OUT OF THE REACH OF CHIL DREN The battery is located under panel A Remove the panel to access the bat tery See page 6 8 To charge the battery Have a Yamaha dealer charge the bat tery as soon as possible if it seems to have discharged Keep in mind that the battery tends to discharge more quickly if the vehicle is equipped with optional electrical accessories ECA16520 NOTICE To charge a VRLA Valve Regulated Lead Acid battery a special con stant voltage battery charger is re quired Using a conventional battery charger will damage the battery If you do not have access to a constant volt age battery charger have a Yamaha dealer charge your battery To store the battery 1 If the vehicle will not be used for more than one month remove the battery fully charge it and then place it in a cool dry place NOTICE When removing the bat tery be sure the key is turned to OFF then disconnect the negative lead before disconnect ing the positive lead tecat6302 Ifthe battery will be stored for more than two months check it at least once a month and fully charge it if necessary Fully charge the battery before in stalling it After installing the battery make sure that the battery leads are prop erly connected to the battery ter minals Turn the key from ON to OFF three times in three second inter vals to initialize the idle speed con trol system P

62. rush but never apply such prod ucts onto seals gaskets and wheel 7 1 axles Always rinse the dirt and degreaser off with water Cleaning ECA10783 NOTICE e Avoid using strong acidic wheel cleaners especially on spoked wheels If such products are used on hard to remove dirt do not leave the cleaner on the affected area any longer than instructed Also thoroughly rinse the area off with water immediately dry it and then apply a corrosion pro tection spray e Improper cleaning can damage plastic parts such as cowlings panels windshields headlight lenses meter lenses etc and the mufflers Use only a soft clean cloth or sponge with water to clean plastic However if the plastic parts cannot be thor oughly cleaned with water di luted mild detergent with water may be used Be sure to rinse off any detergent residue using plenty of water as it is harmful to plastic parts Do not use any harsh chemical products on plastic parts Be sure to avoid using cloths or sponges which have been in contact with strong or abrasive cleaning prod ucts solvent or thinner fuel gasoline rust removers or in hibitors brake fluid antifreeze or electrolyte Do not use high pressure wash ers or steam jet cleaners since they cause water seepage and deterioration in the following ar eas seals of wheel and swingarm bearings fork and brakes electric components couplers connectors instru ments switche

64. sassemble the brake To check the brake pad wear check the 6 19 wear indicator groove If a brake pad has worn to the point that the wear indicator groove has almost disappeared have a Yamaha dealer replace the brake pads as a set EAU22540 Rear brake shoes 1 Wear indicator 2 Wear limit line The rear brake is provided with a wear indicator which allows you to check the brake shoe wear without having to dis assemble the brake To check the brake shoe wear check the position of the wear indicator while applying the brake If a brake shoe has worn to the point that the wear indicator reaches the wear limit line have a Yamaha dealer replace the brake shoes as a set PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT EAU32344 Checking the brake fluid level 1 Minimum level mark Insufficient brake fluid may allow air to enter the brake system possibly caus ing it to become ineffective Before riding check that the brake fluid is above the minimum level mark and replenish if necessary A low brake fluid level may indicate worn brake pads and or brake system leakage If the brake fluid level is low be sure to check the brake pads for wear and the brake sys tem for leakage 6 20 Observe these precautions When checking the fluid level make sure that the top of the master cyl inder is level by turning the handle bars e Use only the recommended quality brake fluid otherwise the rubber seals
