14. amage is found poor pump via a burnt fuel pump ground terminal Although damage is not extreme it is significant performance will occur due to this bad connection The vehicle s electrical connector must be replaced or repeat failures will occur enough to create repeat failures Examine the external strainer on the fuel module Look for signs of dirt and or rust contamination Any form of dirt All three modules failed due to a burnt C terminal the ground path for the fuel pump Eye Part H2 External strainers of both parts show discoloration but very little rust contamination On both parts rust was found inside the bucket and on the pump strainer found In the strainer should immediately trigger an inspection of the fuel tank A tank cleaning or replacement should be conducted based on what is found It is Important to understand how contamination entered the fuel tank so preventative action can be taken to eliminate future occurrences Areas like the tank vent system should be checked to determine if contaminants entered through this area If determined contaminants were pumped into the tank or intentionally added It s important to change fuel supplies or add a locking gas cap to the vehicle Third Checkpoint Visually examine the fuel module bucket and internal strainer Depending on the module design you may be able to view the module bucket through an opening in the fuel module design If no

17. ell known engine management parts manufacturer The ignition coil is for 2003 2009 GM mid size passenger cars and light trucks with in line six five and four cylinder engines with 1 9 million vehicles in operation VIO footprint Initial visual inspection revealed a well crafted good looking reproduction of the original part However as with the MAP sensor discussed above looks can be deceiving Six of these competitive coils were analyzed and compared to OE specifications including 233 hours of thermal cycling voltage output and make voltage limitation testing As part of the testing process six Delphi coils for the exact same application were tested alongside the competitor coils The results Delphi s coils met all of the OE specifications operating parameters and successfully completed the 233 hours of durability testing The competitor All six of the competitor coils failed to complete the 233 hour test Two of the coils actually failed the bench testing before even beginning the thermal cycle Connector Key Connector Heads ECM Interface I C Chip Delphi PS10075 19npoJg 101139du109 test Further analysis revealed the two coils had internal failures Three other coils failed after 72 hours and one coil lasted only 96 hours A failure in this case means the coils had no output or very low output insufficient to create a spark at the spark plug A typical ignition coil operates at 25 000 volts
18. et the standards originally developed and established Unfortunately this is not always true with other aftermarket manufacturers While some have introduced engine Ignition and emission control system replacement parts such as Manifold Absolute Pressure MAP sensors and ignition coils into the market these products can be deficient in performance or as in one case outright frauds resulting in non functioning parts These imitation parts can potentially lead to considerable engine damage and impact a vehicles ability to operate safely At least the use of these parts can have a detrimental effect on fuel economy and overall vehicle operation costs Automotive parts distributors part stores and professional technicians need to be aware not all engine management system parts are created equal Many aftermarket replacement parts are high quality performing at or near OEM performance specifications But how do you identify what replacement parts you re getting Below are two examples of aftermarket engine management parts which do not meet OE specifications and reasons why they may not be the best choice The first is a MAP sensor for popular General Motors GM mid size passenger car and light truck V6 applications This part is marketed by an off shore manufacturer and has a list price approximately 75 below established national brands On an initial visual examination the part appears to be all right On closer examinatio

35. t the bucket may have to be removed from the fuel module through Contamination caused by rusted fuel lines This vehicle received two fuel modules in less than a week The reported issue was noisy operation and erratic fuel pressure Both modules were analyzed and the fuel module bucket and internal strainer were heavily contaminated with rust The external Strainers showed some discoloration but had significantly less rust in them The Cause was a rusted return fuel line disassembly What Is important to note is what has accumulated in the fuel module bucket and internal pump strainer Contaminants entering the fuel module bucket are indefinitely trapped so the bucket will contain a contamination history of the fuel module A significant amount of contamination found in the bucket and internal strainer is a sure sign that the part failed due to contamination This indicates that there are other issues on the vehicle that need repair prior to the installation of a new fuel module Analysis of Actual Failures Above are actual scenarios showing failed modules Since these issues were not identified during the initial diagnosis the results were repeat failures On closer inspection all the needed repairs could have been made the first time More important a customer comeback would have been avoided Fuel Pump Installation Checklist Tips for successtul installations and increased customer Satisfaction
