Do not operate the unit with the screen removed Remove logs handling carefully by holding gently at each end Gloves are recommended to prevent skin irritation from ceramic If the skin becomes irritated wash gently with soap and water Refer to manual for correct log placement CLEANING SERVICING Periodic Cleaning Do not use cleaning fluid to clean logs or any part of heater Logs Brush with soft bristle brush or vacuum with brush attachment Vacuum loose particles and dust from the front and rear burner control and piezo Inspect burner s and air intake hole Remove lint or particles with vacuum External case should be dusted and wiped with a wet soapy cloth Annual Cleaning Inspection Inspect and clean burner air intake holes Inspect and clean all burner ports e Inspect ODS pilot for operation and accumulation of lint at air intake holes Verify flame pattern and log placement for proper operation Verify smooth and responsive ignition of main burner and rear burner FLAME APPEARANCE In normal operation at full rate after 15 minutes the following flame appearance should be observed FLAMES The flames behind log 1 and in between log 2 should be yellow with a blue base See Below Figure 12 Figure 12 Flames Natural Gas and LP Gas HEATER ASSEMBLY PARTS LIST Pedestal Pedestal Trim Pedestal Brace Firebox Bottom Firebox Firebox Inner

6. position Close access door OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Wait 30 seconds before readjusting the heater when the control has been turned down to a lower setting MATCH LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS If the pilot will not light using the piezo ignitor you can light the pilot with a match First locate the pilot The pilot is located between the two burner tubes on the right end facing the unit inside the firebox To light pilot with a match move the gas control knob pg 12 to the pilot position and hold down Light match and place near pilot Once pilot is lit continue to hold the knob for about ten seconds Then follow steps 7 thru 10 on page 12 CHECKING FLAME APPEARANCE Flames from the pilot and burner should be visually checked when the heater is installed In addition a periodic visual check of the flames should be made PILOT FLAME The pilot flame should always be present when If the pilot flame does not touch the thermo the heater is in operation and should just touch couple then the main burner is unlikely to func the top of the thermocouple tip FIGURE 10 tion reliably FIGURE 11 FIGURE 11 Incorrect Shape of Pilot Flame Annual inspection and cleaning by your dealer or qualified service technician is recommended to prevent malfunction and or sooting Remove front screen see page 11 Carefully lift screen from locating stubs and set aside during cleaning Refer to instructions on page 11 for installation of screen

TALLATION SEQUENCE 1 Installthe rearlog 2 onthe rearsetoflocators Visually check to verify the logis securely placed on the locators 2 Install the frontlog 1 onthe frontlocators Visually check to verify the log is securely placed on the locators 3 Install the left and right cross twigs as illustrated onthe locator pins provided in the front and rear logs Holes providedinthe bottom ofthe cross twigs should allowthem to seat completely over these pins WARNING Failure to position the parts in accordance with these dia grams or failure to use only parts specifically approved with this heater may result in property damage or personal injury FIGURE 8 Log Set Assembly The positioning of the logs is critical to the safe and clean operation of this heater Sooting and other problems may result ifthe logs are not properly and firmly situated in the appliance Never add additional logs or embellishments such as pine cones vermiculite or rock wool to the heater FRONT SCREEN Thefrontscreen must bein place atall times when the appliance is operating Donotobstructthescreenedopenings ofthe heater 10 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Avoid any drafts that alter the burner flame patterns Do notallow fans to blow directly into the heater Do not place ablower inside burn area of firebox Ceiling fans may create drafts that alter burner flame patterns Sooting and improper burning will occur This vent free gas hea
17. and an unconfined space is defined as a space whose volume is not less than 50 cubic feet per 1 000 BTU per hour 4 8m per kw of the aggregate input rating of all appliances installed in that space Rooms communicating directly with the space in which the appliances are installed through openings not fur nished with doors are considered a part of that unconfined space INSTALLATION The following formula can be used to determine the maximum heater rating per the definition of unconfined space BTU HR L1 L2 Ft x W Ft x H Ft x 1000 50 Consider two connecting rooms with an open area between with the following dimensions See Fig 2 Example L1 15 1 2 Ft L2 12 Ft W 12 ft H 8Ft 50 52800 BTU HR If there were a door between the two rooms the calculation would be based only on the room with the heater BTU HR 15 1 2 x 12 x 8 x 1000 50 229760 BTU HR FIGURE 2 When installing the appliance directly on carpeting tile or other combustible material other than wood flooring the appliance must be installed on a metal or wood panel extending the full width and depth of the appliance If the area in which the heater may be operated is smaller than that defined as an unconfined space or if the building is of unusually tight construction provide adequate combustion and ventilation air by one of the methods described in the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223 1 Section 5 3 or applicable local codes Ensure the min
18. carefully before installing or trying to operate this heater WARNING Any change to this heater or its controls can be dangerous Improper installation or use of the heater can cause serious injury or death from fire burns explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning 1 10 11 CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING Early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to the flu with headaches dizziness and or nausea If you have these signs obtain fresh air immediately Have the heater serviced as it may not be operating properly The installation must conform with local codes or in the absence of local codes with the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223 1 This heater shall not be installed in a bedroom or bathroom WARNING Improper installation adjustment alteration service or maintenance can cause injury or property damage Refer to this owner s manual Installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer service agency or the gas supplier To prevent malfunction and or sooting a vent free gas heater should be cleaned at least annually by a professional service person More frequent cleaning may be required due to excessive lint from carpeting etc It is imperative that control compartments burners and circulating air passageways be kept clean Correct placement of the ceramic fiber logs is necessary to avoid problems with sooting Sooting can settle on surfaces outside the heater and cause discoloration See the appropriat
