PRESSURE M SENSORS AND EQUIPMENT GUIDE da SCHRADER OE MATCHING QUALITY TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM PARTS 2014 Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems ANATOMY There are currently two main types of tyre pressure monitoring systems in use these are direct and indirect systems HISTORY The first passenger vehicle to use tyre pressure monitors was the Porsche 959 in 1986 The 959 used a hollow spoked magnesium alloy wheel with integrated tyre pressure monitor developed for the PSK Porsche Steuer Kupplung system Tyre pressure monitors remained uncommon until i O the late 90 s when the Firestone Tyre company a aol in the US had to recall several of it s 15 inch tyre models due to over 100 deaths from vehicles Exploded view of a direct system tyre pressure sensor rolling over The roll overs were linked to tyre tread separation caused by low tyre pressures As a result of the deaths and recall the then President Clinton pushed through the TREAD Act The TREAD act mandated the use of suitable tyre pressure monitoring in vehicles under 4 5 DIRECT SYSTEMS use a tyre pressure sensor in tonnes sold in America after September 2007 to each wheel the sensors are made up of a valve alert the driver to under inflated tyres A similar stem which is attached to a sensor body The mandate has been introduced in the EU stating body houses a battery

14. a silicon based pressure all new models produced after 2012 must also be sensor and an RF radio frequency oscillator to equipped with tyre pressure monitors transmit information The system also requires an RF receiver this can be stand alone or integrated PRECAUTIONS into other vehicle electronic systems Each of the sensors periodically triggers a transmission e Sensors can be damaged when a new tyre is fitted due to the location they are mounted of pressure status to the RF receiver This information is then displayed to the driver via a warning symbol or figure if a leak is detected the time between transmissions shortens or becomes continuous to alert the driver to the problem INDIRECT SYSTEMS do not require oca sensors in each wheel as they use existing ABS sensors to calculate pressure loss not actual pressures The pressure loss is calculated by measuring the rotational speed of the wheels and using pre stored values as reference One of the major downsides to this system is that the driver is only alerted after a 25 loss in pressure ina single wheel The battery life of a tyre pressure sensor should be between 7 10 years but if the tyre has had several flats this will dramatically reduce the life of the battery tis important that if the valve core is replaced it should be replaced with a nickel plated core as a standard brass core will corrode the aluminium stem e indirect systems are u
