1. the State of California to cause cancer As the unit is used carbon deposits build up on the muffler and spark ar resting screen For normal homeowner use however the muffler and spark ar resting screen will not require any ser vice After 50 hours of use we recom mend that your muffler and spark ar resting screen be serviced or replaced by a Sears Service Center REPLACE SPARK PLUG Replace spark plug each year to ensure the engine starts easier and runs better Set spark plug gap at 0 025 inch ignition timing is fixed nonadjustable 1 Twist then pull off spark plug boot 2 Remove spark plug from cylinder and discard 3 Replace with Champion RCJ 6Y spark plug and tighten securely with a 3 4 inch socket wrench 4 Reinstall the spark plug boot REPLACE FUEL FILTER To replace fuel filter drain unit by run ning it dry of fuel then remove fuel cap retainer assembly from tank Pull filter from tank and remove it from the fuel line Install new fuel filter on fuel line reinstall parts Fuel Filter Fuel Line SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS 4 WARNING Disconnect the spark plug before performing maintenance service or adjustments except for car buretor adjustments We recommend all service and adjust ments not listed in this manual be per formed by your Sears Service Center CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT 4 WARNING Keep others away when making idle speed adjustments The blade will be moving during mo

18. ntire contents of this container into 1 gallon of gasoline to achieve the proper fuel mixture DO NOT USE automotive oil or boat oil These oils will cause engine damage When mixing fuel follow instructions printed on container Once oil is added to gasoline shake container momentarily to assure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed Always read and follow the safety rules relating to fuel before fueling your unit IMPORTANT Experience indicates that alcohol blended fuels called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol can attract mois ture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage Acid ic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage To avoid engine problems empty the fuel system before storage for 30 days or longer Drain the gas tank start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty Use fresh fuel next season Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur See the STORAGE section for additional information 5 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS It is recommended that the engine not be operated for longer than 30 seconds at full throttle Releasing the trigger and allowing the engine to briefly return to idle speed 5 10 sec onds will be sufficient IMPORTANT POINTS e Use the minimum throttle speed nec essary to effectively cut hedges for optimal hedge trimmer performance e Never attempt to use this hedge trim

21. st of this procedure Wear your protective equipment and observe all safety pre cautions When making adjustments use a screwdriver short enough to keep your hands behind the hand guard and away from the blade After making adjustments the blade must not move at idle speed The carburetor has been carefully set at the factory Adjustments may be necessary if you notice any of the fol lowing conditions e Engine will not idle when the throttle is released e The blade moves at idle 26 Keep others away when making idle speed adjustments Make adjustments with the unit resting on a level surface free of debris that can be caught in the hedge trimmer blade Serious injury to the operator and others can occur if the carburetor is not properly adjusted Keep all parts of your body away from the blade and muffler Idle Speed Adjustment Allow engine to idle Adjust speed until engine runs without blade moving idle too fast or engine stalling idle speed too slow e Turn idle speed screw clockwise to increase engine speed if engine stalls or dies e Turn idle speed screw counterclock wise to decrease engine speed if the blade moves at idle A WARNING Recheck the idle speed after each adjustment The blade must not move at idle speed to avoid serious injury to the operator or others Idle Speed Screw lf you require further assistance or are unsure about performing this proce dure contact your Sears Service Ce
