EXTENSION SHAFT 5 16 HEX 5 16 LOCKNUT LOWER STEERING HOW TO SET UP YOUR TRACTOR CHEGE BATTERY See Fig 2 Lift seat pan to raised position and open battery box door e this battery is put into service after month and year indicated on label label located between terminals charge battery for minimum of one hour at 6 10 amps See BATTERY in CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES section of this manual for charging instructions ASSEMBLY FIG 2 INSTALL SEAT See Fig 3 Adjust seat before tightening adjustment knob Remove adjustment knob andflat washer securing seat to cardboard packing and set aside for assembly of seat to tractor Pivot seat upward and remove from the cardboard packing Remove the cardboard packing and discard Place seat on seat pan so head of shoulder bolt is positioned over large slotted hole in pan Push down on seat to engage shoulder bolt in slot and pull seat towards rear of tractor Pivot seat and pan forward and assemble adjustment knob and flat washer loosely Do not tighten Lower seat into operating position and sit on seat Slide seat until a comfortable position is reached which allows youto press clutch brake pedal allthe way down Get off seat without moving its adjusted position Raise seat and tighten adjustment knob securely SHOULDER BOLT ADJUSTMENT KNOB NOTE You may now roll or drive your tractor off the skid Follow the appropriate in

CHARGED BATTERY POSITIVE TERMINAL NEGATIVE TERMINAL FIG 28 REPLACING BATTERY See Figs 29 and 30 CAUTION Do not short battery termi nals by allowing a wrench or any other object to contact both terminals at the same time Before connecting battery remove metal bracelets wristwatch bands rings etc Positive terminal must be connected first to prevent sparking from acciden tal grounding Lift seat pan to raised position and open battery box door Disconnect BLACK battery cable firstthen RED battery cable and carefully remove battery from tractor Install new battery with terminals in same position as old battery First connect RED battery cable to positive terminal with hex bolt and keps nut as shown Tighten securely e Connect BLACK grounding cable to negative terminal with remaining hex bolt and keps nut Tighten securely Close battery box door BATTERY BOX DOOR POSITIVE RED NEGATIVE CABLE BLACK CABLE FIG 30 REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULB Raise hood Pullbulb holder out of the hole inthe backside ofthe grill Replace bulb in holder and push bulb holder securely back into the hole in the backside of the grill Close hood INTERLOCKS AND RELAYS Loose or damaged wiring may cause your tractor to run poorly stop running or prevent it from starting e Checkwiring See electrical wiring diagram in the Repair Parts section TO REPLACE F

9. mow in the opposite direction making left hand turns until finished See Fig 9 f grass is extremely tall it should be mowed twice to reduce load and possible fire hazard from dried clip pings Make first cut relatively high the second to the desired height Do mow grass when it is wet Wet grass will plug mower and leave undesirable clumps Allow grassto dry before mowing Always operate engine at full throttle when mowing to assure better mowing performance and proper dis charge of material Regulate ground speed by selecting a low enough gear to give the mower cutting perfor mance as well as the quality of cut desired When operating attachments select a ground speed that will suitthe terrain and give bestperformance of the attachment being used FIG 9 MULCHING MOWING TIPS IMPORTANT FORBEST PERFORMANCE KEEP MOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUILT UP GRASS AND TRASH CLEAN AFTER EACH USE Thespecial mulching blade will recutthe grass clippings many times and reduce them in size so that as they fall onto the lawn they will disperse into the grass and notbe noticed Also the mulched grass will biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients forthe lawn Always mulch with your highest engine blade speed as this will provide the best recutting action of the blades Avoidcutting your lawn when itis wet Wet grass tends to form clumps and interferes with the mulching action The best time to mow your

14. arrow pointing towards carburetor Be sure there are no fuel line leaks and clamps are properly positioned Immediately wipe up any spilled gasoline FILTER CLEANING e Clean engine battery seat finish etc of all foreign matter Keep finished surfaces and wheels free of all gasoline oil etc Protect painted surfaces with automotive type wax We do not recommend using a garden hose to clean your tractor unless the electrical system muffler air filter and carburetor are covered to keep water out Water in engine can result in a shortened engine life SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS CAUTION BEFORE PERFORMING ANY SERVICE OR ADJUSTMENTS Depress clutch brake pedal fully and set parking brake Place gearshift lever in neutral N position Place attachment clutch in DISENGAGED position Turn ignition key OFF and remove key Make sure the blades and all moving parts have completely stopped Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place wire where it cannot come in contact with plug TRACTOR Disconnect front links from deck by removing retainer springs TO REMOVE MOWER See Fig 18 e Raise lift lever to raise suspension arms Slide mower Mower will be easier to remove from the right side of tractor out from under tractor Place attachment clutch in DISENGAGED position e Moveattachmentliftleverforward to lower mower to its lowest position Roll belt off engine pulley Remove s
15. door e Disconnect BLACK battery cable first then RED battery cable and remove battery from tractor Rinse the battery with plain water and e Clean terminals and battery cable ends with wire brush until bright Coatterminals with grease or petroleum jelly Reinstall battery See REPLACING BATTERY in the Service and Adjustment section of this manual V BELTS Check V belts for deterioration and wear after 100 hours and replace if necessary The belts are not adjustable Replace belts if they begin to slip from wear TRANSAXLE COOLING Keeptransaxle free from build up of dirt and chaff which can restrict cooling ENGINE LUBRICATION Only use high quality detergent oil rated with API service classification SF SJ Select the oil s SAE viscosity grade according to your expected operating temperature SAE VISCOSITY GRADES F 20 0 30 32 40 60 80 100 30 20 10 0 10 20 30 40 TEMPERATURE RANGE ANTICIPATED BEFORE NEXT OIL CHANGE FIG 13 NOTE Although multi viscosity oils BW30 10W30 etc improve starting in cold weather these multi viscosity oils will result in increased oil consumption when used above 32 F Check your engine oil level more frequently to avoid possible engine damage from running low on oil Change the oil after every 50 hours of operation or at least once a yearifthe tractor is not used for 50 hours in one year Checkthe

53. or BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE SE ENGINE OIL LEVEL See Fig 14 The engine in your tractor has been shipped from the factory already filled with summer weight oil Check engine oil with tractor on level ground Remove oil fill cap dipstick and wipe clean reinsert the dipstick and screw cap tight wait for a few seconds remove and read oil level If necessary add oil until FULL mark on dipstick is reached Do not overfill For cold weather operation you should change oil for easier starting See OIL VISCOSITY CHART in the Customer Responsibilities section of this manual Tochangeengineoil see the Customer Responsibilities section in this manual ADD GASOLINE Fill fuel tank Use fresh clean regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane Use of leaded gasoline will increase carbon and lead oxide deposits and reduce valve life Do not mix oil with gasoline Purchase fuel in quantities that can be used within 30 days to assure fuel freshness IMPORTANT WHEN OPERATING IN TEMPERATURES BELOW 32 F 0 C USE FRESH CLEAN WINTER GRADE GASOLINE TO HELP INSURE GOOD COLD WEATHER STARTING WARNING Experience indicates that alcohol blended fuels called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage To avoid engine problems the fuel system should be emptied before s
