1. CUTTING A FALLEN TREE BUCKING Bucking is the term used for cutting a fall en tree to the desired log size AAWARNING Do not stand on the log being cut Any portion can roll caus ing loss of footing and control Do not stand downhill of the log being cut IMPORTANT POINTS e Cut only one log at a time e Cut shattered wood very carefully sharp pieces of wood could be flung to ward operator Use a sawhorse to cut small logs Never allow another person to hold the log while cutting and never hold the log with your leg or foot e Do not cut in an area where logs limbs and roots are tangled Drag logs into a clear area before cutting them by pulling out exposed and cleared logs first 10 BUCKING TECHNIQUES WARNING If saw becomes pinched or hung in a log don ttry to force it out You can lose control of the saw result ing in injury and or damage to the saw Stop the saw drive a wedge of plastic or wood into the cut until the saw can be re moved easily Restart the saw and care fully reenter the cut Do not use a metal wedge Do not attempt to restart your saw when it is pinched or hung in a log Use a wedge to remove pinched saw Turn saw OFF and use a plastic or wooden wedge to force cut open Overcutting begins on the top side of the log with the bottom of the saw against the log When overcutting use light downward pressure Overcutting Undercutting Undercutting involves cutting on the2. e Finish the pruning operation by using an overcut so that the stump of the limb protrudes 1 to 2 inches 3 5 cm from the trunk of the tree a cut First cut es of way N ard cut 1 to 2 in 3 5 cm from trunk of tree MAINTENANCE CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES AWARNING Disconnect power source before performing maintenance Fill in dates as you complete regular service Before Use After Use Service Dates Every 15 min Check for damaged worn parts Val Check for loose fasteners parts Check chain tension Check chain sharpness Check guide bar Check bar and chain oil level DAA Inspect and clean unit amp labels Clean guide bar groove Va Va GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS The warranty on this unit does not cover items that have been subjected to oper ator abuse or negligence To receive full value from the warranty the operator must maintain unit as instructed in this manual Various adjustments will need to be made periodically to properly maintain your unit Improper mainte nance may cause damage to the unit and possible injury to the operator or by standers CHECK FOR DAMAGED OR WORN PARTS Contact an authorized service dealer for replacement of worn or damaged parts NOTE It is normal for a small amount of oil to appear under the saw after motor stops Do not confuse this with a leaking oil tank e Trigger Switch Ensure the trigg

7. and if damaged have repaired by an authorized service dealer MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOOD WORKING ORDER e Have all chain saw service performed by an authorized service dealer except the items listed in the MAINTENANCE section of this manual e Make certain saw chain stops moving when trigger switch is released Keep the handles dry and clean and free from oil and grease Keep oil cap and fasteners securely tightened Nonconforming replacement compo nents or the removal of safety devices may cause damage to the unit and pos sible injury to the operator or bystand ers Use only Poulan PRO accessories and replacement parts as recom mended Never modify your saw Maintain chain saw with care Keep unit sharp and clean for better and safer performance Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories Unplug the chain saw from the power source when not in use before servic ing and when changing accessories and attachments such as saw chain and guard Check for damaged parts Before fur ther use of the chain saw a guard or other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its in tended function Check for alignment of moving parts binding of moving parts breakage of parts mounting and any other conditions that may affect its op eration A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service dea
8. and repair parts as necessary Keep the chain out of dirt and sand Even a small amount of dirt will quickly dull a chain and increase the possibility of kickback Practice cutting a few small logs using the following steps This will help you get the feel of using your saw before you begin a major sawing operation e Squeeze trigger switch and allow unit to reach full speed before cutting e Begin cutting with the saw frame against the log Keep the motor at full speed the en tire time you are cutting Release the trigger switch as soon as the cut is completed allowing the motor to stop Keep the cord away from the cutting area Position cord so it will not be caught on branches and the like dur ing cutting e To avoid losing control when cut is complete do not put pressure on saw at end of cut e Stop motor before setting saw down TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES AA WARNING Check for broken or dead branches which can fall while cut ting causing serious injury Do not cut near buildings or electrical wires if you do not know the direction of tree fall nor cut at night since you will not be able to see well nor during bad weather such as rain snow or strong winds etc Ifthe tree does make contact with any utility line the utility company should be noti fied immediately e Carefully plan your sawing operation in advance e Clear the work area You need a clear area all around the tree so you can
9. have secure footing e The chain saw operator should keep on the uphill side of the terrain as the tree is likely to roll or slide downhill af ter it is felled e Study the natural conditions that can cause the tree to fall in a particular direc tion such as e The wind direction and speed e The lean of the tree The lean of a tree might not be apparent due to uneven or sloping terrain Use a plumb or level to determine the direction of tree lean Weight and branches on one side e Surrounding trees and obstacles Look for decay and rot If the trunk is rotted it can snap and fall toward the operator Make sure there is enough room for the tree to fall Maintain a distance of 2 1 2 tree lengths from the nearest per son or other objects Noise can drown out a warning call Remove dirt stones loose bark nails staples and wire from the tree where cuts are to be made Ye So Plan a clear retreat path FELLING LARGE TREES 6 inches in diameter or larger The notch method is used to fell large trees A notch is cut on the side of the tree in the desired direction of fall After a felling cut is made on the opposite side of tree the tree will tend to fall in the direction of the notch NOTE If tree has large buttress roots remove them before making the notch If using saw to remove buttress roots keep saw chain from contacting ground to prevent dulling of the chain NOTCH CUT AND FELLING TREE e Make
10. oil water or sharp edges To avoid the possibility of electric shock avoid body contact with any grounded conductor such as metal fences or pipes Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter GFCI protection should be provided on circuit or outlet to be used Receptacles are available having built in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety Inspect chain saw cords periodi cally and if damaged have repaired by an authorized service dealer GUARD AGAINST KICKBACK Follow all safety rules to help avoid kick back and other forces which can result in serious injury r Kickback Path Clear The Working Are WARNING Avoid kickback which can result in serious injury Kickback is the backward upward or sudden for ward motion of the guide bar occurring when the saw chain near the upper tip of the guide bar contacts any object such as a log or branch or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut Contacting a foreign object in the wood can also result in loss of chain saw control Rotational Kickback can occur when the moving chain contacts an object at the upper tip of the guide bar This con tact can cause the chain to dig into the object which stops the chain for an instant The result is a lightning fast re verse reaction which kicks the guide bar up and back toward the operator Pinch Kickback can occur when the the wood closes in and pinches the moving saw chain in the cut along
11. the top of the guide bar and the saw chain is suddenly stopped This sudden stop ping of the chain results in a reversal of the chain force used to cut wood and causes the saw to move in the opposite direction of the chain rotation The saw is driven straight back toward the opera tor Pull In can occur when the moving chain contacts a foreign object in the wood in the cut along the bottom of the guide bar and the saw chain is suddenly stopped This sudden stopping pulls the saw forward and away from the opera tor and could easily cause the operator to lose control of the saw REDUCE THE CHANCE OF KICKBACK The following precautions should be fol lowed to minimize kickback Recognize that kickback can happen With a basic understanding of kickback you can reduce the element of surprise which contributes to accidents e Never let the moving chain contact any object at the tip of the guide bar Keep working area free from obstruc tions such as other trees branches rocks fences stumps etc Eliminate or avoid any obstruction that your saw chain could hit while cutting When cutting a branch do not let the guide bar contact another branch or oth er objects around it Keep saw chain sharp and properly tensioned A loose or dull chain can in crease the chance of kickback Follow manufacturer s chain sharpening and maintenance instructions Check ten sion at regular intervals but never with engine running Make sure bar cl

NSION under the SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS section ATTACH THE EXTENSION CORD TO YOUR CHAIN SAW To prevent disconnection from unit se cure extension cord to power cord as shown in the following illustration Power Cord AD 25 A Extension Cord BEFORE STARTING SAW AAWARNING Be sure to read the electrical safety information in the safety rules section of this manual before you begin If you do not understand the elec trical safety information do not attemptto use your unit Seek help from someone that does understand the information or call the customer assistance help line at 1 800 554 6723 GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OIL The bar and chain require lubrication The chain oiler provides lubrication to the chain and guide bar Be sure to fill the bar oil tank before each cutting session Lack of oil will quickly ruin the bar and chain Too little oil will cause overheating shown by smoke coming from the chain and or discoloration of the bar For maximum guide bar and chain life we recommend you use Poulan or Poulan PRO chain saw bar oil If Poulan or Poulan PRO bar oil is not available you may use a good grade SAE 30 oil until you are able to ob tain Poulan or Poulan PRO brand Use a funnel to fill the tank Replace oil cap se curely Check oil level after every 15 min utes of operation CHAIN BRAKE Ensure chain brake is disengaged by pull ing the front hand guard back toward the front handle as far as poss

15. aking function control CAUTION The chain brake must be checked several times daily The motor must be running when performing this procedure This is the only instance when the saw should be placed on the ground with the motor running Place the saw on firm ground Grip the rear handle with your right hand and the front handle with your left hand Squeeze trigger switch and allow motor to reach full speed Activate the chain brake by turning your left wrist against the hand guard without releasing your grip around the front handle The chain should stop immediately Inertia activating function control WARNING When performing the following procedure the motor must not be running and the saw must be un plugged from the power source Grip the rear handle with your right hand and the front handle with your left hand Hold the chain saw approximately 14 35 cm above a stump or other wooden sur face Release your grip on the front han dle and use the weight of the saw to let the tip of the guide bar fall forward and contact the stump When the tip of the bar hits the stump the brake should activate CUTTING METHODS OPERATING TIPS e Check chain tension before first use and after 1 minute of operation See CHECK CHAIN TENSION in the MAINTE NANCE section Cut wood only Do not cut metal plas tics masonry non wood building mate rials etc Stop the saw if the chain strikes a for eign object Inspect the saw
16. amp nuts are securely tightened Begin and continue cutting at full speed If the chain is moving at a slower speed there is greater chance of kickback oc curring Use extreme caution when re entering a cut Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of the bar plunge cuts Watch for shifting logs or other objects that could close a cut and pinch or fall onto chain e Use the specified Reduced Kickback Guide Bar and Low Kickback Chain Avoid Pinch Kickback e Be extremely aware of situations or ob structions that can cause material to pinch the top of or otherwise stop the chain Do not cut more than one log at a time Do not twist the saw as the bar is with drawn from an undercut when bucking Avoid Pull In e Always begin cutting with the saw at full speed and the saw housing against wood e Use wedges made of plastic or wood Never use metal to hold the cut open MAINTAIN CONTROL e A good firm grip on the saw with both hands will help you maintain control Don t let go Grip the rear handle with your right hand whether you are right or left handed Wrap the fingers of your left hand over and around the front handle bar and your left thumb under the front handlebar Keep your left arm straight with the elbow locked Right No A Left Hand e Position your left hand on the front han dlebar so it is in a straight line with your right hand on the rear handle when making bucking cuts Stand sl

29. o not stand on lad ders platforms a log or in any position 11 which can cause you to lose your bal ance or control of the saw IMPORTANT POINTS e Watch out for spring poles Spring poles are small size limbs which can whip to ward you or pull you off balance Use extreme caution when cutting small size limbs e Be alert for spring back from any branches that are bent or under pres sure Avoid being struck by the branch or the saw when the tension in the wood fibers is released e Frequently clear branches out of the way to avoid tripping over them LIMBING e Limb a tree only after it is cut down e Leave the larger limbs underneath the felled tree to support the tree as you work e Start at the base of the felled tree and work toward the top cutting branches and limbs Remove small limbs with one cut e Keep tree between you and the chain e Remove larger branches with the cut ting techniques described BUCKING WITHOUT A SUPPORT e Always use an overcut to cut small and freely hanging limbs Undercutting could cause limbs to fall and pinch the saw PRUNING AA WARNING Limit pruning to limbs shoulder height or below Do not cut if branches are higher than your shoulder Get a professional to do the job e Make your first cut 1 3 of the way through the bottom of the limb This cut will make the limb sag so that it falls easily on the second cut Next make a second cut all the way through the limb
