A Programa BUSY Tools and Practices for Business Cycle Analysis A project supported by the Information Society line of 5 Framework Programme Overview BUSY is a software tool designed to guide official statisticians through the main steps of a standard business cycle analysis Its final aim is to help in improving the knowledge of cycles in EU economies Besides several detrending procedures that includes the Hodrick Prescott and the Baxter King filters BUSY gives access to two main techniques for business cycle analysis e aNBER type of approach based on descriptive statistics both in time and frequency domain e dynamic factor models as developed by Forni Hallin Lippi and Reichlin Review of Economics and Statistics 2000 82 4 540 554 Special facilities such as the Bry and Boschan turning point analysis procedure automatic classification of series into leading lagging and coincident ones automatic detection of counter cyclical series aggregation into composite indices are offered All outputs are in HTML format and the product also embodies a graph module A complete on line help system is also available Leader Joint Research Centre the European Commission Staff Gabriele Fiorentini now University of Florence Christophe Planas JRC with the computational support of Gianluca Caporello Partners 1 CS Italia Italy Administrative co ordinator 2 INE Spanish NSI Madrid Enrique Quilis Alfredo Cri
