3. 6 Assemble the AM Loop Antenna supplied with the unit as shown below Connect it to the AM screw terminals 7 Connect an FM antenna to the FM 75 ohm connection The FMantenna may bean external roof antenna an inside powered or wire lead antenna ora connection from a cable TVsystem Note that if the antenna or connection uses 300 ohm twin lead cable you must use the 300 ohm to 75 ohm adapter supplied with the unit to make the connection Speaker and Output Connections To assure that all the audio signals are carried to your speakers without loss of clarity or resolution we suggest that you use high quality speaker cable Many brands of cable are available and the choice of cable may be influenced by the distance between your speakers and this receiver the type of speakers you use personal preferences and other factors Your dealer or installer is a valuable resource to consult in selecting the proper cable Regardless of the brand of cable selected we recommend that you use a cable con structed of fine multistrand copper with a gauge of 14 or smaller Remember that in specifying cable the lower the number the thicker the cable Cable with a gauge of 16 may be used for short runs of less than ten feet We do not recommend that you use cables with an ANG equivalent of 18 or higher due to the power loss and degradation in performance that will occur Cables that are run inside walls should have t

7. triangle The distance between each speaker and the listener should be identical For example if the speakers are 2 5 meters from one another each of the speakers should optimally be placed so that they are also 2 5 meters from the lis tener It is also desirable to place speakers so that their tweeters or high frequency drivers are aimed at ear height when you are seated in the listening position 16 Right Front Speaker A good starting point for speaker place ment is to make the distance between the two speakers and the distance between either speaker and the listener is identical To optimize the soundfidld or to suit your listening room environment you may find that some experimentation is required to find the correct location Ideally pans from left to right across the front of the room should sound smooth and instruments should appear to be coming from the proper location to where they would be placed in an orchestra The placement of subwoofers should be done as suggested in the manufacturer s instructions In general subwoofers often produce best results when they are placed in the comer of a room but optimal place ment will vary widely depending on room size the subwoofer type and the placement of rugs and funiture in room Finally when all connections are com plete plug the power cord into a non switched 120 volt AC wall outlet You re ready to enjoy the HK3270 Basic Operation Once y

Connect the main speakers to the Speaker 1 terminals 2 Connect a second set of speakers or speakers that are in a second room location to the Speaker 2 terminals y 15 3 When an optional powered subwoofer is used connect the outputs of the Subwoofer Out jacks to the line level inputs of the subwoofer When the subwoofer s amplifier has stereo inputs run interconnects from both jacks When the subwoofer has a mono input only usethe bottom jack for the connection When a passive subwoofer is used these connections will be made to the optional amplifier that powers the subwoofer System and Power Connections The HK3270 is designed for flexible use with extemal control components and power amplifiers These connections are easy to make during an initial installa tion or at a later date should you choose to upgrade your system Remote Control Extension If the receiver is placed behind a solid or smoked glass cabinet door the obstruc tion may prevent the remote sensor from receiving commands In this event an optional remote sensor may be used Connect the output of the remote sensor to the Remote Cont In jack If other components are also prevented from receiving remote commands only one sensor is needed They may use this unit s sensor or a remote eye by running a connection from the Remote Cont Out jack to the Remote In jack on Harman Kardon or other compatible equipment External Audio Pow

11. d as favorite station presets and recalled from a 30 position memory Station Selection 1 Press the AM or FM 0 buttons on the front panel or on the remote 9 to select the tuner as an input 2 Press these buttons again at any time to switch between AM and FM 3 To select stations press and briefly hold the Tuning button and the tuner will search for the next highest or lowest frequency station that has an acceptable signal To tune to the next station press the button again Tap the Tuning button F4 to advance one frequency increment at a time or press and hold it to locate a specific station When the TUNED indicator illuminates the station is properly tuned and should be heard with clarity Operation 18 4 Stations may also be tuned directly by pressing the Direct button e and then pressing the Numeric Keys 2 that correspond to the station s frequency The desired station will automatically be tuned NOTE When the FM reception of a station is weak audio quality will be increased by switching to Mono mode by pressing the FM Mode button Ef until the STEREO indicator goes out Preset Tuning Up to 30 stations may be stored in the 2705 memory for easy recall using the front panel controls or the remote To enter a station to the memory first tune the station using the steps outlined above Then 1 Press the Memory button iri on the remote Note that MEMO and PRESET indicators wi

15. er m Preamp and Subwoofer Outputs for Use with External Power Amplifiers m Phono Input Section m Tuner with Data Program Information Displays Important Safety Information Verify Line Voltage Before Use Your HK3270 has been designed for use with 120 volt AC current Connection to a linevoltage other than that for which it isintended can create a safety and fire hazard and may damage the unit If you have any questions about the volt age requirements for your specific model or about the line voltage in your area contact your selling dealer before plug ging the unit into a wall outlet Do Not Use Extension Cords To avoid safety hazards use only the power cord attached to your unit We do not recommend that extension cords be used with this product As with all electri cal devices do not run power cords under rugs or carpets or place heavy objects on them Damaged power cords should be replaced immediately with cords meeting factory specifications Handle the AC Power Cord Gently When disconnecting the power cord from an AC outlet always pull the plug never pull the cord If you do not intend to use theunit for any considerable length of time disconnect the plug from the AC outlet Do Not Open the Cabinet There are no user serviceable compo nents inside this product Opening the cabinet may present a shock hazard and any modification to the product will void your guarantee If water or any metal object suc
16. er Amplifier Connections If desired an optional external amplifier may be used in place of the HK3270 s intemal power amplifier To connect an external power amplifier first remove the jumper pins that connect the Preamp Out and Main In jacks on the rear panel Keep the jumpers in a safe place should they be needed at a later time Using high quality audio interconnect cables connect the Preamp Out jacks to theinput jacks on your power amplifier Make certain to match the right output to the right input and the left output to the left input Note that when an extemal power ampli fier is used no special adjustments are required All volume and other control adjustments are made using the standard front panel or remote controls AC Power Connections The Accessory Outlets receive power as long as the Main Power Switch El is in the ON position Power will still be supplied to these out lets even when the HK3270 isin the Standby mode In order to remove power to these outlets the unit must be tumed off by pressing the Main Power Switch 50 that it is in the OFF position Installation and Connections Speaker Placement For optimal listening enjoyment and for soundfield reproduction that best re creates the original recording itis good practice to place the speakers so that they form a triangle with the speakers at the front of the room and the preferred listening spot at the third point of the

18. f the tuned FM station See page 15 for more information Tuning Up Down When the tuner is in use these buttons will tune up or down through the selected frequency band A brief 1 2 second press of the button will manually tune to the next frequency increment while pressing and holding the button for a longer period will automatically tune to the next station with a signal strong enough for acceptable reception These buttons will also control Fast Forward and Fast Reverse or Rewind for compatible Harman Kardon compact disc players changers and cassette tape decks 8 Direct Press this button to select a radio station by entering its fre quency using the Numeric Keys iz See page 15 for more information Numeric Keys These buttons Serve as a ten button numeric key pad to enter tuner preset positions e Auto Preset When the tuner FM band have been selected this button may be used to automatically program the tuner presets for all active stations To start the auto pre set scan press and hold the button Note that the MEMO and PRESET indi cators will flash After a few seconds the tuner will start to look for active stations as shown by increasing fre quency numbers in the Information Display Release the button and note that the tuner will briefly stop at each active station and add a preset num ber to the memory If the FM tuner found less the 30 FM stations with acceptable si
19. gnal strength the Auto Preset tuning will scan two more cycles or until the remaining vacant preset memory spaces have been filled with those found in the first scan The scan will stop when all 30 preset memory spaces have been filled or when three scans through the band have been completed G Secondary Control Cover This sliding cover normally is in the up position so that it hides the sec ondary controls To access these controls place your thumb on the small recessed area at the top cen ter of the control and gently press the cover down and towards you Clear Button This button is used to clear preset memory information for the HK3270 s tuner See pages 15 16 for more information on tuner presets Memory Press this button to open a memory position that stores a preset location for the HK3270 s tuner See pages 15 16 for more information on tuner presets Installation and Connections System Installation After unpacking the unit and placing it 0n a solid surface capable of supporting its weight you will need to make the connections to your audio and video equipment These steps need to be done only when the receiver is first installed or when a change is made to the input source equipment Audio Equipment Connections Werecommend that you use high quality interconnect cables when making connec tions to source equipment and recorders to preserve the quality of the signals When making connections t
20. h as a paper clip wire or staple accidentally falls inside the unit disconnect it from the AC power source immediately and consult an authorized service station HK3270 120 volt Rev B Safety Information 5 CATV or Antenna Grounding If an outside antenna or cable system is connected to this product be certain that itis grounded so as to provide some pro tection against voltage surges and static charges Section 810 of the National Electrical Code ANSI NFPA No 70 1984 provides information with respect to proper grounding of the mast and sup porting structure grounding of the lead in wire to an antenna discharge unit size of grounding conductors location of antenna discharge unit connection to grounding electrodes and requirements of the grounding electrode NOTE TO CATV SYSTEM INSTALLER This reminder is provided to call the CATV Cable TV system installer s atten tion to article 820 40 of the NEC that provides guidelines for proper grounding and in particular specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the ground ing system of the building as close to the point of cable entry as possible CAUTION RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK DO NOT OPEN Installation Location m To assure proper operation and to avoid the potential for safety hazards place the unit on a firm and level sur face When placing the unit on a shelf be certain that the shelf and any mounting hardware can support the weight o
21. he appropriate markings to indicate listing with UL CSAor other appropriate testing agency standards Questions about running cables inside walls should be referred to your installer or a licensed electrical contractor who is familiar with the NEC and or the applicable local building codes in your area Installation and Connections When connecting wires to the speakers be certain to observe proper polarity Remember to connect the negative or black wire to the same terminal on the receiver and the speaker Similarly the positive or red wire should be con nected to the like terminal on the HK3270 and speaker We also recommend that the length of cable used to connect speaker pairs be identical For example use the same length piece of cable to connect the front left and front right or surround left and surround right speakers even if the speakers are a different distance from the HK3270 NOTE While most speaker manufacturers adhere to an industry convention of using black terminals for negative and red ones for positive some manufacturers may vary from this configuration To assure proper phase and optimal performance consult the identification plate on your speaker or the speakers manual to verify polarity If you do not know the polarity of your speaker ask your dealer for advice before proceeding or consult the speaker s manufacturer Connect the speakers using the following steps 1

24. ion on the tuner memory System IE Preset Stations Selector Press this button to select stations that have been entered into the preset memory See page 15 for more information on tuner programming FM Mode Press this button to select the stereo or mono mode for FM tuning In the STEREO mode a Stereo indicator will illuminate in the Information Display Z and stereo reception will be provided when sta tions are transmitting stereo signals In the MONO mode the left and right signals from stereo broadcasts will be mixed together and reproduced through all channels Select MONO for better reception of weak signals Mute Press this button to momentarily silence the speaker output of the HK3270 Front Panel Controls 9 Volume Control Turn the knob clockwise to increase volume counterclockwise to decrease the volume EE Volume Mute Indicator This indicator will glow green when the HK3270 is turned on Its position will enable you to judge the relative volume of the unit even when the speakers are muted or turned off When the indicator is pointing towards the left at an 8 o clock position the volume is low when it is pointing to the right as ina 3 o clock position the volume is loud When the unit has been muted pressing the Mute button Fi B the indicator will flash Information Display This display delivers messages and status indications to help you operate the receiver R
25. ions may be removed from the memory using the Preset Clear function outlined below Recalling Preset Stations To manually select a station previously entered in the preset memory press the Numeric Keys JJ that correspond to the desired station s memory location To manually tune through the list of stored preset stations one by one press the Preset buttons on the front panel or remote To automatically scan through the stations entered in the preset memory press the Preset Scan button on the front panel or remote The tuner will run through the list of preset stations stopping for five seconds at each one Press the button again to stop the scan at your desired station Clearing Preset Stations Unwanted preset stations may be erased from the unit s memory to make it easier to tune only those stations you want To remove a preset station from the HK3270 stuner memory first tune to the station using the Preset Scan button KE on the front panel or remote or by entering the preset number directly using the Numeric Keys EJ When the preset station to be removed has been tuned first press the Memory button fil The MEMO and PRESET indi cators in the Information Display will flash and the actual preset number will disappear from the display Next press the Clear button E within five seconds The preset station will be removed from the memory and the action will be con firmed by the brief appeara
26. ll illuminate and flash in the Information Display 2 Within five seconds press the Numeric Keys z corresponding to the location where you wish to store this station s frequency 3 Repeat the process after tuning any additional stations to be preset Auto Preset Preset stations may also be pro grammed automatically for the FM band To automatically enter each sta tion that may be tuned with acceptable quality into the HK3270 s preset memo ries first select the FM band Next press and briefly hold the Auto Preset but ton e until the MEMO and PRESET indicators begin to flash and the station frequency indication begins to increase Release the button and note that the tuner will search the entire FM band and stop briefly at each station that has acceptable signal strength The HK3270 will automatically assign a preset num ber to each station and then search for the next station The automatic scan process will stop when all 30 preset mem ory locations have been filled or the entire FMband has been scanned three times NOTE Using the automatic tuning mode in areas with more than 30 FM stations will completely fill the preset memories and over write any previously memorized presets for either AM or FM stations TIP The automatic scan process may enter stations that you do not wish to retain in the memory or it may enter a station on more than one frequency if the signal is too strong These unwanted stat

29. nce of the word CLEAR and the preset number location in the Information Display That memory location will now be empty and you may program a different station to that location or leave it empty Tape Recording In normal operation the audio source selected for listening through the HK3270 is sent to the Tape Mon Out and Tape 2 Rec Out outputs This means that any program you are listening to may be recorded simply by placing machines con nected to the outputs for Tape Monitor or Tape 2 in the record mode Operation 19 When a tape recorder with separate record and playback heads is used you may monitor the output of the recording by selecting the T Mon ll or Tape 1 9 Note that a red LED will illuminate in the front panel above the T Mon fi to remind you that you are listening to the record playback instead of the actual input source being recorded IMPORTANT NOTE Please make cer tain that you are aware of the copyright restrictions on any material you copy Memory Backup This product is equipped with a memory backup system that preserves tuner pre sets and system configuration informa tion if the unit is accidentally unplugged or subject to a power outage Processor Reset In the rare case where the unit s opera tion or the displays seem abnormal the cause may involve the erratic operation of the system s memory or microprocessor To correct this problem first unplug the unit from the AC wall o
30. o audio source equipment or speakers it is always good practice to unplug the unit from the AC wall outlet This prevents any pos sibility of accidentally sending audio or transient signals to the speakers that may damage them 1 Connect the analog output of a CD player to the CD inputs NOTE When the CD player has both fixed and variable audio outputs it is best to use the fixed output unless you find that the input to the receiver is so low that the sound is noisy or high that the signal is distorted 2 Connect the Play Out jacks of a cas sette deck MD or other audio recorder to the Tape Monitor In jacks Connect the Record Tn jacks on the recorder to the Tape Monitor Out jacks on the HK3270 When the tape deck con nected to these jacks is a three head unit or has off head playback it will be possi bleto monitor the output of the source being recorded 14 3 Connect the output of a second audio recorder VCR or other line level audio device to the Tape 2 Play In jacks Ifa recorder is used connect its Rec In jacks to the matching outputs 4 The output of any electronics product with a line level output such asa TV set satellite receiver or DVD may be connected to the Aux jacks 5 Connect the outputs of a tumtable with a moving magnet cartridge to the Phono inputs To insure that the phono playback is noise free connect the ground wire from the tone arm to the Phono Ground terminal
31. ou have completed the setup and configuration of your newreceiver itis simple to operate and enjoy The follow ing instructions will provide the steps needed to enjoy the HK3270 Install the two supplied AAA batteries in the remote as shown Be certain to observe the and polarity indica tors shown in the bottom of the battery compartment When using the HK3270 for the first time itis necessary to press the Main Power button the front panel to tum the unit on This places the unit in a standby mode as indicated by the amber color of the Power Indicator El Once the unitisin standby you may begin a listening session by pressing the System Power Control E on the front panel or the Main Power On button on the remote Note that the Power Indicator E will tum red then green This will turn the unit on and retum it to the input source that was last used The unit may also be tumed on from standby by pressing any of the Source Selector buttons on the front pad HHH IE B i Operation 17 To tum the unit off at the end of a listening session simply press the System Power Control on the front panel or the Main Power Off button on the remote This places the unit in the Standby mode and the Power Indicator EJ will turn amber to remind you that the unit is ready for operation when a power command is received from the remote Please note that power will still be applied to the Accessory Outlets even
32. tion the indicator will turn green A red indi cator means that the unit is in the Protect mode and should be turned off and then checked for a possible speaker wire short circuit Headphone Jack This jack may be used to listen to the HK3270 s output through a pair of headphones Be certain that the headphones have a standard 5 stereo phone plug Front Panel Controls 8 Speaker 1 Button Press this button to activate the speaker connected to the Speaker 1 output terminals D 3 Speaker 1 Button Press this button to activate the speaker connected to the Speaker 2 output terminals Bass Control Turn this control to modify the low frequency output of the left right channels by as much as 10dB Set this control to a suitable position for your taste and room acoustics Treble Control Turn this control to modify the high frequency output of the left right channels by as much as 10dB Set this control to a suitable position for your taste and room acoustics E Balance Control Turn this control to change the relative volume for the front left right channels i Phono Button Press this button to select the output of a turntable which is connected to the Phono inputs Q Monitor Press this button to listen to the output of a tape recorder connected to the Tape Monitor inputs red LED indicator will illuminate above the button to indicate that the input source is being monitored
33. utlet and wait at least three minutes After the pause reconnect the AC power cord and check the unit s operation If the system still malfunctions a system reset may clear the problem If the system still does not respond it may be necessary to perform a complete reset To reset the system first turn the HK3270 off by pressing the Main Power Switch gI and then releasing it so that it extends out beyond the front panel and the word OFF is visible in red lettering at the top of the switch Next press and hold the T Mon and CD Input Selector buttons gr 8 on the front panel ONLY While holding these buttons in press the Main Power Switch El in until it latches so that the button is flush with the front panel The Information Display will briefly show the word RESET and then return to normal operation Note that when the system is reset in this fashion all tuner presets will be lost and must be reentered If the system is still operating incorrectly there may have been an electronic discharge or severe AC line interference that has corrupted the memory or microprocessor If these steps do not solve the problem consult an authorized Harman Kardon service depot Troubleshooting Guide This unit is designed for trouble free operation Most problems users encounter are due to operating errors So if you have a problem first check this list for a possible solution If the problem persists consult your authorized
