1. Depending on the model you purchased either 128 MB of memory is preinstalled in one of the two available memory module bays 128 MB x 1 or 256 MB of memory is preinstalled utilizing both memory module bays 128 MB x 2 You can replace both memory modules with optional 256 MB memory modules to increase memory up to 512 MB For memory upgrades use only PC133 CL2 SDRAM SO DIMMs gold lead contacts A Make sure you observe the proper safety precautions when you install memory modules in your notebook See the bulleted list below Be careful when adding memory Mistakes when installing or removing a memory module may cause a malfunction Precautions and Procedures The procedures described below assume you are familiar with the general terminology associated with personal computers and with common safety practices required for using and modifying electronic equipment Disconnect your system from its power source and from any telecommunications links networks or modems before you open the system or follow any of the procedures described below Personal injury or equipment damage may result from failure to take these precautions Electrostatic discharge ESD can damage memory modules and other components Perform the procedures described below only at an ESD workstation If such a station is not available do not work in a carpeted area and do not handle materials that produce or hold static electricity cellophane wrappers fo

Battery Indicator Description 1 Indicates the status of the battery pack in the battery bay on the right Side of the notebook 2 Indicates the status of the battery pack in the multipurpose bay on the left side of the notebook Battery Indicator Description Light Status On The notebook is using battery power Single blink The battery is running out of power Double blink The battery is charging Off The notebook is using AC power Connecting a Power Source To remove the battery pack 1 Push the battery bay cover down to open it 2 Pull out the battery pack Removing the battery pack 3 Push in and lift up the battery bay cover until it clicks A You will lose data if you remove the battery pack while the notebook is on and not connected to the AC adapter or if you remove the battery while the notebook is in a power saving mode Notes on the battery To determine the remaining battery charge see Displaying Battery Information in the online User Guide for more information When the battery power is running low both the battery and power indicators blink When the notebook is directly connected to AC power and has a battery pack in the battery bay it uses power from the AC outlet 2 See Using a Second Battery Pack in the online User Guide for information on installing and charging a battery pack in the multipurpose bay Keep the battery pack in the notebook while it is directly connect
3. and Peripheral Devices My floppy disk drive optional cannot write to a floppy disk Check that the optional external floppy disk drive is properly connected to your notebook See Connecting an External Floppy Disk Drive in the online VAIO Notebook User Guide for more information Q Ifthe floppy disk is write protected disable the write protect feature or use a floppy disk that is not write protected My optical disc drive is not playing my CD or DVD properly 2 Check that the label of the disc is facing up 2 Ifthe disc requires software check that the software is installed according to the manufacturer s instructions A dirty or damaged disc may cause the notebook to stop responding while it tries to read the disc If necessary restart the notebook remove the disc and then check it for dirt or damage If you see video but can not hear audio check all of the following Check that your optical disc drive does not have the mute setting enabled Check the volume setting in the audio mixer 2 If you are using external speakers check the volume settings and then check the connections between your external speakers and the notebook Click Start then Control Panel then System and then Device Manager Check that the correct drivers are installed properly Do not use adhesive labels to identify the CD The label may come off while the disc is in use in the optical disc drive and cause the
4. jjj_j_j_ Using Power Saving Modes gt If you are still unable to shut down the notebook press the power button and hold it for more than four seconds This operation may result in data loss Using Power Saving Modes When you use a battery as the source of power for your notebook you can take advantage of power management settings to conserve battery life In addition to the normal operating mode which allows you to turn off specific devices your notebook has two distinct power saving modes Standby and Hibernate When using battery power be aware that the notebook automatically enters Hibernate mode if the remaining battery charge drops below 5 percent regardless of the power management setting you previously select gt If the battery level falls below 10 percent you should either attach the AC adapter to recharge the battery or shut down your notebook and insert a fully charged battery Normal Mode Normal mode is the normal state of your notebook when it is in use The power indicator displays green when your notebook is in this mode To save power you can turn off a specific device such as the LCD or the hard disk drive Standby Mode In Standby Mode the notebook saves the current state of the system in RAM and switches off power to the CPU The amber power indicator flashes in this mode To activate Standby mode To activate Standby mode press the power button and release it immediately You can also use the Power
