If the engine falls to start release the switch and wait 10 seconds before operating the starter again When the engine starts allow the engine switch to return to the ON position ENGINE SWITCH Type with electric starter and oil alert system 1 5 7 OPERATION 1 As the engine warms up gradually move the choke lever to the OPEN position CHOKE LEVER 2 Position the throttle lever for the desired engine speed THROTTLE LEVER 16 Oil Alert System The Oil Alert system is designed to prevent engine damage caused by an insufficient amount of oil in the crankcase Before the oil level in the crankcase can fall below a safe limit the Oil Alert system will automatical ly shut down the engine the engine switch will remain in the ON position If the Oil Alert system shuts down the engine the Oil Alert lamp will flash when you operate the starter and the engine will not run If this occurs add engine oil page 7 OIL ALERT LAMP HONDA OIL ALERT LAMP ENGINE SWITCH CIRCUIT BREAKER ENGINE SWITCH without electric starter with electric starter Circuit Breaker for electric starter The circuit breaker protects the battery charging circuit A short circuit or a battery connected in reverse polarity will trip the circuit breaker The green indicator inside the circuit breaker will pop out to show that the circuit breaker has switched off If this occurs determi
5. and in good condi tion Clean or replace the element if necessary page 24 2 Check oil level and condition OIL LEVEL 10 4 FUEL Your engine is designed to use any gasoline that has a pump octane number 8 5 of 86 or higher or that has a research oc tane number of 91 or higher Gasoline pumps at service station normally display the pump octane number We recommend that you use unleaded fuel because it produces fewer engine and spark plug deposits and extends the life of exhaust system components Never use stale or contaminated gasoline or an oil gasoline mixture Avoid getting dirt dust or water in the fuel tank Use of a lower octane gasoline can cause persistent pinging or heavy spark knock a metallic rapp noise which if severe can lead to engine damage If spark knock or pinging occurs at a steady engine speed under normal load change brands of gasoline If spark knock or pinging persists consult your authorized Honda dealer Failure to do so is con sidered misuse and damage caused by misuse is not covered by Honda s Limited Warranty Occasionally you may experience light spark knock while operating under heavy loads This is no cause for concern it simply means your engine is operating efficiently AWARNING e Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive under certain conditions e Refuel in a well ventilated area with the engine stopped Do not smoke or al

11. ctrode 26 4 Check that the spark plug washer is in good condition and thread the spark plug in by hand to prevent cross threading 5 After the spark plug is seated tighten with a spark plug wrench to com press the washer When installing a new spark plug tighten 1 2 turn after the spark plug seats to compress the washer When reinstalling a used spark plug tighten 1 8 1 4 turn after the spark plug seats to compress the washer The spark plug must be securely tightened An improperly tightened spark plug can become very hot and may damage the engine 1 i 27 5 Spark arrester maintenance optional part If the engine has been running the muffler will be very hot Allow it to cool before proceeding 1 Remove the two 8 mm nuts 1 and the muffler assembly Remove the three 4 mm screws 2 and remove the exhaust deflector Remove the eight 5 mm screws 4 and remove the muffler protector 5 from the muffler 6 Remove the 4 mm screw 7 and remove the spark arrester 8 from the muffler Co JA 5 Use a brush to remove carbon deposits from the spark arrester screen NOTICE Be careful not to damage the spark arrester screen NOTE The spark arrester must be free of breaks and holes Replace if necessary 6 Install a new muffler gasket 9 Install the spark arrester and the muffler in the reverse order of disassembly 28 Carburetor adju

20. ne the cause of the problem and correct it before resetting the circuit breaker Push the circuit breaker button to reset 17 M 8 STOPPING THE ENGINE To stop the engine in an emergency turn the engine switch to the OFF position Under normal conditions use the following procedure 1 Move the throttle lever fully to the right THROTTLE LEVER 2 Turn the engine switch to the OFF position ENGINE SWITCH Type with electric starter and oil alert system 18 FUEL VALVE 1 1 High altitude operation At high altitude the standard carburetor air fuel mixture will be excessive ly rich Performance will decrease and fuel consumption will increase High altitude performance can be improved by installing a smaller diameter main fuel jet in the carburetor and readjusting the pilot screw If you always operate the engine at altitudes higher than 6 000 feet above sea level have your authorized Honda Engine dealer perform these carburetor modifications Even with suitable carburetor jetting engine horsepower will decrease proximately 3 5 for each 1 000 foot increase in altitude The effect of altitude on horsepower will be greater than this if no carburetor modifica tion is made Operation of the engine at an altitude lower than the carburetor is jetted for may result in reduced performance overheating and serious engine damage caused by an excessively lea
