1. Make sure the equipment shutoff valve is fully open Push in gas control knob and slightly turn clockwise to the OFF position see figure 19 Wait five 5 minutes Then smell for gas including near the floor If you smell gas STOP Follow B in the safety information above If you do not smell gas go to the next step Push in and turn control knob counterclockwise to PILOT IGN Press in control knob for five 5 seconds Note The first time that the heater is operated after connecting the gas supply the control knob should be depressed for about 30 seconds This will allow air to bleed from the gas system ignitor Button Control Knob Figure 19 With control knob pressed in push down and release the ignition button This will light pilot If needed keep pressing igniter button until pilot lights Keep control knob pressed in for 30 seconds after lighting pilot After 30 seconds release control knob Ignitor Electrode Thermocouple Pilot Burner Figure 20 If pilot does not stay lit refer to Troubleshooting pages 14 amp 15 Also contact a qualified service person of gas supplier for repairs If control knob does not pop up when released contact a qualified service person or gas supplier for repairs m Installation instructions and Owner s Manual 8 When the pilot is lit turn control Know counter clockwise to heating level The main burner should light 9 To select the

IMPORTANT Vent free heaters add moisture to the air Although this is beneficial installing heater in rooms without enough ventilation air may cause mildew to form from too much moisture See Fresh Air for Combustion and Ventilation pages 3 through 5 INSTALLATION NOTICE This heater is intended for the use as supple mental heat Use this heater along with your primary heating system Do not install this heater as your primary heat source If you have a central heating system you may run system s circulating blower while using heater This will help circulate the heat throughout the house In the event of a power outage you can use this heater as your primary heat source for the duration of the outage N WARNING A qualified service person must install heater Follow all local codes CHECK GAS TYPE Use only LP gas If your gas supply is not LP gas do not install heater Call dealer where you bought heater for proper type heater THIS INSTALLATION REQUIRES Before installing heater make sure you have the items listed below e Piping check local codes e Sealant resistant to LP_Gas e Equipment shutoff valve e Ground joint union e Test gauge connection e Sediment trap e Tee joint e Pipe wrench A CSA AGA certified equipment shutoff valve with 1 8 NPT tap is an acceptable alternative to test gauge connection Purchase a CSA AGA certified equipment shutoff valve from your dealer See Accessories page 1

MODELS BF20LPT BF3SOLPT IR2Z0LPT and IR3OLPT These heaters have a control valve with a thermostat sensing bulb This results in the greatest heater comfort and may result in lower bills LOCAL CODES Install and use heater with care Installation must conform to local codes or in the absences of local codes use the latest edition of National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z2223 1 NFPA 54 UNPACKING 1 Remove heater from carton 2 Remove all protective packaging applied to heater for shipment 3 Check heater for any shipping damage If heater is damaged promptly inform dealer where you bought heater FRESH AIR FOR COMBUSTION AND VENTILATION ts WARNING This heater shall not be installed in a confined space or unusually tight construction unless provisions are provided for adequate com bustion and ventilation air Read the following instructions to insure proper fresh air for this and other fuel burning appliances in your home ESTABLISHING ADEQUATE VENTILATION The following are excerpts from National Fuel Gas Code NFPA 54 ANSI 2223 1 Section 5 3 Air for Combustion and Ventilation All spaces in homes fall into one of the three following ventilation classifications 1 Unusually Tight Construction 2 Unconfined Space 3 Confined Space This heater must not be installed in a confined space or unusually tight construction unless provisions are provided for adequate combustion and ventilation air The information

6. combustion enters the heater 5 If heater shuts off do not relight until you provide fresh outside air If heater keeps shutting off it requires servicing 6 Turn off and unplug heater and let cool before servicing Only a qualified service person should service and repair heater 7 Do not run heater e Where flammable liquids or vapors are used or stored e During dusty conditions 8 Before using furniture polish wax carpet cleaner or similar products turn heater off If heated the vapors from these products may create a white powder residue within burner box or on adjacent walls or furniture 9 Do not use heater if any part has been underwater Immediately call a qualified service technician to inspect the room heater and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control which has been underwater 10 Operating heater above elevations of 4 500 feet could cause pilot ODS to shutdown heater 11 Always run heater with control knob in a locked position Never set control knob between locked positions Poor combustion and higher levels of carbon monoxide may result if control knob is left between locked positions DANGER Carbon monoxide poisoning may lead to death Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble the flu with headaches dizziness or nausea If you have these signs the heater may not be working properly Get fresh air at once Have heater serviced Some

8. desired heat level turn the tem perature setting knob counterclockwise to between 1 amp 7 THERMOSTAT CONTROL OPERATION FOR IR20LPT IRSOLPT The thermostatic control used simply turns on and off the burner FOR BF20LPT BF30LPT The thermostatic control used modulates the flame size as the temperature gets closer to set point then it turns off the burner upon reaching temperature The burner will cycle back on when room temperature drops below the set temperature The control knob can be set to any heat level between 1 and 7 Selecting the HI setting will cause the burner to remain on Note The thermostat sensing bulb measures the temperature of air near the heater cabinet This may not always agree with room temperature depending on housing construction insulation location room size open air temperature etc Frequent use of your heater will let you determine your own comfort levels TO TURN OFF GAS TO APPLIANCE Shutting Off Heater 1 Turn control knob clockwise to the OFF posi tion 2 Turn off all electrical power to the appliance if servicing is to be preformed 3 Turn off equipment shutoff valve SHUTTING OFF BURNER ONLY PILOT STAYS LIT 1 Turn control knob clockwise to the PILOT IGN position INSPECTING BURNER Check pilot flame pattern and burner flame pattern often PILOT FLAME PATTERN Figure 21 show a correct pilot flame pattern Figure 22 shows an incorrect pilot flame pattern The incor

10. on pages 3 through 5 will help you classify your space and provide adequate ventilation Unusually Tight Construction lf your home meets all of the three following criteria you must provide additional fresh air See Ventilation Air from Outdoors page 5 Unusually tight construction is defined as construction where a Walls and ceilings exposed to the outside atmo sphere have a continuous water vapor retarder with a rating of one perm 6 x 10 kg per pa sec m or less with openings gasketed or sealed and b Whether stripping has been added on openable windows and doors and c Caulking or sealants are applied to areas such as joints around windows and door frames between wall ceiling joints between wall panels at penetra tions for plumbing electrical and gas lines and at other openings If you home does not meet all of the three criteria above see Determing the Type of Heater Location Space page 4 Confined Space and Unconfined Space The National Fuel Gas Code NFPA 54 ANSI 2223 1 defines a confined space as a space whose volume is less than 50 cubic feet per 1 000 Btu per hour 4 8 m per kW of the aggregate input rating of all appliances installed in that space and an unconfined space as a space whose volume is not less than 50 cubic feet per 1 000 Btu per hour 4 8 m per kW of the aggregate input rating of all appliances installed in that space Rooms communicating directly with the space in which the a
11. people are more affected by carbon monoxide than others These include pregnant women persons with heart or lung disease or anemia those under the influence of alcohol and those at high altitudes Propane LP Gas Propoane LP gas is odorless An odor making agent is added to propane LP gas The odor helps you detect a Propane LP gas leak However the odor added to propane LP gas may be present even though no odor exists Make certain you read and understand all warnings Keep this manual for reference It is your guide to safe and proper operation of this heater 2 Installation instructions and Owner s Manual 70575 Rev C 8 05 Product Features ignitor Button Control Knob Burners Heater Cabinet Front Panel Figure 1 SAFETY DEVICE This heater has a pilot with an Oxygen Depletion Sensor ODS safety shut off system The ODS pilot shuts off the heater if there is not enough fresh air IGNITION SYSTEM PIEZO BF10LP IR10LP The heater is equipped with a piezo manual ignitor This system requires no matches batteries or other source to light heater Electronic BF20LPT BF30LPT IR2ZO0LPT IRSOLPT The heater is equipped with an electronic manual ignitor This system requires no matches or other source to light heater but does require one AA battery to operate ignitor To install or replace battery unscrew the ignitor cap red button insert battery and replace cap THERMOSTATIC CONTROL ON THERMOSTAT
12. to OFF unless knob is pushed in slightly Do not force 4 Wait five 5 minutes Then smell for gas including near the floor If you smell gas STOP Follow B in the safety information above If you do not smell gas go to the next step 5 Pushin gas control know slightly and turn counterclockwise to PILOT IGN and depress for five 5 seconds Note The first time that the heater is operated after connecting the gas supply the control knob should be depressed for about 30 seconds This will allow air to bleed from the gas system 6 Pushin control knob and rotate control knob back to OFF position then rotate counterclock wise to PILOT IGN position This will light pilot If needed gently keep rotating control knob back and forth while depressed until pilot lights 7 Keep control knob depressed in for ten 10 seconds after lighting pilot If pilot goes out repeat steps 4 5 6 and 7 e If pilot does not stay lit refer to Troubleshooting pages 14 amp 15 Also contact a qualified service person or gas supplier for repairs e f control knob does not pop up when released contact a qualified service person or gas supplier for repairs 8 FOR IR10LP When the pilot is lit turn the control knob to LO position to light heater Leave on LO position until first burner tile has turned bright red FOR BF10LP When the pilot is lit turn the control knob to HI position to light heater 9 FOR IR1

15. 7 LOCATING HEATER This heater is designed to be mounted on the wall The heater can also be located on a non combustible floor away from a wall by using the floor mounting stands included with the heater If installed on combustible flooring such as carpeting tile or other combustible material other than wood flooring the heater must be placed on a wood panel the full width and depth of the appliance For convenience and efficiency install the heater e Where there is easy access for operation inspection and service e Inthe coldest part of the room e If planning to use fan locate heater near an electrical outlet CAUTION If you install the heater in a home garage e Heater pilot and burner must be at least 18 inches above floor e Locate heater where moving vehicle will not hit it CAUTION This heater creates warm air currents These currents move heat to wall surfaces next to heater In stalling heater next to vinyl or cloth wall covering or oper ating heater where impurities such as tobacco smoke aromatic candles cleaning fluids oil or kerosene lamps etc are present in the air may discolor walls A WARNING Never install the heater In a bathroom In a bedroom IR20LPT IR30LPT BF20LPT or BF30LPT In a recreational vehicle Where curtains furniture clothing or other flammable objects are less than 36 inches from the front top or sides of the heater As a fireplace insert In high traffic ar
16. 8 NPT tap is an acceptable alternative to test gauge connection Purchase the CSA AGA certified equip ment shutoff valve from your dealer See Accessories page 17 IMPORTANT Install an equipment shutoff valve in an accessible location The equipment shutoff valve is for turning on or shutting off the gas to the appliance Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male threads This will prevent excess sealant from going into pipe Excess sealant in pipe could result in clogged heater fuel train CAUTION Use pipe joint sealant that is resistant to LP Gas Install sediment trap in supply line as shown in figure 12 Locate sediment trap where it is within reach for cleaning Asediment trap traps moisture and contami nants This keeps them from going into heater If sediment trap is not installed or is installed improperly heater may not run correctly IMPORTANT Hold pressure regulator with wrench when connecting it to gas piping and or fittings CHECKING GAS CONNECTIONS WARNING Test all gas piping and connections for leaks after installing or servicing Correct all leaks at once N WARNING Never use an open flame to check for a gas leak Apply a mixture of liquid soap and water to all joints Bubbles forming show a leak Correct all leaks at once PRESSURE TESTING GAS SUPPLY PIPING SYSTEM Test pressure in Excess of 1 2 psig 3 5kPa 1 Disconnect appliance with its appliance main gas valve control valve and

27. ing it must be replaced prior to operating the heater WARNING Failure to keep the primary air opening s of the burner s clean may result in sooting and property damage CLEANING ODS PILOT AND BURNER e Use as vacuum cleaner pressurized air or small soft bristled brush to clean CLEANING BURNER PILOT AIR HOLE INLET We recommend that you clean the unit ever 2 500 hours of operation or every three months We also recom mend that you keep the burner tube and pilot assembly clean and free of dust and dirt To clean these parts we recommend using compressed air no greater than 30 psig This can be done by using a vacuum cleaner in the blow position using compressed air in a can please follow the directions on the can If you don t follow directions on the can you could damage the burner or pilot assem bly In addition the directions that follow should also be followed 1 Shut off the unit including the pilot Allow the unit to cool for at least thirty minutes 2 Inspect burner and pilot for dust and dirt 3 Blow air through the port slots and holes in the burner A yellow tip on the pilot flame indicates dust and dirt in the pilot assembly To clean the pilot assembly find the small pilot air inlet hole about two inches from where the pilot flame comes out of the pilot assembly see figure 25 With the unit off lightly blow air through the air inlet hole You may blow through a drinking straw if com pressed air is n
