Handle Mounting Bracket Insert hairpin clip here Weld Pin Figure 3 e The rope guide is attached to the right side of upper handle Loosen the wing nut which secures the rope guide See Figure 4 e With spark plug wire disconnected and grounded hold the blade control handle against the upper handle and pull the starter rope out of the engine Release blade control handle Slip the rope into the rope guide Tighten the wing nut See Figure 4 e Tighten all nuts and bolts securely e Attach the cables to the lower handle with the two cable ties already on the lower handle Pull tight the cable ties and cut off the extra Slip rope into rope guide Wing Nut Figure 4 Assembling Grass Catcher NOTE Make certain bag is turned right side out before assembling warning label will be on the outside Soft Grass Bag Parts for Soft Grass Bag 1 Front Frame amp Rear Frame 2 Bag Assemble soft grass bag as follows e Join the rear frame and front frame assembly as shown in Figure 5A e Place bag over frame black plastic side is the bottom of bag Slip the openings in the side of the plastic channel on bag over the hooks on the grass catcher frame e Secure bag to frame by working the plastic channels on bag over frame as shown in Figure 5B All of the plastic channels except center top of bag attach from the outside of bag Center top of bag attaches from the inside of bag A 49 Front F

7. injury to the operator and others e For best results do not cut wet grass because it tends to stick to the underside of the mower preventing proper discharge of grass clippings and could cause you to slip and fall New grass thick grass or wet grass may require a narrower cut e Blade speed should be adjusted to the condition of the lawn e Fora healthy lawn never cut more than one third of the total length of the grass at any one cutting Lawn should be cut in the fall as long as there is growth WARNING Never operate your unit without either the rear deflector or entire grass catcher assembly in place SECTION 6 MAKING ADJUSTMENTS WARNING Do not at any time make any adjustment to lawn mower without first stopping engine and disconnecting spark plug wire Cutting Height An adjusting plate and thumb lever at each wheel position provides cutting height adjustment Each adjusting plate has nine height positions Height of cut will be changed when the thumb lever is moved from one hole to another e Simply depress the lever towards wheel and move wheel and lever assembly to desired position All wheels must be placed in the same relative position See Figure 14 Figure 14 e This mower is designed to be operated at full throttle to give you the best cut and do the most effective job of bagging the cut grass WARNING If you strike a foreign object A stop the engine Remove wire from spark plug thoroughly
8. surface of the nuts e Install the blade adapter on the crankshaft with the star away from the engine Refer to Figure 18 Place the blade with the side marked bottom or with part number facing away from the adapter e Align the blade bell support over the blade with the tabs in the holes of the blade and insert the hex bolt Tighten the hex bolt to the torque listed in the Blade Mounting Torque section below Blade Mounting Torque Center Bolt 450 in lbs min 600 in Ibs max IMPORTANT To ensure safe operation all nuts and bolts must be checked periodically for correct tightness Deck Care NOTE We do not recommend the use of pressure washers or garden hose to clean your unit These may cause damage to electric components spindles pulleys bearings or the engine The use of water will shorten life of the mower and reduce its serviceability e The underside of the mower deck should be cleaned after each use to prevent a buildup of grass clippings leaves dirt or other matter If this debris is allowed to accumulate it will invite rust and corrosion and may cause an uneven discharge of grass clippings at the next cutting SECTION 8 OFF SEASON STORAGE The following steps should be taken to prepare lawn mower for storage e Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described in the lubrication instructions e Refer to engine manual for correct engine storage instructions e Coat mower cutting blade with

18. e manual s before operation Be completely familiar with the controls and the proper use of this machine before operating it Keep this manual in a safe place for future and regular reference and for ordering replacement parts Your rotary mower is a precision piece of power equipment not a plaything Therefore exercise extreme caution at all times Your unit has been designed to perform one job to mow grass Do not use it for any other purpose Never allow children under 14 years old to operate a power mower Children 14 years old and over should only operate mower under close parental supervision Only responsible individuals who are familiar with these rules of safe operation should be allowed to use your mower Keep the area of operation clear of all persons particularly small children and pets Stop engine when they are in the vicinity of your mower to help prevent blade contact or thrown object injury Although the area of operation should be completely cleared of foreign objects an object may have been overlooked and could be accidentally thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator or any others allowed in the area Wear sturdy rough soled work shoes and close fitting slacks and shirts Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and steel toed shoes are recommended Do not wear loose fitting clothes or jewelry They can be caught in moving parts Never operate a unit in bare feet
19. e over the weld pins in the handle mounting bracket e Reassemble the upper handle e Place the hairpin clips in the inner holes in the weld pins and attach the starter rope as instructed in the Set Up Instructions Throttle Control If your lawn mower engine is equipped with a throttle control that needs adjustment or if it has been replaced proceed as follows Note that engines with fixed throttle cannot be adjusted Three types of engines are illustrated in Figure 16 Follow the illustration that is applicable to your mower Briggs amp Stratton Quantum Engines Briggs amp Stratton Sprint and Classic Engines Control Lever On Engine Figure 16 e Remove the screw that secures the cable clamp Remove the cable clamp from the cable NOTE f you have a Tecumseh engine simply loosen the screw shown in Figure 16 so the cable will move freely beneath the clamp It is not necessary to remove the screw and clamp completely e Push the throttle control lever on the handle all the way forward as far as it will go then back it off one click Make certain the throttle control lever remains in this position e Push the control lever on the engine as far toward the rear of the engine as it will go Secure the cable in this position with the cable clamp and screw Carburetor WARNING If any adjustments are made A to the engine while the engine is running e g carburetor

24. inspect the mower for any damage and repair the damage before restarting and operating the mower Extensive vibration of the mower during operation is an indication of damage The unit should be promptly inspected and repaired Using the Mulcher For effective mulching do not cut wet grass because it tends to stick to the underside of the deck preventing proper mulching of grass clippings New or thick grass may require a narrower cut The ground speed should be adjusted to the condition of the lawn If mowing has been delayed and the grass has been allowed to grow in excess of 4 mulching is not recommended Mow using the grass bag if so equipped to reduce the grass height to 3 1 4 maximum before mulching Handle Height Your mower is shipped with the handle in the higher height position To lower the handle height for your convenience proceed as follows l e Q a Lower Handle Notch Figure 15 e Remove the starter rope from the rope guide e Remove the upper handle by removing the hand knobs and carriage bolts Lay the upper handle out of the way being careful not to bend or kink the cables Remove the hairpin clips from the weld pins on the handle brackets Press outward on the legs of the lower handle and remove it from the mower e Turn the lower handle around so the notches on the bottom of the lower handle are facing forward as shown in Figure 15 Reassemble placing the bottom holes in the handl
25. is equipped with a rubber boot over the spark plug wire ensure that the metal cap on the end of the spark plug wire inside the rubber boot is fastened securely over the metal tip on the spark plug k Start Engine and Engage Blade Move throttle control lever if equipped to the fast rabbit position e f engine is equipped with a primer prime engine as instructed in the separate engine manual packed with your unit e Standing behind the unit depress the blade control handle and hold it against the upper handle e Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until engine reaches start of compression cycle rope will pull slightly harder at this point Let the rope rewind slowly e Pull rope with a rapid continuous full arm stroke Keep a firm grip on starter handle Return it slowly to the rope guide NOTE f any problems are encountered refer to the Trouble Shooting Guide To Stop Engine and Blade e Release the blade control handle to stop the engine and blade WARNING The blade continues to rotate A for a few seconds after engine is shut off e Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent accidental starting while equipment is unattended Using Your Rotary Mower A e Be sure that lawn is clear of stones sticks wire or other objects which could damage lawn mower or engine Such objects could be accidentally thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal
26. keep clear of all moving parts Be careful of heated surfaces and muffler Minor carburetor adjustments may be required to compensate for differences in fuel temperature altitude and load To adjust carburetor refer to the separate engine manual packed with your mower NOTE A dirty air cleaner will cause an engine to run rough Be certain air cleaner is clean and attached to the carburetor before adjusting carburetor SECTION 7 MAINTAINING YOUR LAWN MOWER Lubrication Refer to Lubrication Chart in Figure 17 WARNING Always stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire before cleaning lubricating or doing anv kind of work on lawn mower Figure 17 Lubrication Chart Blade Control e Lubricate the pivot points on the blade control handle and the brake cable at least once a season with light oil The blade control must operate freely in both directions Rear amp Side Discharge Doors e The torsion springs and pivot points should be lubricated periodically with light oil to prevent any rust or binding Door must work freely Wheels e The wheels require no lubrication However if the wheels are removed for any reason lubricate the surface of the axle bolt and the inner surface of the wheel with light oil Engine oil may also be used Engine e Follow engine manual for instruction and schedule of lubrication NOTE When tipping the unit empty the fuel tank and keep engine spark plug side up Blade Care e Pe

32. riodically inspect the blade adapter for cracks especially if you strike a foreign object Replace when necessary WARNING When removing the cutting A blade for sharpening or replacement protect hands by using heavy gloves or a rag to grasp the cutting blade e Remove the bolt and blade support or bell washer which hold the blade and adapter to the engine crankshaft See Figure 18 Remove the blade and adapter from the crankshaft Blade Adapter B Hex Bolt Figure 18 When sharpening the blade follow the original angle of grind as a guide It is extremely important that each cutting edge receives an equal amount of grinding to prevent an unbalanced blade NOTE An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds and may cause damage to the mower and or personal injury e The blade can be tested by balancing it on a round shaft screwdriver See Figure 19 Remove metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly It is recommended that the blade always be removed from the adapter for the best test of balance 1 Insert screw driver through hole 2 Blade should be parallel to ground Screw Driver Blade o 0 o Ground Figure 19 e Before reassembling the blade and the blade adapter to the unit lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil or engine oil Also lubricate the bolt holes bolts and inner
