33. WADA Department of Language and Culture Nara University of Education Nara 630 Japan Received April 30 1992 As for Japanese language teaching research of the functional syllabus is in progress This paper proposes a combination syllabus for Japanese based on the functional syllabus written by van Ek 86 The combination syllabus I show consists of three parts The first part is of course the functional syllabus I show here some Japanese stentence patterns item by item I also present communication strategies The reason why I show sentence patterns is that the traditional teaching method has been based on the structural syllabus The functional syllabus is therefore somewhat difficult for the teachers to understand unless concrete sentences are provided The second part is a topic syllabus The third part is a situational syllabus These two syllabuses were decided by the research of various kinds of textbooks which have been already used Depending on this combination syllabus I propose a table of contents for the ele mentary Japanese textbook In future Td like to improve this syllabus after trying out the textbook
