16. fuel container source and site before starting the engine A WAR Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower while starting engine or operating mower Never run engine indoors or in enclosed poorly ventilated areas Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide an odorless and deadly gas Keep hands feet hair and loose clothing away from any moving parts on engine and lawn mower OPERATION STARTING THE ENGINE 1 Move the blade depth control lever back to the START position in the adjacent top notch 2 When starting the engine for the first time push primer five times For all future starts push the primer three times See Figure 6 Do not prime to restart a warm engine NOTE If you push the primer too many times excessive fuel will flood the carburetor and the engine will be difficult to start 3 Standing behind the edger depress the blade control bail and hold it against the upper handle with your left hand 4 With your right hand grasp the recoil starter handle and slowly pull the rope outward until engine reaches the start of its com pression cycle the rope will pull slightly harder at this point 5 After slowly allowing the rope to recoil pull the rope with a rapid continuous full arm stroke Keep a firm grip on starter handle throughout the entire stroke WARNING Rapid retraction of starter cord kickback will pull hand and arm toward engine fa
17. is pinched 15 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE BELT REPLACEMENT NOTE To aid in reassembly note the orientation of the drive belt on the two idler pulleys and the engine flywheel pulley prior to performing the following steps Refer to Figure 17 The edger drive belt is subject to wear and should be replaced if any signs of cracking shredding or rotting are present To replace the belt proceed as follows Working in front of the edger loosen the flange lock nut on top of frame allowing the idler pulley assembly to pivot slightly out from the frame See Figure 17 1 Engine Flywheel Pulley Assembly Figure 17 2 With your other hand carefully reach under the rear of the edger and remove the belt from around the engine flywheel pulley See Figure 17 3 Remove the spindle sheaves belt guard by removing the two self tapping screws which secure it to the blade plate assembly See Figure 18 Belt Guard i Spindle Sheave Top Pulley 72 Engine Flywheel Pulley Figure 18 4 Carefully remove the belt from off of the pulleys again making sure to note the orientation of the belt Discard the belt See Figure 18 5 Working from the front of the edger place the belt onto the spindle sheaves route it back onto the top and bottom idler pulleys and then place it onto the engine flywheel pulley NOTE Make certain that the V side of the belt is seated into the top pulley and the f
18. properly gapped and free of deposits Replace the spark plug annually 1 Disconnect the cap from the spark plug and remove any dirt from the spark plug area 2 Use the proper size spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug NOTE Replace with a Champion RJ19LM spark plug 3 Check the gap A with a wire gauge B See Figure 11 Spark plug gap should be 0 030 in 0 76 mm If necessary reset the gap 4 Install and tighten the spark plug to the recommended torque 180 Ib in 20 Nm 5 Attach the spark plug cap to the spark plug Air Cleaner A dirty air cleaner will restrict air flow to the carburetor and cause poor engine performance Inspect the filter each time the engine is oper ated You will need to clean the filter more frequently if you operate the engine in very dusty areas Clean the air cleaner every 25 hours of operation or once a season Replace the air cleaner annually A WARNING Never start or run the engine with the air cleaner assembly or the air filter removed NOTE Do not use pressurized air or solvents to clean the filter Pres surized air can damage the filter and solvents will dissolve the filter 1 Remove the screw A from the top of the air filter cover B See Figure 12 2 To prevent debris from falling into the carburetor carefully remove the air filter cover 3 Remove the foam element C from the air filter base 13 Figure 11

JUSTMENTS Bevel Adjustment The angle of the edger blade can be adjusted by placing the bevel adjustment in one of three positions for edging See Figure 3 Figure 1 2 Tighten the hand knobs which are located on both the left and right sides of the handle Starter Rope 1 Locate the rope guide found on the right side of the upper handle Loosen but do NOT remove the wing knob which secures the rope guide to the upper handle See Figure 2 2 Stand behind the edger and hold the blade control against the upper handle 3 Gently pull the starter rope out of the engine A WARNING Figure 3 The edger blade WILL rotate when the starter rope is pulled NOTE The starter rope will not pull out of the engine unless the blade control refer to Figure 2 is depressed against the upper handle 4 Slip the starter rope through the top of the rope guide Retighten the wing knob which secures the rope guide to the upper handle OPERATION Blade Control Be Recoil Starter Blade Depth Control Lever Curb Height gt N Adjustment Lever Figure 4 A WARNING Be familiar with all the controls and their proper operation Know how to stop the machine and disengage it quickly BLADE CONTROL Located on the upper handle the blade control must be depressed against the upper handle in order to operate the edger Releasing the blade control stops the engine

Time Use 1 Remove oil fill dipstick G See Figure 5 2 With the mower on level ground empty entire contents of oil bottle provided into the engine oil fill H 3 Replace oil fill dipstick and tighten Subsequent Uses Use 4 stroke motor oil that meets or exceeds the requirements for API service category SF SG SH SJ or later Always check the API service label on the oil container to be sure it includes the letters SF SG SH SJ or later Outdoor temperatures determine the proper oil viscosity for the engine Use the chart to select the best viscosity for the outdoor temperature range expected Below 40 F 4 C the use of SAE 30 will result in hard starting Above 80 F 27 C the use of 10W 30 may cause increased oil consumption Check oil level more frequently 1 Check the oil with the engine stopped and level 2 Remove the oil fill dipstick and wipe it clean 3 Insert and tighten the oil fill dipstick Remove it to check the oil level See Figure 5 4 If the oil level is near or below the lower limit mark on the dipstick remove the oil fill dipstick and fill with the recommended oil to the upper limit mark J Do not overfill 5 Reinstall the oil fill dipstick Gasoline CAUTION Do not use unapproved gasolines such as E85 Do not mix oil in gasoline or modify engine to run on alternate fuels This will damage the engine components and void the engine warranty Fuel must meet these r

Use a brush or dry cloth 14 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE LUBRICATION EDGER BLADE CARE Wheels A WARNING Lubricate the wheels and bearings at least once a season with a light The edger blade is sharp Wear leather work gloves to protect your oil Also if the wheels are removed for any reason lubricate the surface hands when working around the edger blade of the axle bolt and the inner surface of the wheel with light oil Pivot Points 1 Use two wrenches one wrench to prevent the hex bolt head from Lubricate the pivot points on the blade control bail blade depth control spinning and the other to remove the flange nut to remove the lever and if applicable the blade adjustment lever and curb height edger blade Refer to Figure 16 adjustment lever with light oil at least once a season Bearing Block Lubricate the bearing block every 25 hours or at least once a season Simply apply oil at each end of the cover plate See Figure 15 Flange Nut Figure 16 2 Remove and discard the edger blade but retain the flange nut 3 Install the replacement edger blade and the flange nut removed earlier Use a torque wrench to tighten the flange nut to between Figure 15 37 foot lbs and 50 foot Ibs NOTE Make certain that the drive belt is seated correctly on the blade spindle and that it is riding smoothly on the spindle sheaves and is not pinched between them Repeat the first three steps if the belt
