2.  static electricity from your body before you touch any of  your computer s electronic components  You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface     1  Follow the instructions in  Before Working Inside Your Computer     2  Remove the keyboard    3  Remove the display assembly    4  Usea plastic scribe to pry the two screw covers and three display bumpers out of the screw holes located on the front of the bezel     5  Remove the five M2 5 x 5 mm screws located on the front of the bezel        NOTICE  Carefully separate the bezel from the top cover to avoid damage to the bezel     6  Starting at the bottom of the display panel  use your fingers to separate the bezel from the top cover and lift the inside edge of the bezel away from  the top cover     Display Panel    Removing the Display Panel    A CAUTION  Before performing the following procedures  read the safety instructions in your Owner s Manual     A CAUTION  To prevent static damage to components inside your computer  discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of  your computer s electronic components  You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface     1  Follow the instructions in  Before Working Inside Your Computer     2  Remove the keyboard    3  Remove the display assembly    4  Remove the display bezel    5  Remove the two M2 x 3 mm screws on the each side of the display panel   6  Lift the display panel out of the top cover     7  Press in both sides of the top flex cable connec

11. er        You have read the safety information in your Dell    Owner s Manual       A component can be replaced by performing the removal procedure in reverse order     Recommended Tools    The procedures in this document may require the following tools       Small flat blade screwdriver    Phillips screwdriver     Small plastic scribe     Hex nut driver      Flash BIOS update program floppy disk or CD    Turning Off Your Computer       NOTICE  To avoid losing data  save and close any open files and exit any open programs before you turn off your computer     1  Shut down the operating system     a  Save and close any open files  exit any open programs  click the Start button  and then click Turn Off Computer     b  Inthe Turn off computer window  click Turn off     The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process finishes     2  Ensure that the computer and any attached devices are turned off  If your computer and attached devices do not automatically turn off when you shut  down your operating system  press and hold the power button for 4 seconds     Before Working Inside Your Computer    Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help ensure your own personal safety     A CAUTION  Before you begin any of the procedures in this section  follow the safety instructions in the Owner s Manual     CAUTION  Handle components and cards with care  Do not touch the components or contacts on a card  Hold a card by 
12. in the fully open position before seating the microprocessor module  Seating the microprocessor module properly in  the ZIF socket does not require force        NOTICE  A microprocessor module that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the microprocessor and  ZIF socket     1  Align the pin 1 corner of the microprocessor module so that it points to the triangle on the system board  and insert the microprocessor module into the  ZIF socket     When the microprocessor module is correctly seated  all four corners are aligned at the same height  If one or more corners of the module are higher  than the others  the module is not seated correctly        NOTICE  Hold the microprocessor down while turning the cam screw to prevent intermittent contact between the cam screw and microprocessor     2  Tighten the ZIF socket by turning the cam screw clockwise to secure the microprocessor module to the system board   3  Wipe the thermal grease off of the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly with a clean paper towel   4  Squeeze all of the contents of the thermal grease packet  provided with the kit  on to the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly     5  Replace the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly     6  Replace the EMI shield   7  Replace the keyboard     8  Update the BIOS using a flash BIOS update program CD     Back to Contents Page    Back to Contents Page    Display    Dell    Inspiron    1150 Service Manual      Display As
13. its edges or by its metal  mounting bracket  Hold a component such as a processor by its edges  not by its pins     NOTICE  Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer  Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not  covered by your warranty     oOo O  gt     NOTI CE  When you disconnect a cable  pull on its connector or on its strain relief loop  not on the cable itself  Some cables have a connector with  locking tabs  if you are disconnecting this type of cable  press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable  As you pull connectors apart  keep    them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins  Also  before you connect a cable  ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and  aligned        NOTICE  To avoid damaging the computer  perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer     1  Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched     2  Turn off your computer     3  If the computer is connected to a docking device  docked   undock it  See the documentation that came with your docking device for instructions        NOTICE  To disconnect a network cable  first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug it from the network wall jack     4  Disconnect any telephone or telecommunication lines from the computer     5  Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets  and then press the power

16. nnect the modem cable to the modem        NOTICE  The cable connectors are keyed for correct insertion  do not force the connections     2  Align the modem with the screw holes  and press the modem into the connector on the system board     3  Install the two M2 x 3 mm screws to secure the modem to the system board     4  Replace the cover and tighten the captive screw     Mini PCI Card    Removing the Mini PCI Card    A  CAUTION  Before working inside your Dell    computer  read the safety instructions in your Owner s Manual     CAUTION  To prevent static damage to components inside your computer  discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of  your computer s electronic components  You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface     1  Follow the instructions in  Before Working Inside Your Computer      2  Turn the computer over  loosen the captive screw  labeled  C   in the modem Mini PCI card cover  and lift the cover away from the computer        captive screw    2       3  Disconnect the Mini PCI card from the attached cables           4  Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing taps on each end of the Mini PCI card connector until the card pops up     5  Lift the Mini PCI card out of its connector     Installing the Mini PCI Card       NOTICE  To avoid damaging the Mini PCI card  never place cables on top of or under the card      NOTICE  The connectors are keyed to ensure correct insertion  If you feel resistance  check the 
17. nt data loss  shut down your computer before removing the hard drive  Do not remove the hard drive while the computer is on  in  standby mode  or in hibernate mode     NOTICE  Hard drives are extremely fragile  even a slight bump can damage the drive     oOo O  gt       NOTE  Dell does not guarantee compatibility or provide support for hard drives from sources other than Dell     1  Follow the instructions in  Before Working Inside Your Computer      2  Turn the computer over  and remove the two M2 5 x 5 mm hard drive screws     M2 5 x 5 mm screws  2        NOTICE  When the hard drive is not in the computer  store it in protective antistatic packaging  See  Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge  in your  Owner s Manual     3  Slide the hard drive out of the computer     Installing the Hard Drive    A CAUTION  Before you begin any of the procedures in this section  follow the safety instructions in your Owner s Manual     1  Remove the new drive from its packaging     Save the original packaging for storing or shipping the hard drive        NOTICE  Use firm and even pressure to slide the drive into place  If you use excessive force  you may damage the connector     2  Insert the drive into the bay  and push the hard drive until it is fully seated in the bay   3  Replace and tighten the two M2 5 x 5 mm screws   4  Use the Operating System CD to install the operating system for your computer     5  Use the Drivers and Utilities CD to install the drivers and utilities for yo
18. odule    A CAUTION  Before performing the following procedures  read the safety instructions in your Owner s Manual     CAUTION  To prevent static damage to components inside your computer  discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of  your computer s electronic components  You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface     NOTICE  Press and hold the microprocessor down by applying slight pressure to the center of the microprocessor while turning the cam screw to  prevent intermittent contact between the cam screw and microprocessor        NOTICE  To avoid damage to the microprocessor  hold the screwdriver so that it is perpendicular to the microprocessor when turning the cam screw     1  Follow the instructions in  Before Working Inside Your Computer    2  Remove the keyboard     3  Remove the EMI shield     4  Remove the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly        NOTICE  When removing the microprocessor module  pull the module straight up  Be careful not to bend the pins on the microprocessor module     5  To loosen the ZIF socket  use a small  flat blade screwdriver and rotate the ZIF socket cam screw counterclockwise until it comes to the cam stop     The ZIF socket cam screw secures the microprocessor to the system board  Take note of the arrow on the ZIF socket cam screw           6  Use a microprocessor extraction tool to remove the microprocessor module     Installing the Microprocessor Module       NOTICE  Ensure that the cam lock is 
19. ons in your Owner s Manual     A CAUTION  To prevent static damage to components inside your computer  discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of  your computer s electronic components  You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface     1  Follow the instructions in  Before Working Inside Your Computer    2  Remove the keyboard    3  Remove the EMI shield    4  Disconnect the fan power cable from the system board     5  Loosen in consecutive order the four captive screws  labeled  1  through  4   that secure the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly to the system  board     1  captive screws  4        2  fan power cable  connector    6  Pull up the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly by the pull tab to lift the assembly out of the system board     Installing the Microprocessor Thermal Cooling Assembly    NOTICE  Before you install the replacement microprocessor thermal cooling assembly  remove the mylar that covers the thermal grease on the  assembly     1  If you are installing a replacement microprocessor thermal cooling assembly  remove the mylar that covers the thermal grease on the assembly  If you  are installing the assembly that you removed in the previous section     a  Wipe the thermal grease off of the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly with a clean paper towel   b  Squeeze all of the contents of the thermal grease packet  provided with the kit  on to the microprocessor thermal cooling assembly     2  Place the back of the
