handle and walk never run Operation 1 Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times 2 Release switch lever to turn mower off when crossing gravel drives walks or roads 3 If the mower stalls be sure to release switch lever to turn mower off and unplug the cord before attempting to unclog the chute or remove anything from under the deck 4 After striking a foreign object release switch lever to turn mower off and unplug the mower thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage and repair the damage before restarting and operating the mower 5 If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally release switch lever and unplug the mower and check immediately for the cause Vibration is generally a warning of trouble 6 Release switch lever to turn mower off and unplug the mower whenever you leave the equipment before unclog ging the deck or chute or cleaning the mower housing and when making any repairs or inspections 7 When cleaning repairing or inspecting make certain Nie blade and all moving parts have stopped 8 Shut the motor off and wait until the blade comes to a com plete stop before removing the grass catcher or unc
4. made 10 ALWAYS TURN THE SWITCH OFF AND UNPLUG THE MOWER WHEN LEAVING IT UNATTENDED EVEN FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME 11 When you are finished mowing turn mower OFF and unplug the extension cord at the electrical outlet before coiling it for storage BLADE SHARPENING Keep blades sharp for best mower performance Sharpening procedure is as follows 1 RELEASE SWITCH LEVER TO TURN MOWER OFF AND UNPLUG MOWER 2 The blade can be sharpened in several different ways Try to maintain the original cutting angle and sharpen each cutting edge an equal amount Bent or damaged blades should be replaced with No 80 336 Replacement Blade BY HAND Blade need not be removed Being careful not to cut youself sharpen both edges of the blade with a sharpening stone or fine tooth file FIGURE 11 B amp D No 80 306 BLADE SHARPENER Wear proper eye pro tection To keep blade from turning place a 2 x 4 about 2 foot long through the chute and against the side of the wheel as shown in the figure above Mount the sharpener in a 4 or electric drill Start the drill hold it with both hands and move the groove in the sharpener lightly back and forth along the cutting edge When one end of the blade is sharpened remove 2 x 4 turn blade 180 replace 2 x 4 and again sharpen as in the figure above OTHER SHARPENING METHODS Wear proper eye protection With the blade removed from the mower it can also be shar

7. ach cut will keep the extension cord away from the path of the mower 4 Mow across the face of slopes never up and down Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes Do not mow excessively steep slopes Always maintain good footing 5 Release switch to turn mower OFF when crossing any graveled area stones can be thrown by the blade MOWING PROCEDURE CONT D 6 Set mower at highest cutting height when mowing in rough ground or in tall weeds 7 From time to time turn off the mower UNPLUG CORD turn mower on its side Wipe out any accumulation of grass in the blade area Be careful of the sharp edges of the blade lf a grass catcher is used during the fast growing season the grass may tend to ctog up at the discharge opening Turn the switch OFF and disconnect the power cord plug Remove the catcher and shake the grass down to the back end of the bag Also clean out any grass or debris which may be packed around the discharging opening Replace the grass catcher 8 If moist grass causes frequent clogging it will help to clear the clippings from under the deck by increasing the cutting height at the front only of the mower The rear wheel set ting will maintain the grass height you want 9 If mower should start to vibrate abnormally turn mower OFF and unplug power cord Check immediately for cause Vibration is a warning of trouble Do not operate mower until a service check has been
8. andle legs so that they clear the mount ing brackets on the mower deck Figure 19 2 Lower the handle to a horizontal position away from the deck Now the mower can be hung upright on the wall Figure 18 PREVENTING CORRISION Fertilizers and other garden chern icals contain agents which greatly accelerate the corrosion of metals If you mow in areas where fertilizers or chemicals hawe been used the mower should be cleaned immediately afterward as follows 1 Be sure the tool is turned off and unplugged 2 Wipe all exposed parts with a damp cloth CAUTION DO NOT POUR OR SPRAY WATER ON THE MOWER IN AN ATTEMPT TO CLEAN IT Do not store the tool on or adjacent to fertilizers or chemicals Such storage can cause rapid corrosion IMPORTANT To assure product SAFETY and RELIABILITY repairs man tenance and adjustment including brush inspection amd replacement should be performed by BLACK amp DECKER Service Centers or other qualified service organizations always uing Black amp Decker replacement parts When servicing use ONLY IDENTICAL REPLACEMENT PARTS To increase the usefulness of this tool the following accessories are recommended 88 050 50 ft 16 ga 3 wire OUTDOOR EXTENSION CORD 88 100 100 ft 16 ga 3 wire OUTDOOR EXTENSION CORD 80 337 GRASS CATCHER ASSEMBLY 80 137 Replacement GRASS BAG 80 336 Replacement BLADE 80 306 BLADE SHARPENER 72 000 PROTECTIVE SPECTACLE
9. e throw ing of stones or other objects by the mower blade backward under the mower deck The shield also minimizes the possibility of accidental foot contact with the blade DO NOT operate mower without this safety shield in place ATTACHING EXTENSION CORD TO MOWER CORD DO NOT connect the extension cord to power source until you have finished reading this manual and are ready to start mowing To prevent disconnection of mower cord from extension cord when mowing 1 make a knot as shown in Figure 8A or 2 use the accessory Cord Connector shown in Figure 8B available at small extra cost from your dealer EXTENSION CORD No 80 305 TOOL E FIGURE 8A FIGURE 8B MOWING PROCEDURE FIGURE 9 FIGURE 10 1 Inspect area where mower is to be used and remove all stones sticks wire bones and other debris which might be thrown by the rotating blade 2 Place most of the extension cord close to the electrical outlet out of the path of the mower Figure 9 CAUTION Do not plug extension cord into receptacle outlet while standing in water or when hands are wet 3 Begin mowing in the area closest to the outlet and mow in a back and forth manner Figure 9 When you reach the edge of the lawn pivot the mower on the rear wheels the front of the mower moving toward the cord At the same time grasp the cord and flip the cord over the mower so that cord again lies on cut portion of lawn Figure 10 This action at the end of e
10. eep blade sharp and clean for best and safest performance Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING Don t carry plugged in tool with finger on switch Be sure switch is off when plugging in OBJECTS STRUCK BY THE LAWN MOWER BLADE can cause severe injuries to persons The lawn should always be carefully examined and cleared of all objects prior to each mowing IF MOWER STRIKES A FOREIGN OBJECT follow these steps a Release switch lever to turn off mower b Unplug power cord c Inspect for damage d Repair any damage before restarting and operating the mower USE IDENTICAL REPLACEMENT BLADES ONLY WHEN SERVICING Use only identical replacement parts Safety Spectacles are available at your Black amp Decker dealer ADDITIONAL LAWN MOWER SAFETY RULES Preparations 1 Read the operating and service instruction manual carefully Be thoroughly familiar with the controls and the proper use of the equipment 2 Never allow children to operate a power mower 3 Keep the area of operation clear of all persons particularly small children and pets Precautions 1 Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used and remove all stones sticks wires bones and other foreign objects that could be thrown by the blade 2 Do not operate the equipment when barefoot or wearing open sandals Always wear substantial footwear 3 Never attempt to make a wheel height
11. logging chute 9 Mow across the face of slopes never up and down Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes Do not mow excessively steep slopes 10 Never operate the mower without proper guards plates or other safety protective devices in place Maintenance 1 Be sure the switch lever is released and the cord unplugged before doing any maintenance 2 Check the blade at frequent intervals for proper tightness 3 Keep all nuts bolts and screws tight to be sure the equip ment is in safe working condition 4 Check the grass catcher bag frequently for wear or deterio ration Replace with new bags for safety protection DOUBLE INSULATION Your Mower is DOUBLE INSULATED to give you added safety This means that it is constructed throughout with TWO separate layers of electrical insulation or one DOUBLE thickness of insulation between you and the tool s electrical system Tools built with this insulation system are not intended to be grounded As a result your mower is equipped with a two prong plug which permits you to use extension cords without concern for maintaining a ground connection NOTE DOUBLE INSULATION does not take the place of normal safety precautions when operating this mower The insulation system is for added protection against injury resulting from a possible electrical insulation failure within the tool CAUTION When servicing Double Insulated Tools USE ONLY IDENTICAL REPLA
12. n the mounting screw at rear of the motor Figure 15 b Carefully push in on the forward cover locating tab Figure 16 c Tilt cover forward toward tabs and remaining tab will come free as cover is lifted off FIGURE 15 FIGURE 16 FIGURE 17 Place five 5 drops of motor oil in the felt reservoir at the top of the motor Figure 17 Replace the motor cover on deck as follows a Place the cover locating tab opposite the one you pushed in to remove cover in its slot in the deck b Carefully snap the other forward locating tab Figure 15 in the deck c Position the electric motor cord between the locating fingers on the rear of the motor cover Do not pinch the cord d Retighten the mounting screw No other lubrication is necessary Do not oil the wheels They have plastic bearings which require no lubrication CLEANING amp STORAGE TURN OFF AND UNPLUG MOWER Use only mild soap and a damp cloth to clean the mower Many household cleaners con tain chemicals which could seriously damage the plastic Also do not use gasoline turpentine lacquer or paint thinner dry cleaning fluids or similar products Clean out any clippings which may have accumulated on the underside of the deck After sev eral uses check all exposed fasteners for tightness Your mower should be stored in a dry place and to save Space it can be hung on a wall Figure 18 as follows FIGURE 18 FIGURE 19 1 Squeeze the lower h
13. pened on a bench grinder or when held in a vise with above Blade Sharpener or a power disc sander REMOVING amp ATTACHING BLADES RELEASE SWITCH LEVER TO TURN MOWER OFF AND UNPLUG MOWER Cut a piece of 2 x 4 wood about 2 foot long to keep blade from turning whlie removing blade nut E an SHAFT P TT Tr UPPER BLADE re SPACERS AS Fi L UPPER BLADE BLADE IA CO INSULATOR Sem SWASDER LOWER BLADE SPACER amp BLADE nut FIGURE 13 Wear gloves Position wood and remove nut as shown in Figure 12 If square blade spacer starts to turn with nut use a second wrench to hold spacer and keep shaft from turning Remove lower blade spacer lower insulator washer and blade Figure 13 When replacing sharpened or new blade on shoulder of upper blade insulator make sure cutting edges of the blades are closest to ground Place lower insulator washer over shoulder of the upper blade insulator sandwiching blade in between Now place blade spacer and the blade nut on the shaft Posi tion wood to keep shaft from turning Figure 14 and then securely tighten blade nut If square blade spacer starts to turn with nut use a second wrench to hold spacer and keep shaft from turning LUBRICATION At the end of each season lubricate the upper motor bearing as follows 1 2 RELEASE SWITCH LEVER TO TURN MOWER OFF AND UNPLUG MOWER Remove the motor cover as follows a Loose
