3. 6 1 EAU16244 Starting the engine In order for the ignition circuit cut off system to enable starting one of the following conditions must be met The transmission is in the neutral position The transmission is in gear with the clutch lever pulled and the sid estand up See page 4 18 for more informa tion 1 Turn the key to ON and make sure that the engine stop switch is set to O The following warning lights should come on for a few seconds then go off Fuel level warning light Engine trouble warning light ECA15482 NOTICE If a warning light does not go off see page 4 2 for the corresponding warning light circuit check tral position See page 6 2 The neutral indicator light should come on If not ask a Yamaha dealer to check the electrical circuit Start the engine by pushing the start switch NOTICE For maxi mum engine life always warm the engine up before starting off Never accelerate hard when the engine is cold tecaiii31 If the engine fails to start release the start switch wait a few sec onds and then try again Each starting attempt should be as short as possible to preserve the bat tery Do not crank the engine more than 10 seconds on any one at tempt OPERATION AND IMPORTANT RIDING POINTS 2 Shift the transmission into the neu EAU16671 Shifting 1 Shift pedal 2 Neutral position Shifting gears lets you control the amount of engine

Attach the helmet to the helmet holder and then securely install the seat WARNING Never ride with a helmet attached to the helmet holder since the helmet may hit objects causing loss of control and possibly an acci dent wa10161 To release the helmet from the hel met holder Remove the rider seat remove the hel met from the helmet holder and then install the seat EAU14581 Windshield XV17ATY C XV17ATSY C To suit the rider s preference the wind shield angle can be adjusted and the height can be changed to one of two positions To adjust the windshield angle Loosen the bolts on each side of the windshield 1 1 Windshield 2 Bolt 2 3 4 13 Move the windshield to the desired angle Tighten the bolts to the specified torque To change the windshield height k wo gt A Remove the bolts on each side of the windshield Move the windshield to the other position Install the bolts and tighten them to the specified torque Loosen the screws holding the windshield cover located above the headlight position the cover close to the headlight without touching it and then tighten the screws 1 Windshield cover 2 Screw After adjusting the windshield EWA10920 INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS Securely tighten the windshield bolts Turn the handlebar to the left and right to make sure that the handlebar is not obstructed and that the windshield

8. 7 15 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT CI he air fil l ent 5 Remove the air filter element by eaning the air filter elemen removing the screws and then dis The air filter element should be cleaned connect the hose shown or replaced at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrica tion chart Clean or if necessary re place the air filter element more frequently if you are riding in unusually wet or dusty areas 1 Loosen the air filter case joint clamp screw 1 Bolt 2 Air filter case 3 Disconnect the hose 4 Remove the air filter case cover by removing the screws 1 Air filter element 2 Screw 3 Hose 6 Lightly tap the air filter element to remove most of the dust and dirt and then blow the remaining dirt out with compressed air as shown If the air filter element is damaged replace it 1 Air filter case joint clamp screw 2 Remove the air filter case bolts and then slightly pull the air filter case out 1 2 Screw 3 Air filter case cover 7 16 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT EAU21382 Checking the throttle cable free play 1 Hose 7 Install the air filter element by in serting it into the air filter case 10 Install the air filter case bolts then installing the screws and 11 Push the air filter case onto the air 1 Throttle cable free play then connect the hose shown filter case joint and then tighten

12. check the brake pad wear without hav ing to disassemble the brake To check the brake pad wear check the position of the wear indicators while applying the brake If a brake pad has worn to the point that a wear indicator almost touches the brake disc have a Yamaha dealer replace the brake pads as a set EAU22470 Rear brake pads X oy 1 Brake pad wear indicator groove Each rear brake pad is provided with a wear indicator groove which allows you to check the brake pad wear with out having to disassemble the brake To check the brake pad wear check the wear indicator groove If a brake pad has worn to the point that the wear indicator groove has almost disap peared have a Yamaha dealer replace the brake pads as a set PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT Checking the brake fluid level Front brake 1 Minimum level mark Rear brake 1 Minimum level mark Insufficient brake fluid may allow air to enter the brake system possibly caus ing it to become ineffective 7 25 Before riding check that the brake fluid is above the minimum level mark and replenish if necessary A low brake fluid level may indicate worn brake pads and or brake system leakage If the brake fluid level is low be sure to check the brake pads for wear and the brake system for leakage Observe these precautions When checking the fluid level make sure that the

15. the paint or protective finish MOTORCYCLE CARE AND STORAGE 7 Let the motorcycle dry completely before storing or covering it EWA11131 A WARNING Contaminants on the brakes or tires can cause loss of control Make sure that there is no oil or wax on the brakes or tires e If necessary clean the brake discs and brake linings with a regular brake disc cleaner or ac etone and wash the tires with warm water and a mild deter gent Before riding at higher speeds test the motorcycle s braking performance and cor nering behavior ECA10950 NOTICE ______ e Apply spray oil and wax spar ingly and make sure to wipe off any excess e Never apply oil or wax to the drive belt e Never apply oil or wax to any rubber and plastic parts but treat them with a suitable care product 8 3 e Avoid using abrasive polishing compounds as they will wear away the paint TIP Consult a Yamaha dealer for ad vice on what products to use e Washing rainy weather or humid climates can cause the headlight lens to fog Turning the headlight on for a short period of time will help remove the moisture from the lens Saddlebag cleaning and care Clean the saddlebag on each side us ing a high quality saddle soap Rub the surface of the soap using a damp cloth or sponge to produce a lather and then apply it to the surface of the saddle bags Allow the lather to dry and then polish the saddlebags with a soft c

87. ridge The engine oil level should be checked before each ride In addition the oil must be changed and the oil filter car tridge replaced at the intervals speci fied in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart To check the engine oil level 1 Place the vehicle on a level sur face and hold it in an upright posi tion A slight tilt to the side can result in a false reading 2 Remove the rider seat See page 4 12 3 Start the engine warm it up see TIP below and then turn the en gine off TIP e Warm the engine up for 10 min utes during the summer months and 20 minutes during the winter months f the engine is left idling for more than 20 minutes the engine will stall and the engine trouble warn PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT ing light will come on but this is not a malfunction Simply turn the main switch to OFF and then back to ON to restart the engine and reset the engine trouble warn ing light 4 Wait a few minutes until the oil set tles remove the oil filler cap wipe the dipstick clean insert it back into the oil filler hole without screwing it in and then remove it again to check the oil level TIP The engine oil should be between the minimum and maximum level marks 1 Engine oil filler cap 1 Dipstick 2 Maximum level mark 3 Minimum level mark 5 If the engine oil is at or below the minimum level mark add sufficient oil of the re
88. rm the following steps to pro tect the cylinders piston rings etc from corrosion a Remove the spark plug caps and spark plugs b Pour a teaspoonful of engine oil into each spark plug bore c Install the spark plug caps onto the spark plugs and then place the spark plugs on the cylinder head so that the electrodes are grounded This will limit spark ing during the next step d Turn the engine over several times with the starter This will coat the cylinder walls with oil e Remove the spark plug caps from the spark plugs and then install the spark plugs and the spark plug caps WARNING To prevent damage or injury from sparking make sure to ground the spark plug elec trodes while turning the en gine over tewaioss1 Lubricate all control cables and the pivoting points of all levers and pedals as well as of the side stand centerstand MOTORCYCLE CARE AND STORAGE 5 Check and if necessary correct the tire air pressure and then lift the motorcycle so that both of its wheels are off the ground Alterna tively turn the wheels a little every month in order to prevent the tires from becoming degraded in one spot 6 Cover each muffler outlet with a plastic bag to prevent moisture from entering them 7 Remove the battery and fully charge it Store it in a cool dry place and charge it once a month Do not store the battery in an ex cessively cold or warm place less than 0 C 30 F or more
