Pivot shield to release bracket from slot See INSTALLATION OF THE CUTTING HEAD and ATTACHING THE PLASTIC SHIELD for illustrations Be sure to store all parts and in structions for future use Never use the trim mer head with the metal blade installed ATTACHING THE METAL SHIELD WARNING The metal shield must be properly installed on the tool anytime the tool is used with a blade The forward tip ofthe metal shield helps to reduce the occurrence of blade thrust which can cause serious injury such as amputation to the operator or by standers Failure to install the shield in the position shown can result in serious injury to the operator The length of the shield must be aligned with the length of the tube 1 Place the metal shield under the gearbox and align the screw holes ght Gearbox Shield 2 Insert and thread the 4 mounting screws through the holes of the gearbox and the metal shield Tighten evenly and secure ly with the hex wrench provided INSTALLATION OF THE METAL BLADE AA WARNING Wear protective gloves when handling or performing maintenance on the blade to avoid injury The blade is sharp and can cut you even when it is not moving A WARNING Donot use any blades or fastening hardware other than the washers and nuts shown in the following illustrations These parts must be provided by Poulan Weed Eater and installed as shown below Failure to use proper parts can cause the blade to fly off a

6. nonadjustable 1 Twist then pull off spark plug boot 2 Remove spark plug from cylinder and discard 3 Replace with Champion RCJ 6Y spark plug and tighten securely with a 3 4 inch socket wrench Reinstall the spark plug boot 11 SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS REPLACING THE LINE 9 Insert the ends of the lines through exit 1 Press the tab on the side of the trimmer holes in the sides of the trimmer head head and twist the lock ring 10 Place the spool in the trimmer head 2 Remove the lock ring and tap button 11 Make sure the lines are not caught between the rim of the spool and the wall of the trim y Tab mer head a 12 Reinstall the tap button and lock ring onto ao Lock Ring the trimmer head 13 Align the lock ring over the catches on the Tap Button trimmer head Push the ring down and turn until the catches lock into place 3 Pull the spool out of the trimmer head Remove any remaining line 4 Clean dirt and debris from all parts Re place spool if it is worn or damaged 5 Replace with a pre wound spool or re place line using two 20 foot lengths of 0 095 inch 2 4 mm diameter Poulan PRO brand line 6 When installing new line on an existing spool insert 1 16 inch of the end of each line into the anchoring holes in the bed of 14 Make sure the lock ring is securely fas the spool tened by pulling on it and twisting in both di rections A WARNING All catches must be fas tened a
7. strap hook to the clamp located between the trigger handle and the handle bar clamp base and lift the tool to the oper ating position CONFIGURING YOUR UNIT You can configure your unit using a cutting head for grass and light weeds or a weed blade for cutting grass weeds and brush up to 1 2 inch in diameter To assemble your unit go to the section for the desired configuration and follow the instructions ASSEMBLY INFORMATION TRIMMER HEAD TRIMMER NOTE Remove the blade and metal shield be fore attaching the plastic shield and trimmer head To remove blade push in locking lever and hold Rotate blade nut until the locking lever falls into one of the grooves in the dust cup Continue to hold the locking lever This will keep the shaft from turning while loosening the blade nut Remove blade nut by turning clockwise Release locking lever Remove both washers and blade To remove metal shield loosen and remove the four mounting screws See AT TACHING THE METAL SHIELD and INSTAL LATION OF THE METAL BLADE for illustra tions Be sure to store all parts and instructions for future use ATTACHING THE PLASTIC SHIELD AND TRIMMER HEAD A WARNING The shield must be prop erly installed The shield provides partial protection to the operator and others from the risk of thrown objects and is equipped with a line limiter blade which cuts excess line to the proper length The line limiter blade on un derside of s

By using the unit properly the occurrence of blade thrust will be reduced and the operator will be less likely to lose control N Cut only grass weeds and woody brush up to 1 2 inch in diameter with the weed blade Do not let the blade contact material it cannot cut such as stumps rocks fences metal etc or clusters of hard woody brush having a diameter greater than 1 2 inch Keep the blade sharp A dull blade is more likely to snag and thrust Cut only at full throttle The blade will have maximum cutting power and is less likely to bind or stall Feed the blade deliberately and not too rapidly The blade can thrust away if it is fed too rapidly Cut only from your left to your right Cutting on right side of the shield will throw debris away from the operator Use the shoulder strap and keep a firm grip on the unit with both hands A properly adjusted shoulder strap will support the weight of the unit freeing your arms and hands to control and guide the cutting motion Keep feet comfortably spread apart and braced for a possible sudden rapid thrust of unit Do not overreach Keep firm footing and balance Keep blade below waist level it will be easier to maintain control of unit Do not raise the engine above your waist as the blade can come dangerously close to your body Do not swing unit with such force that you are in danger of losing your balance Bring the engine to cutting speed before en te

Switch Ensure ON STOP switch functions properly by pushing and releasing the switch Make sure engine stops Wait 5 seconds before attempting to restart unit to allow switch to reset Restart engine and continue Fuel Tank Discontinue use of unit if fuel tank shows signs of damage or leaks Debris Shield Discontinue use of unit if debris shield is damaged INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT AND DE CALS e After each use inspect complete unit for loose or damaged parts Clean the unit and decals using a damp cloth with a mild deter gent e Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth CLEAN AIR FILTER A dirty air filter decreases engine perform ance and increases fuel consumption and harmful emissions Always clean after every 5 hours of operation 1 Clean the cover and the area around it to keep dirt from falling into the carburetor chamber when the cover is removed 2 Remove parts by pressing button to re lease air filter cover NOTE To avoid creating a fire hazard or producing harmful evaporative emissions do not clean filter in gasoline or other flammable solvent 3 Wash the filter in soap and water 4 Allow filter to dry 5 Add a few drops of oil to the filter squeeze the filter to distribute oil 6 Replace parts dD Air Filter Cover REPLACE SPARK PLUG Replace the spark plug each year to ensure the engine starts easier and runs better Set spark plug gap at 0 025 in Ignition timing is fixed and
11. al lawn mowers cannot reach In the mowing position keep the line parallel to the ground Avoid pressing the head into the ground as this can scalp the ground and damage the tool Mowing SWEEPING The fanning action of the rotating line can be used to blow away loose debris from an area Keep the line parallel to and above the area surface and swing the tool from side to side Sweeping OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE WITH WEED BLADE 10 Blade Thrust is a reaction that only occurs when using a bladed unit This reaction can cause serious injury such as amputation Carefully study this section It is important that you understand what causes blade thrust how you can reduce the chance of its occurring and how you can remain in control of unit if blade thrust occurs WHAT CAUSES BLADE THRUST Blade Thrust can occur when the spinning blade contacts an object that it does not cut This contact causes the blade to stop for an instant and then suddenly move or thrust away from the object that was hit The thrusting reaction can be violent enough to cause the operator to be propelled in any direction and lose control of the unit The uncontrolled unit can cause serious injury if the blade contacts the operator or others WHEN BLADE THRUST OCCURS Blade Thrust can occur without warning if the blade snags stalls or binds This is more likely to occur in areas where it is difficult to see the material being cut
12. arest authorized service center or call POULAN WEED EATER at 1 800 554 6723 WARRANTY COMMENCEMENT DATE The warranty period begins on the date the small off road engine is purchased LENGTH OF COVERAGE This warranty shall be for a peri od of two years from the initial date of purchase WHAT IS COVERED REPAIR OR RE PLACEMENT OF PARTS Repair or replace ment of any warranted part will be performed at no charge to the owner at an approved POU LAN WEED EATER servicing center If you have any questions regarding your warranty rights and responsibilities you should contact your nearest authorized service center or call POULAN WEED EATER at 1 800 554 6723 WARRANTY PERIOD Any warranted part which is not scheduled for replacement as re quired maintenance or which is scheduled only for regular inspection to the effect of repair or 14 replace as necessary shall be warranted for 2 years Any warranted part which is scheduled for replacement as required maintenance shall be warranted for the period of time up to the first scheduled replacement point for that part DIAGNOSIS The owner shall not be charged for diagnostic labor which leads to the deter mination that a warranted part is defective if the diagnostic work is performed at an approved POULAN WEED EATER servicing center CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES POULAN WEED EATER may be liable for damages to other engine components caused by the failure of a warranted part still under wa
13. de diagnosis parts and labor MANUFAC TURER S WARRANTY COVERAGE If any emissions related part on your engine as listed under Emissions Control Warranty Parts List is defective or a defect in the materials or work manship of the engine causes the failure of such an emission related part the part will be repaired or replaced by POULAN WEED EATER OWNER S WARRANTY RESPONSIBILI TIES As the small off road engine owner you are responsible for the performance of the re quired maintenance listed in your instruction manual POULAN WEED EATER recom mends that you retain all receipts covering maintenance on your small off road engine but POULAN WEED EATER cannot deny warran ty solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled maintenance As the small off road engine owner you should be aware that POULAN WEED EATER may deny you warranty cover age if your small off road engine or a part of it has failed due to abuse neglect improper main tenance unapproved modifications or the use of parts not made or approved by the original equipment manufacturer You are responsible for presenting your small off road engine to a POULAN WEED EATER authorized repair center as soon as a problem exists Warranty repairs should be completed in a reasonable amount of time not to exceed 30 days If you have any questions regarding your warranty rights and responsibilities you should contact your ne

17. hield is sharp and can cut you 1 Remove wing nut from shield 2 Insert bracket into slot on shield 3 Pivot shield until bolt passes through hole in bracket 4 Tighten the wing nut securely NOTE If your unit has a plastic cover over the threads on the threaded shaft remove the covering to expose the threads Before installing the trimmer head make sure the dust cup is positioned on the gearbox as shown below SS NE Sigt Wing Nut Shield Gearbox aT R E E NOTE Make sure all parts are properly installed as shown in the illustration before installing the trimmer head 5 Push in locking lever and hold 6 Rotate dust cup until the locking lever falls into one of the grooves Locking Lever 7 Continue to hold in locking lever This will keep the shaft from turning while tighten ing the trimmer head 8 Thread trimmer head onto the shaft in the direction shown on the decal Tighten un til secure 9 Release locking lever ASSEMBLY INFORMATION WEED BLADE NOTE Remove the trimmer head and plas tic shield before attaching the metal shield and installing one of the weed blades To re move the trimmer head push in locking lever and hold Rotate trimmer head until the lock ing lever falls into one of the grooves in the dust cup Continue to hold in locking lever This will keep the shaft from turning while loosening the cutting head To remove the plastic shield loosen and remove wing nut
18. il with 1 gallon of unleaded gasoline DO NOT USE automotive oil or boat oil These oils will cause engine damage When mixing fuel follow instructions printed on con tainer Once oil is added to gasoline shake container momentarily to assure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed Always read and follow Starter Handle 7 Handlebar CHOKE The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to the engine to aid in cold starting Activate the choke by moving the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position After the engine attempts to start move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position Once engine has started move the choke lever to the OFF CHOKE position the safety rules relating to fuel before fueling your unit IMPORTANT Experience indicates that alcohol blended fuels called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during stor age Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage To avoid engine problems empty the fuel sys tem before storage for 30 days or longer Drain the gas tank start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty Use fresh fuel next season Never use engine or carburetor cleaner prod ucts in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur See the STORAGE section for additional in formation HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT e To stop the engine push and release the engine ON STOP switch The switch will aut

20. nd seriously hurt you or others NOTE The dust cup and retaining washer are located on the gearbox shaft and not in the parts bag All other fasteners mentioned in the follow ing assembly steps are in the parts bag Remove the retaining washer from the threaded shaft of the gearbox Leave the dust cup on the shaft 2 Install the blade and the retaining washer over the threaded shaft 3 Make sure the raised part of the retaining washer is facing the gearbox and the raised area fits into the hole in the center of the blade 4 Slide the blade and retaining washer onto the shaft of the gearbox 5 Place the cupped washer onto the shaft Make sure the cupped side of the washer is toward the blade 6 Install the blade nut by threading onto the shaft counterclockwise Gearbox Blade Retaining Washer gt Washer gt lt gt a Nut NOTE Make sure all parts are in place as il lustrated and the blade is sandwiched between the dust cup and the retaining washer There should be no space between the blade and the dust cup or the retaining washer 7 Push in locking lever and hold 8 Rotate blade nut until the locking lever falls into one of the grooves in the dust Locking Lever 9 Continue to hold in locking lever This will keep the shaft from turning while tightening the blade nut 10 Tighten blade nut firmly with a wrench 11 Release locking lever 12 Turn blade by hand If the blade bind

30. w the engine to return to idle speed when not cutting To stop engine e Release the throttle trigger e Push and release the engine ON STOP switch TRIMMER LINE ADVANCE The trimmer line will advance approximately 2 in 5 cm each time the bottom of the trimmer head is tapped on the ground with the engine running at full throttle The most efficient line length is the maximum length allowed by the line limiter Always keep the shield in place when the tool is being oper ated To advance line e Operate the engine at full throttle e Hold the trimmer head parallel to and above the grassy area Tap the bottom of the trimmer head lightly on the ground one time Approximately 2 in 5 cm of line will be advanced with each tap Always tap the trimmer head on a grassy area Tapping on surfaces such as concrete or asphalt can cause excessive wear to the trimmer head If the line is worn down to 2 inches 5 cm or less more than one tap will be required to obtain the most efficient line length A WARNING _ Use only 0 095 2 4 mm diameter line Other sizes of line will not advance properly and can cause serious injury Do not use other materials such as wire string rope etc Wire can break off dur ing cutting and become a dangerous missile that can cause serious injury CUTTING METHODS WARNING Use minimum speed and do not crowd the line when cutting around hard objects rock gravel fence posts e
