2. cord into a working AC outlet 5 Turn on the Switch and all attached devices The system should power up in its default state with all of the Switch s outputs displaying input 1 If it does the system should be ready for continuous operation If it doesn t check the front panel LEDs to make sure the Switch is ON check your devices and make sure they re ON and check your cabling and make sure it s all properly connected If everything seems like it should work but the system still doesn t call Black Box Technical Support SERVSWITCH BRAND MATRIX VIDEO SWITCH 4 Operation 4 1 The Switch s LEDs The LEDs on the ServSwitch Brand Matrix Video Switch s front panel shown in Figure 4 1 indicate which of the Switch s outputs are displaying the video from which inputs and which outputs have been blanked and aren t showing anything The inputs are the numbered rows labeled Video Source the outputs are the columns labeled with numbered monitor icons For output 2 for example you ll be able to look at the column of four LEDs labeled with monitor icon 2 If the bottom LED is lit output 2 is receiving video from input 4 and so on If none of the LEDs are lit output 2 has been blanked See Section 4 2 ServSwitch ravo Matrix Video Switch Figure 4 1 The Switch s front panel LEDs CHAPTER 4 Operation 4 2 Switching Manually With the Keypad To switch a given output to display a given input o

Welcome to the ServSwitch Family Thank you for purchasing a BLACK BOX ServSwitch Brand video switch We appreciate your business and we think you ll appreciate the many ways that your new video switch will save you money time and effort k Our ServSwitch family is all about breaking away from the traditional expensive model of computer management and display You know the one size fits all even if it doesn t model that says One dedicated computer gets one dedicated monitor or user station no more no less Why not a single user station monitor keyboard and mouse for multiple computers even computers of different platforms Why not a pair of user stations each of which can control multiple computers Why not many monitors or user stations for the same computer Why not display or access any of your computers anywhere in the world with any of your monitors or user stations With our ServSwitch products there s no reason why not We carry a broad line of robust solutions for all these applications e Do you have just two PCs and need an economical alternative to keeping two monitors keyboards and mice on your desk Or do you need to share dozens of computers including a mix of IBM PC RS 6000 Apple Macintosh Sun Microsystems and SGI compatibles among multiple users with different access levels e Do you have to send video from one computer to two different local monitors Or do you need to
5. ce Enter This will start with output 1 on input 1 output 2 on input 2 output 3 on input 3 and output 4 on input 4 Exiting Scan Mode To exit the scan mode hit the Esc key on the keypad and this will cancel all scanning whether it be individual scan mode or all scan mode If the all scan command has been issued then scanning can be canceled by selecting any input from any output via the keypad or by selecting an individual scan When individual scan mode is running on a channel the way to cancel that specific channels scan mode is to select an input for that channel from the keypad Changing the Scan Timing The time between transitions in scan mode is user definable factory default is 10 seconds Connect the ACLO404A to a PC using a crossover DB9 serial cable Start up Hyper Terminal with the settings 1200 8 none 1 none To program the scan time press PPP followed by the A through G corresponding to periods shown below A 5 seconds B 10 seconds C 1 minute D 2 minutes E 3 minutes F 4 minutes G 5 minutes 16
6. d will be aborted and the Switch will reset itself Any invalid or unexpected code will also cause the command to be aborted and the Switch to reset itself There is a special set of codes that can be sent by or through the serial device that will cause the Switch to respond with status values these can be very useful in automated systems e Send the Switch an ASCII 0 zero 30 hex to have it return the revision level of its firmware an ASCII 1 31 hex for instance for firmware version 1 e Send the Switch an ASCII 1 2 3 or 4 31 hex through 34 hex respectively to have it return the status of the corresponding output channel It will reply with ASCII 1 2 3 or 4 31 hex through 34 hex to indicate that that output is switched to input 1 2 3 or 4 respectively or it will reply with ASCII 0 zero 30 hex to indicate that that output is blanked 5 Troubleshooting 5 1 Calling Black Box If you determine that your ServSwitch Brand Matrix Video Switch is malfunctioning do not attempt to alter or repair the unit It contains no user serviceable parts Contact Black Box Technical Support at 724 746 5500 Before you do make a record of the history of the problem We will be able to provide more efficient and accurate assistance if you have a complete description including e the nature and duration of the problem e when the problem occurs e the comp

8. have to worry about people seeing things you don t want them to e Its front panel LEDs show you right away which video inputs are going to which outputs e To top it off it can be operated by pressing a couple of buttons so anybody can use it without having to be extensively trained SERVSWITCH BRAND MATRIX VIDEO SWITCH 3 Installation To set up your ServSwitch Brand Matrix Video Switch system take these steps 1 Making sure that the Switch is powered off find its input ports These are the top row of HD15 connectors on its rear panel shown in Figure 3 1 labeled CPU 1 through CPU 4 Run cabling from these ports to the video output ports of the PC CPUs or other devices that will be providing the Switch s video input If all of these input devices are transmitting VGA SVGA XGA type video signals on HD15 female connectors you can use standard VGA video extension cables such as our product code EVNPS05 MM Keep in mind that the length of any of these cables plus the length of any of your monitor output cables see step 2 should not be more more than 150 ft 45 m If any of your input devices transmit some other type of video signal and or use some other type of video connector you might need special cables or adapters call Black Box Technical Support CPU 1 CPU 2 CPU3 CPU 4 RS 232 Eo oo oo oo o o FER GED o oo o fe POWER Figure 3 1 The Switch s rear panel connectors 2 The Sw
9. itch s output ports are the bottom row of HD15 female connectors labeled with numbered monitor icons If all of your output devices are standard VGA or multisync monitors with HD15 male connectors on their video cables you can plug them directly into these ports if they ll be placed nearby or run video extension cables to them such as our product code EVNPS05 MF if they ll be some distance away Keep in mind that the length of any of these cables plus the length of any of your CPU input cables see step 1 should not be more more than 150 ft 45 m If any of your output devices are designed to receive a non VGA video signal and or use a different type of video connector you might need special cables or adapters call Black Box Technical Support CHAPTER 3 Installation 3 If you ll be using the included keypad to control the Switch plug it into the Switch s DB9 male RS 232 port If you ll be using a PC or some other RS 232 DTE device with a DB9 male serial port to control the Switch run DB9 null modem cable such as our product code EYN257H FF from the Switch to that device If you ll be using an RS 232 device that s not a DTE or has some other type of serial connector call Black Box Technical Support 4 Plug the output cord of the Switch s power supply into the Switch s 5 pin DIN female power inlet Plug one end of the power supply s input cord into the transformer s IEC 320 male inlet plug the other end of the input
10. of as many as four video sources such as PCs in order to display or capture that output at up to four video destinations such as monitors Once you attach all your devices you can hook the Switch to the included keypad for manual control or to a PC for software controlled sensing and switching The Switch s features include e With its large bandwidth it can handle even very high resolutions and refresh rates up to 1600 x 1280 pixels at up to 85 Hz e It includes a serial keypad so it s ready to do manual switching almost right out of the box you do have to attach the keypad to the Switch first e Because it has a universal power supply you can plug it in almost anywhere if you have the right input cord And it is small and light enough to take almost anywhere e It s primarily designed to carry VGA SVGA video but it can handle separate horizontal and vertical sync composite sync and sync on green so with the right kinds of cables or adapters it can accept all sorts of video from all sorts of devices e All of its input and output signals are buffered so you ll get the sharpest possible images e It can drive video signals as far as 150 ft 45 m end to end so it s ideal for use in auditoriums conference halls and similar spaces e You can use it in many types of remote or automated systems because it can be controlled from most RS 232 source devices e Each of its outputs can be blanked so you don t
11. onents involved in the problem that is what type of cable makes and models of computers input devices makes and models of monitor output devices etc e any particular application that when used appears to create the problem or make it worse and e the results of any testing you ve already done 5 2 Shipping and Packaging If you need to transport or ship your Switch e Package it carefully We recommend that you use the original container e Before you ship the unit back to Black Box for repair or return contact us to get a Return Authorization RA number ADDENDUM Advanced Features Scan Mode The ACLO404A has a Scan Mode whereby each output automatically cycles through and displays all inputs at a customer specified rate Activating the Scan Mode There are 2 types of scan modes individual scan and all scan To enter individual scan mode a simple key sequence is entered on the keypad Output Channel that you want to scan Enter For example to scan output 1 press o r Enter This will begin scanning output it cycles through the inputs one at a time Each of the 4 output channels can be scanning independently of one another This means you can start scanning on one channel and then at some time later start scanning on another channel Both channels will now be scanning independent of one another All scanning channels will scan at the same rate Enter all scan mode by key sequen
