1.   of the vehicle  underrides     or goes under   the bed of a truck      It is possible with collision severity at the  marginal level of airbag sensor detection  and activation that only one of your ve   hicle   s two airbags will deploy     For the safety of all occupants  be sure  to always wear seat belts     In a severe frontal impact  sensors detect  deceleration and the system triggers the  airbag inflators  Then a chemical reaction  in the inflators momentarily fills the air   bags with non toxic gas to help restrain  the forward motion of the occupants     When the airbags inflate  they produce a  fairly loud noise and release some smoke  along with non toxic gas  This does not  indicate a fire  Be sure to wash off any  residue as soon as possible to prevent  minor skin irritation     Deployment of the airbags happen in a  fraction of a second  so the airbags must  inflate with considerable force  While the  system is designed to reduce serious inju   ries  it may also cause minor burns or  abrasions and swellings     Parts of the airbag module  steering wheel  hub  dashboard  may be hot for several  minutes  but the airbags themselves will  not be hot  The airbags are designed to  inflate only once     A crash severe enough to inflate the air   bags may break the windshield as the  vehicle buckles  In vehicles with a pas   senger airbag the windshield may also be  damaged by absorbing some of the force  of the inflating airbag      e    1 4         Collision from   
2.   or if it comes  on as you drive  have an authorized dealer service the  air bag system immediately     Driver And Passenger Advanced Front Air Bag  Inflator Units    The Driver and Passenger Advanced Front Air Bag  Inflator Units are located in the center of the steering  Wheel and on the right side of the instrument panel   When the ORC detects a collision requiring the Ad   vanced Front Air Bags  it signals the inflator units  A large  quantity of non toxic gas is generated to inflate the  Advanced Front Air Bags  Different air bag inflation rates    are possible  based on several factors  including the  collision type and severity  The steering wheel hub trim  cover and the upper right side of the instrument panel  separate and fold out of the way as the air bags inflate to  their full size  The air bags fully inflate in about 50 to 70  milliseconds  This is about half of the time it takes to  blink your eyes  The air bags then quickly deflate while  helping to restrain the driver and front passenger     The Advanced Front Air Bag gas is vented through the  vent holes in the sides of the air bag  In this way  the air  bags do not interfere with your control of the vehicle     Supplemental Driver Side Knee Air Bag Inflator  Unit    The Supplemental Driver Side Knee Air Bag unit is  located in the instrument panel trim beneath the steering  column  When the ORC detects a collision requiring the  Advanced Front Air Bags  it signals the inflator units  A  large quantity of n
3.  15 mph  14 to 24 km h   The threshold level  can vary  however  with specific vehicle design  so that  it can be somewhat above or below this range  If your  vehicle strikes something that will move or deform  such  as a parked car  the threshold level will be higher  The  air bag is not designed to inflate in rollovers  side  impacts or rear impacts  because inflation would not  help the occupant     In any particular crash  no one can say whether an air  bag should have inflated simply because of the damage  to a vehicle or because of what the repair costs were   Inflation is determined by the angle of the impact and  how quickly the vehicle slows down in frontal or  near frontal impacts     1997 Pontiac Bonneville    a ea    What makes an air bag inflate     In an impact of sufficient severity  the air bag sensing  system detects that the vehicle is in a crash  The sensing  system triggers a release of gas from the inflator  which  inflates the air bag  The inflator  air bag and related  hardware are all part of the air bag modules inside the  steering wheel and in the instrument panel in front of the  right front passenger     How does an air bag restrain     In moderate to severe frontal or near frontal collisions   even belted occupants can contact the steering wheel or  the instrument panel  Air bags supplement the protection  provided by safety belts  Air bags distribute the force of  the impact more evenly over the occupant   s upper body   stopping the occupant mor

10.  many types of collisions   including rollovers  rear impacts and many side impacts   primarily because an occupant   s motion is not toward  those air bags  Air bags should never be regarded   as anything more than a supplement to safety belts    and then only in moderate to severe frontal or  near frontal collisions     What will you see after an air bag inflates     After an air bag inflates  it quickly deflates  so quickly  that some people may not even realize the air bag  inflated  Some components of the air bag module    the  steering wheel hub for the driver   s air bag  or the  instrument panel for the right front passenger   s   bag    will be hot for a short time  The parts of the bag  that come into contact with you may be warm  but not  too hot to touch  There will be some smoke and dust  coming from vents in the deflated air bags  Air bag  inflation doesn   t prevent the driver from seeing or from  being able to steer the vehicle  nor does it stop people  from leaving the vehicle     When an air bag inflates  there is dust in the air   This dust could cause breathing problems for  people with a history of asthma or other  breathing trouble  To avoid this  everyone in the  vehicle should get out as soon as it is safe to do so   If you have breathing problems but can   t get out  of the vehicle after an air bag inflates  then get  fresh air by opening a window or door     2002 Pontiac Sunfire    In many crashes severe enough to inflate an air bag     windshields a

TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE EM    In addition  the vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental  Driver Side Knee Air Bag mounted in the instrument  panel below the steering column     022635264  Advanced Front Air Bag And Knee Bolster Locations    1     Driver And Passenger Ad  2     Knee Bolster  vanced Front Air Bags  3     Supplemental Driver Side    Knee Air Bag    NOTE  These air bags are certified to the new Federal  regulations for Advanced Air Bags     The Advanced Front Air Bags have a multistage inflator  design  This allows the air bag to have different rates of  inflation based on the severity and type of collision     This vehicle may be equipped with driver and or front  passenger seat track position sensors that may adjust the  inflation rate of the Advanced Front Air Bags based upon  seat position     This vehicle is equipped with a driver and or front  passenger seat belt buckle switch that detects whether  the driver or front passenger seat belt is fastened  The  seat belt buckle switch may adjust the inflation rate of the  Advanced Front Air Bags     This vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Side Air Bag  Inflatable Curtains  SABIC  to protect the driver  front     2013 Chrysler Town  amp  Country       and rear passengers sitting next to a window  The SABIC  air bags are located above the side windows and their  covers are also labeled  SRS AIRBAG     This vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Seat   Mounted Side Air Bags  SAB  to provide enhanced  p

You don   t want the system to  inflate while someone is working on your vehicle  Your  dealer and the service manual have information about  servicing your vehicle and the air bag system  To  purchase a service manual  see    Service and Owner  Publications    in the Index     For up to 10 minutes after the ignition key is  turned off and the battery is disconnected  an air  bag can still inflate during improper service  You  can be injured if you are close to an air bag when  it inflates  Avoid yellow connectors  They are  probably part of the air bag system  Be sure to  follow proper service procedures  and make sure  the person performing work for you is qualified  to do so     The air bag system does not need regular maintenance     Rear Seat Passengers    It   s very important for rear seat passengers to buckle up   Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear  seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are  wearing safety belts     Rear passengers who aren   t safety belted can be thrown  out of the vehicle in a crash  And they can strike others  in the vehicle who are wearing safety belts     Rear Seat Outside Passenger Positions    v       i     i  7  Lap Shoulder Belt    The positions next to the windows have lap shoulder  belts  Here   s how to wear one properly     2002 Pontiac Sunfire    1 28       en THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE 77    Seat Belts And Pregnant Women    We recommend that pregnant women use the seat belts  through
17. aced unless the collision was  minor and the belts show no damage  and continue to operate properly   Seat belt assemblies not in use dur   ing a collision should also be in   spected and replaced if either dam   age or improper operation is noted     e Never carry more people in the ve   hicle than there are seat belts     If the seat belt warning light glows con   tinuously while the ignition is turned     ON    with all doors closed and all seat  belts fastened  it may indicate a mal   function in the system  Have the system  checked by your NISSAN dealer      c   2010 Nissan  Nissan  Nissan model names and the Nissan Logo are Registered Trademarks of Nissan       The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the  mother  When a safety belt is worn properly  it   s more  likely that the fetus won t be hurt in a crash  For  pregnant women  as for anyone  the key to making  safety belts effective is wearing them properly     Right Front Passenger Position    The right front passenger s safety belt works the same  way as the dnver   s safety belt  See    Driver Position      earlier in this section     When the lap portion of the belt is pulled out all the  way  it will lock  If it does  let it go back all the way and  start again     If your vehicle has a center passenger position  be sure  to use the correct buckle when buckling your  lap shoulder belt  If you find that the latch plate will not  go fully into the buckle  see if you are using the buckle  for the center pas
18. ain frontal collisions   Vehicle damage  or lack of it  is not always  an indication of proper air bag operation     When the supplemental air bag inflates  a  fairly loud noise may be heard  followed by    Air bag modules    Diagnosis sensor  unit    release of smoke  This smoke is not harmful  and does not indicate a fire  but care should  be taken not to intentionally inhale it  as it  may cause irritation and choking  Those  with a history of breathing trouble should get  fresh air promptly     The supplemental air bags  along with the use  of seat belts  help to cushion the impact force  on the face and chest of the occupant  They  can help save lives and reduce serious inju   ries  However  an inflating air bag may cause  facial abrasions or other injuries  Air bags do  not provide restraint to the lower body     Seat belts should be correctly worn and the  2 14    1996 Nissan Altima    driver and passenger seated upright as far  as practical away from the steering wheel or  dashboard  Since the air bag inflates quickly  in order to help protect the occupant  the  force of the air bag inflating can increase the  risk of injury if the occupant is too close to or  is against the air bag module during inflation     The supplemental air bag will deflate quickly  after a collision     The supplemental air bags will operate  only when the ignition switch is in the     ON    or    START    position        WARNING       Right after inflation  several supple   mental air bag sys
19. are designed to provide  further protection for the driver and  front passenger when added to the pri   mary protection provided by the seat  belts     In response to a severe frontal impact   the SRS airbags work together with the  seat belts to help prevent or reduce injury  by inflating  in order to decrease the likeli   hood of the driver   s or front passenger   s  head or chest directly hitting the steering  wheel or dashboard  The passenger airbag  is activated even with no passenger in the  front seat     Be sure to wear your seat belt     y13025    The SRS airbag system is designed to  activate in response to a severe frontal  impact within the shaded area between  the arrows in the illustration     There may be the case that the SRS air   bags will not activate with such an impact  in which the occupant wearing the seat  belt correctly would not get serious injury     The SRS airbags will deploy if the severi   ty of the impact is above the designed  threshold level  comparable to an approxi   mate 24 km h  15 mph  collision when  impacting straight into a fixed barrier that  does not move or deform     If the severity of the impact is below the  above threshold level  the SRS airbags  may not deploy     63       However  this threshold velocity will be  considerably higher if the vehicle strikes  an object  such as a parked vehicle or  sign pole  which can move or deform on  impact  or if it is involved in an underride  collision  e g  a collision in which the nose
20. as required  depending on  several factors  including the severity and type of impact     Advanced Front Air Bags and Supplemental Driver Side  Knee Air Bag are designed to provide additional protec   tion by supplementing the seat belts in certain frontal    collisions depending on several factors  including the  severity and type of collision  Advanced Front Air Bags  are not expected to reduce the risk of injury in rear  side   or rollover collisions     The Advanced Front Air Bags and Supplemental Driver  Side Knee Air Bag will not deploy in all frontal collisions   including some that may produce substantial vehicle  damage     for example  some pole collisions  truck  underrides  and angle offset collisions  On the other  hand  depending on the type and location of impact   Advanced Front Air Bags may deploy in crashes with  little vehicle front end damage but that produce a severe  initial deceleration     The side air bags will not deploy in all side collisions   Side air bag deployment will depend on the severity and  type of collision     2013 Chrysler Town  amp  Country    ee THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE 85    Because air bag sensors measure vehicle deceleration  over time  vehicle speed and damage by themselves are  not good indicators of whether or not an air bag should  have deployed     Seat belts are necessary for your protection in all colli   sions  and also are needed to help keep you in position   away from an inflating air bag     The ORC m
