Start All Programs ClearOne Communications CHAT ClearOne CHAT gt Note To ensure optimal sound quality the CHAT 50 MUST be tuned properly prior to use or after the device has been moved The CHAT 50 s audio settings must also be customized for the specific application it is to be used with and for the specific device it is to be connected to CONNECTING THE CHAT 50 TO A PC 1 Using the included USB cable connect the CHAT 50 to your PC or laptop The status LED on the front of the CHAT 50 turns blue then red then blue again to indicate that Windows recognizes the CHAT 50 The Windows New Hardware Found dialog appears and Windows installs the USB 2 0 device drivers for CHAT on your system 2 Follow the on screen instructions When the installation is complete click the Close button gt Note The CHAT 50 derives its audio settings from the Windows sound settings if it is attached to a PC or through the 3rd party appplication s settings Skype Yahoo etc Refer to the tuning procedures in the Optimizing Sound Quality section in this manual or consult the specific 3rd party application s tuning adjustments Chapter 2 Getting Started CONNECTING THE CHAT 50 TO EXTERNAL DEVICES Connecting to a Telephone 1 Using the included power supply CHAT USB Plus International and Global Traveller models only connect the CHAT 50 to a power outlet as shown below 2 Connect the CHAT 50 to the Telephone using the appropriate
2. gt Note If your CHAT 50 is connected to a PC any changes you make to volume by pressing the CHAT 50 buttons also change the volume settings in Windows VOLUME UP VOLUME DOWN MUTE MUTE STATUS INDICATOR 4 Technical Support 800 283 5936 INSTALLING THE CHAT SOFTWARE FOR WINDOWS gt Note The install procedure is the same for all versions of Windows XP Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems The CHAT 50 can be used right out of the box and there s no software to download or install if it is to be used only with a PG The following procedure can be used to download and install the CHAT software for the CHAT 50 if it is to be used with other devices or if the CHAT 50 firmware requires updates 1 Download the CHAT software by accessing the following http www clearone com support downloads php content main 2 Select your device from the BY PRODUCT window and click SEARCH and the screen will display only those downloads available for your specific device 3 Select the latest version of the CHAT software and the system will display a confirmation window for the software to be downloaded to your computer Unzip the downloaded folder and run Setup exe to begin the installation process Follow the on screen prompts to complete the software installation When the CHAT software installation is complete start the CHAT software by double clicking the ClearOne CHAT that is now on your Windows desktop or by clicking

POOR SOUND QUALITY If you experience poor sound quality check the following list for solutions to common Issues e Ensure the CHAT 50 is connected to your computer start the CHAT application then verify test and adjust the audio settings as needed to obtain good sound quality Or select an appropriate ClearOne pre programmed device and click Apply to apply the settings to the CHAT 50 If the issue remains unresolved the 3rd Party device or application may be responsible for the poor sound quality Refer to the device or application documentation or contact the manufacturer s technical support for assistance e Verify that all cables are properly and securely connected Refer to the appropriate connection diagrams in Chapter 2 Getting Started of this manual for more information e If your CHAT 50 is connected to a USB hub the USB hub must be connected to an external power source e lf you have another USB device such as a digital camera connected to your computer on the same USB bus as your CHAT 50 Windows may generate the error message USB Controller Bandwidth Exceeded In this case you must move the other USB device to a separate USB bus The CHAT 50 is a high performance USB device that requires sufficient bandwidth to function properly e Some USB cameras that use audio drivers are automatically assigned by Windows as the default audio playback device even though the camera doesn t have a speaker In this case disconnect

ME e Hm My Devices Output Level XUN Di Update Firmware USB J Analog Mix Line Echo Cancellation ClearOne e USB Audio Controls CHAT 50 audio settings when it is connected via USB to your computer Use the mute buttons to mute the microphone or speaker on the CHAT 50 Use the sliders to adjust the microphone level and speaker level Soeaker and microphone level adjustments made in the CHAT software will automatically change the speaker and microphone volume levels in Windows e Line Audio Controls line in and line out audio levels when the CHAT 50 is connected to devices through its 3 5mm jack These controls are grayed out unavailable when there are no devices connected to the 3 5mm jack Use the input slider to adjust the level of the incoming audio to the speaker use the output slider to adjust the level of the outgoing audio to the far end e Speaker Controls speaker settings when the CHAT 50 is connected to devices through its 3 5mm port Normal USB audio and line in audio from the 3 5mm jack are mixed through the CHAT 50 speaker Video Mode Routes audio from the far end of the conference call to the connected video conferencing device or application instead of the CHAT 50 speaker USB audio is routed through the CHAT 50 speaker Ensure that the CHAT 50 is properly connected using the appropriate accessory adapter cable sold separately See con nection diagrams earlier in this manual External Speakers Routes both U

SB and line in audio sources to external speaker s connected to the CHAT 50 s 3 5mm jack In this mode the CHAT 50 functions as a microphone only This is useful for video conferencing to ensure the audio and video originate from the same point in the room e Line Echo Cancellation Enables line echo cancellation which eliminates echo when the CHAT 50 is connected to a telephone Telephones route audio from the mouthpiece to the earpiece so that you can hear yourself talk which causes feedback when using a speaker phone WARNING Enabling line echo cancellation while not connected to a telephone may cause audio problems so only use this option while connected to a telephone Any settings changes that made on this screen are instantaneously applied to the CHAT 50 In addition the option to click on the Save to Database is available to capture the current settings and save them as a custom device as described in the next section Chapter 4 Using the CHAT Application 15 Advanced Settings Database The Database screen allows you to view devices create devices and edit devices in the Device Database The database includes pre defined devices with optimal audio settings pre programmed by ClearOne identified by the ClearOne icon next to the devices Custom devices that have been created using this screen or the My Devices screen are identified by the Custom Device icon f next to the device Chat 50 Personal Speakerphone D
