The illustration shows the master El setting the subordinate or slave setting and the cable select setting Configure the CD RW drive by placing the jumper over the set of pins corresponding to the setting you chose in Step 3 Selecting an IDE port e If you are configuring the CD RW drive as master set the jumper to the master El device setting This is how the drive is set when it is shipped If there is a second device on the IDE port make sure that device is configured as subordinate e If you are configuring the CD RW drive as subordinate set the jumper to the subordinate A device setting Make sure that the other device on the IDE port is configured as master or master with subordinate present e If you are configuring the CD RW drive as cable select set the jumper to the cable select device setting If there is another device on the IDE port make sure that the second device is also configured for cable select Step 5 Mounting the drive in the bay Attention Be sure to use the M3 x 5 mm mounting screws in the option package Using screws that are too long might damage the drive You can mount the CD RW drive horizontally or vertically in the computer If you mount the drive vertically you must secure any CDs you place into the drive before the drive tray is closed or the CD RW drive will not be able to read the CD properly For further instructions on securing your CDs in a ver
2. 5555 33 El El El i El El Reserved Audio out connector This port connects the CD RW drive to a sound adapter Configuration pins These pins are used to set the drive configuration El IDE connector This port connects the CD RW drive to the IDE cable DC power connector This port connects the CD RW drive to the computer power supply cord Installing the drive Follow these steps to install the CD RW drive into your computer Part 1 Installation and usage guide 1 19 Step 1 Opening the computer 1 Turn off the computer and all attached devices 2 Unplug the power cords for the computer and all attached devices 3 Remove the cover from the computer Step 2 Unpacking the drive 1 Before opening the antistatic bag that the drive is packed in touch it to an unpainted metal surface for at least two seconds This drains the static electricity from the package and your body Remove the drive from the bag If you must put the drive down place the antistatic bag on a flat padded surface such as a magazine and place the drive on the antistatic bag Step 3 Selecting an IDE port Newer computers typically have two IDE ports each of which can support two devices Typically the IDE port connected to your hard disk drive is the primary IDE port The other IDE port is the secondary port The IDE port and the cable position that you select determine which configura

Disc at Once Yes Yes Track at Once Yes Yes Session at Once Yes Yes The CD RW drive uses the following methods to write files to CDs e Disc at Once The drive writes to the entire disc in a single pass data cannot be added at a later time e Track at Once The drive copies one track at a time to the disc e Multisession The drive writes several sessions to a disc each session has at least one track Listed below are descriptions of different CD formats that appear in the table CD Digital Audio This format records audio CDs that can be played on audio CD players CD Extra This format records audio and data in a multisession format CD TEXT This format records audio CDs with the album names and song titles encoded CD TEXT information is displayed on CD TEXT compatible CD players and CD ROM drives CD ROM Mode 1 This format is used for most CD ROM applications CD ROM Mode 2 Form 1 and Mode 2 Form 2 or CD ROM Extended Architecture This standard was created for playback of Part 2 Appendixes 2 3 multimedia content CD I Mode 2 Form 1 and Mode 2 Form 2 and CD I Ready This format is used for home entertainment systems CD I Bridge This format records a combination of Kodak Photo CDs and Video CDs that can be played on TV set top players and personal computers Photo CD single and multisession This format records Kodak Photo CDs Video CD This format records CDs that are playable on TV set t

9. 8X 32X CD ReWritable Internal IDE Option Kit 2 The CD might be defective try another CD 3 The CD is not ISO 9660 or High Sierra Group HSG compatible Check with your place of purchase There is no sound from the CD Take the following actions 1 Check that you are using an audio CD and not a data CD 2 Adjust the volume control on the drive See Front view of the drive on page 1 4 to locate the volume control if you have connected headphones to the front of the drive 3 Adjust the sound adapter volume control See the documentation that comes with your sound adapter and audio CD player program 4 Turn off the computer unplug the cables from the electrical outlets for your computer and all attached devices and remove the computer cover Check that the audio signal cable connects the CD RW drive to the sound adapter Your screen displays an error message Take the following actions for two common error messages e CDR 103 The CD in the CD RW drive is not a High Sierra or ISO 9660 format The CD RW drive does not support this format e CDR 101 This message displays when you try to access the CD RW drive before the drive is ready The busy indicator lights when you attempt to access the drive after loading a CD into the CD tray Wait until the busy indicator stops lighting before attempting to read the drive The connectors on the audio cables provided do not fit the connector on your sound adapter Some
10. cable If you use the included IDE cable attach one end of the cable to your system board IDE port or to your IDE adapter and the other end of the IDE cable to the CD RW drive 3 Locate one of the available power cords attached to your computer power source Attach the four pin power cable to the CD RW drive dc power connector Step 7 Completing the hardware installation 1 Be sure that the drive is securely mounted and the connectors are firmly attached 2 Be sure that the cables do not interfere with the computer cover and do not block the power supply fan blades or air flow paths 3 Reinstall the computer cover 4 Reconnect all devices and check any devices that might have become disconnected such as the keyboard mouse and monitor 5 Plug all power cords into electrical outlets 1 22 IBM 4X 8X 32X CD ReWritable Internal IDE Option Kit Step 8 Attaching the faceplates This option package includes two faceplates that conform to the curved design of certain computers If your computer has a curved design you can attach one of the included faceplates so that the front of the CD RW drive matches the exterior cabinet Choose the faceplate that best fits your computer and attach it after you have mounted the CD RW drive in the appropriate bay Note Depending on the exterior design of your computer you may need to attach the faceplate before placing the cover back on your computer Step 9 Updating your computer
11. can remove the CD Tz CD Using the Easy CD Creator DirectCD programs To use the Easy CD Creator DirectCD software insert a blank or partially recorded CD R or CD RW disc this option kit includes a blank CD R disc and a blank CD RW disc into your CD RW drive The Easy CD Creator menu window opens automatically To open DirectCD 1 Click Start gt Programs gt Adaptec DirectCD 2 Click DirectCD Wizard Formatting CDs You must format a blank CD RW disc using DirectCD before you can copy files to the disc To format a CD RW disc with the DirectCD program 1 Insert a blank disc included in the drive The DirectCD Wizard Welcome window opens 2 Click Next twice The Format Disc window opens Attention Formatting completes in about 30 minutes The DirectCD program configures the disc to receive data verifies the integrity of the disc surface and writes DirectCD file system structures to the disc You can do other tasks on your computer while the disc is being formatted 3 Click Next to continue The Name Your Disc window opens 10 Some CDs such as multisession CDs do not require formatting For more information see the Adaptec software online user s guide 1 28 IBM 4X 8X 32X CD ReWritable Internal IDE Option Kit 4 Type the title of your disc in the Name Your Disc window The disc name can be up to 11 characters 5 If you plan to use data compression software with this disc click t
12. configuration After you have completed the hardware installation restart your computer Usually the configuration setup information screen is displayed If this screen is not displayed check your computer documentation for information about accessing the configuration or setup utility program To see the configuration information for most IBM computers press F1 during startup When you have finished reviewing the information save the changes and exit Note Some older computers with one IDE port might not display the CD RW drive information when you review the configuration setup information You still can use the CD RW drive in this situation if you have properly completed the installation Step 10 Installing the optional DOS device driver Note This device driver is not necessary to use the CD RW drive with most operating systems It is only necessary if you plan to use the CD RW drive as a CD ROM drive with DOS or you need to access the CD RW drive using a DOS prompt Be sure to see the READ ME file on the Option Diskette for the latest information about the software on the Option Diskette The JBM Option Diskette contains device drivers that allow you to access the CD RW drive from a DOS prompt To install the JBM Option Diskette device drivers for Windows 98 Windows 95 Windows 3 x OS 2 or DOS Insert the IBM Option Diskette into the diskette drive Type A CDSETUP in a command line and press Ent

14. objects into the drive e Do not stack objects on the drive e Do not remove the drive cover or attempt to service the drive Do not operate the drive under any of the following conditions A High temperature high humidity or direct sunlight Excessive vibration sudden shock or inclined surface Excessive dust Loading a CD To load a CD into a horizontally mounted CD RW drive follow these steps A 1 Press the Eject Load button The tray slides out of the drive 2 Insert the CD into the loading tray with the label facing up 3 Close the loading tray by pressing the Eject Load button or by gently pushing the tray in Attention Do not force the tray to open do not insert foreign objects into the CD tray If your tray does not open when you press the Eject Load button see Manually ejecting a CD on page 1 13 for information on manual ejection Part 1 Installation and usage guide 1 11 To load a CD into a vertically mounted CD RW drive follow these steps 1 Press the Eject Load button 2 Look at the illustrations and compare them to your loading tray e If your loading tray looks like the left illustration insert the CD carefully so that the edges of the CD are underneath the tabs on the loading tray These plastic tabs cover the edges of the CD and hold it in place The tabs are attached to the tray itself and cannot be moved e If your l
15. one CD to another CD To copy a commercial CD you must either own the copyright or obtain permission from the copyright owner If you do not own the copyright or do not have permission to copy from the copyright owner you might be violating copyright law and might be subject to payment of damages or other remedies For more information on copyright law consult your legal advisor To back up copy a CD using your CD RW drive 1 Click Start gt Programs gt Adaptec Easy CD Creator gt Features 2 Click CD Copier The CD Copier window will open 3 Click the Source and Destination tab if it is not on top 4 In the Copy From section select the source drive from the scrolldown box Note This is the drive containing the CD you want to copy 5 In the Record To section select the CD RW drive from the scrolldown box Be sure that there is a blank CD R or CD RW disc in the CD RW drive 6 On the Advanced tab you can choose to test the CD for the best possible recording speed You can also change the number of copies made or choose to have the CD copied to your hard disk before copying it to the blank CD These selections will increase the time it takes to copy the CD 7 When you are finished choosing the settings place the CD you are going to copy into the source drive 8 Click Copy to start copying your CD 1 30 IBM 4X 8X 32X CD ReWritable Internal IDE Option Kit Product registration Thank you for purchasi
16. present or not usable This parameter instructs the computer to display a summary of RAM allocation and expanded memory usage at startup time L drive letter K 2 16 This parameter specifies the drive letter to be assigned to the first CD ROM drive Do not assign a letter already used by an existing drive or your computer will not be able to access the CD ROM drive For example you might use C MSCDEX EXE D IBMCD100 L F Normally the CD ROM drive is assigned to the next available drive letter after devices such as diskette drives and hard disk drives Therefore you use this option only if you wish to assign a drive letter beyond the last letter previously allocated by DOS This parameter instructs MSCDEX EXE to use Kanji Japanese file structures if present rather than the default alphanumeric file structures IBM 4X 8X 32X CD ReWritable Internal IDE Option Kit IS This parameter instructs MSCDEX EXE to allow networked computers to share CD ROM drives Conserving DOS conventional memory If the CD ROM drive support software is loaded in DOS conventional memory below 640 KB RAM there might be insufficient memory to run some DOS applications The CDSETUP program attempts to load the IDE CD ROM drive device driver and MSCDEX into upper memory when possible to avoid this problem For more information on techniques to conserve conventional memory refer to the following topics in the documentation that comes with you

BM You may be required to present proof of purchase IBM or your reseller provides certain types of repair and exchange service either at your location or at a service center to keep Machines in or restore them to conformance with their Specifications IBM or your reseller will inform you of the available types of service for a Machine based on its country of installation IBM may repair the failing Machine or exchange it at its discretion When warranty service involves the exchange of a Machine or part the item IBM or your reseller replaces becomes its property and the replacement becomes yours You represent that all removed items are genuine and unaltered The replacement may not be new but will be in good working order and at least functionally equivalent to the item replaced The replacement assumes the warranty service status of the replaced item Any feature conversion or upgrade IBM or your reseller services must be installed on a Machine which is 1 for certain Machines the designated serial numbered Machine and 2 at an engineering change level compatible with the feature conversion or upgrade Many features conversions or upgrades involve the removal of parts and their return to IBM part that replaces a removed part will assume the warranty service status of the removed part Before IBM or your reseller exchanges a Machine or part you agree to remove all features parts options alterations and attachments not under

87. tion with the device driver IBMIDECD SYS to enable your computer to read CDs as DOS formatted disks MSCDEX is designed for DOS and Windows The CDSETUP program automatically adds an MSCDEX statement to your AUTOEXEC BAT file You can modify the default MSCDEX parameters to customize your installation This section explains the function of each parameter text editor can be used to modify the MSCDEX statement in your AUTOEXEC BAT file The following is the syntax of the MSCDEX EXE entry in AUTOEXEC BAT where drive path MSCDEX EXE specifies the location drive and directory of the MSCDEX EXE file drive path MSCDEX EXE D device name M n E V L drive letter UK S Do not truncate the actual device driver entry Place the complete entry on one line in the AUTOEXEC BAT file Use the following options to configure the device driver D device name This parameter specifies the name of the CD ROM drive eight characters maximum This name must be identical to the device name specified in the device driver in the CONFIG SYS file For example C MSCDEX EXE D IBMCD100 You might support multiple CD ROM drives of different types by installing each of their device drivers naming them different names and placing a D device name in the MSCDEX line for each drive For example if you wanted to support an IBM IDE CD ROM drive and an IBM SCSI CD ROM drive your CONFIG SYS file might have these statements DEVIC
88. tray does not open when you press the Eject Load button see Manually ejecting a CD on page 1 13 for information on manual ejection 1 26 IBM 4X 8X 32X CD ReWritable Internal IDE Option Kit To load a CD into a vertically mounted CD RW drive follow these steps 1 Press the Eject Load button 2 Look at the illustrations and compare them to your loading tray e If your loading tray looks like the left illustration insert the CD carefully so that the edges of the CD are underneath the tabs on the loading tray These plastic tabs cover the edges of the CD and hold it in place The tabs are attached to the tray itself and cannot be moved e If your loading tray looks like the right illustration insert the CD into the tray and gently push the movable tab forward to hold the CD in place 3 Close the loading tray by pressing the Eject Load button or by gently pushing the tray in Part 1 Installation and usage guide 1 27 Manually ejecting a CD If you press the Eject Load button and the tray does not slide out turn off the computer and straighten a large paper clip to form a tool as shown in the illustration The straightened end must extend at least 45 mm 1 8 in Insert the extended end into the manual eject hole on the front of the drive see Front view of the drive on page 1 4 Push the paper clip into the hole until the tray opens Gently pull out the tray until you
89. u are unable to read from the CD or a drive letter is not assigned by MSCDEX go to the next step Turn off the computer unplug the cables from the electrical outlets for your computer and all attached devices and remove the computer cover Disconnect the IDE and power cable for all IDE devices except the CD RW drive Configure the CD RW drive as a master and connect it to the last IDE connector on the primary IDE port Reinstall the computer cover Reconnect all devices then plug the power cords into electrical outlets Place the System Diskette in the diskette drive and a data CD in the CD RW drive Restart the computer Attempt to read from the CD by typing dir C The CD RW drive is drive C because it is the only device connected to the IDE port e the computer is able to read the CD a conflict probably exists with one of the devices that was installed on your computer You need to resolve this device driver conflict Check the configuration jumper settings for the other devices or refer to your device documentation e If you are unable to access the CD you might have a hardware problem If the CD RW drive still does not read from the data CD the CD RW drive might be defective Go to Appendix D Help and service information on page 2 20 The CD cannot be read Take the following actions 1 The CD might be dirty clean it as described in Handling and caring for a CD on page 1 10 2 10 IBM 4X
