Institute for Musicology Hungarian Academy of Sciences Database of Traditional Dances 10 12 User s Guide for Film Collection Introduction to Film Collection The Traditional Dance Archive of the Institute for Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences HAS consists of four main collections films with dance recoding photos made during field research manuscripts and dance nota tions of the recorded dances For the time being structures of two main databases has been compiled that of the Film Collection and the Motive Collection One can be changed to the ofher and their content is interrelated As a first step the database of the Film Collection presents 255 identified sec tions of the 16 mm mainly black and white films in Iraditional Dance Archive A film section may present one or more dances depending on how many dancers or couples are dancing on a clip and what the type of their dance IS The selection of the dances followed two main points a fo give a represen tative overview on the types and dialects of the Hungarian traditional dances as stated by Gyorgy Martin b to sere public needs primarily dance educa tion on any level The dances were selected by Zolt n Farkas Batyu P ter L vai and Lujza Ratk The film sections clips are edited to start at the first moment of the dance s and finish when the dancer s stop dancing or the recording was interrupted The Film Collection project was led

6. oma ram Progli Ferenc p 2 0029 01 kanasztaric Gencsapati Vincze Ferenc Gencsapati 3 0094 01 a unidentified The Arch ref Archive reference number syntax follows a form of 4 2 digits and sometimes a letter divided by dots The first 4 digits represent the archive number of the film containing the dance If the number does not reach one thousand four digits the missing digits are substituted by zeros such as 0006 0029 0094 in the picture above The two digits after the number of the film re fer to the serial number of film section in the whole film the number has to be completed by a zero to have two digits if needed In case of the first row in the picture above 0006 01 means the 1 section on film 6 A letter can follow the reference number of the section in case the same dance or its parts have more than one recording or the section consists of more than one dance type connected attacca when recorded e g a slow and a quick cs rd s In the third row of the above picture the dance is identified as 0094 01 a Dances 0094 01 b and 0094 01 c also available in this database All three were made from the same dance but during recording the camera was stopped Ihe column Name of Dance presents the local name of dance used by the original performers In the column Locality the name of the village or city can be read where the performer s of the dance were born The column Performer s in
7. ords forward or backward in the result list of records button BHIAN and reach the first or last records of search result respectively Without a search the Search window can be left by pressing button RERAN Button PT cancels all previously stated search conditions 10 After search the whole database can be reached again by pressing button which clears search fields then button BEZNING Institute for Musicology Hungarian Academy of Sciences Database of Traditional Dances sorting 1 Ihe default order of the main rows in either the whole database or the search result follows an increasing sequence by the Arch ref numbers Ihe order can be changed via the underlined headers of columns oles Ium popup un inis Perfa isti i Play film 2 Pressing Arch ref changes the increasing sequence of archive reference numbers to decreasing order Pressing Arch ref again the order is changes back to an increasing one 3 A first press of Name_of dance or Locality creates an increasing ABC se quence by name of dance or name of the villages Pressing the headers again will change to a decreasing ABC sequence 4 Column header Play film works as Arch ref
