1. STABILIZER GAS CANS SPARK PLUGS GRASS CATCHERS FOR SIDE DISCHARGE LAWN MOWERS AIR FILTERS WHEELS ENGINE OIL securely Use the correct tools as neces sary to ensure proper tightness All parts such as nuts washers bolts etc neces sary to complete the assembly have been placed in the parts bag TO REMOVE LAWN MOWER FROM CARTON Remove loose parts included with mower Cut down two end corners of carton and lay end panel down flat e Remove all packing materials except padding between upper and lower handle and padding holding operator presence control bar to upper handle Roll lawn mower out of carton and check carton thoroughly for additional loose parts HOW TO SET UP YOUR LAWN MOWER TO UNFOLD HANDLE IMPORTANT Unfold handle carefully so as not to pinch or damage control cables Raise handles until lower handle section locks into place in mowing position Remove protective padding raise upper handle section into place on lower handle and tighten both handle knobs Remove handle padding holding operator presence control bar to upper handle e Your lawn mower handle can be adjusted for your mowing comfort Refer to Adjust Handle in the Service and Adjustment section of this manual Operator presence control bar Upper handle Sy Mowing position Lower handle OPERATION KNOW YOUR LAWN MOWER READ THIS OWNER S MANUAL AND SAFETY RULES BEF
2. mower housing free of built up grass and trash See Cleaning in MAINTENANCE section of this manual The special mulching blade will recut the grass clippings many times and reduce them in size so that as they fall onto the lawn they will disperse into the grass and not be noticed Also the mulched grass will biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn Always mulch with your highest engine blade speed as this will provide the best recutting action of the blades Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet Wet grass tends to form clumps and interferes with the mulching action The best time to mow your lawn is the early aftemoon At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut area will not be exposed to the direct sun For best results adjust the lawn mower cutting height so that the lawn mower cuts off only the top one third of the grass blades If the lawn is overgrown it will be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving clumps of mulched grass For extremely heavy mulching reduce your width of cut by overlapping previously cut path and mow slowly Certain types of grass and grass condi tions may require that an area be mulched a second time to compietely hide the Clippings When doing a second cut mow across or perpendicular to the first cut path Change your cutting pattem from week to week Mow north to south one week the

6. in the Operation section of this manual DISCHARGE GUARD The discharge guard attached to the discharge opening of your lawn mower is provided to prevent the possibility of injury resulting from objects being thrown out of the discharge opening into the operator mowing position If the discharge guard becomes damaged it should be replaced REAR DEFLECTOR The rear deflector attached between the rear wheels of your mower is provided to minimize the possibility that objects will be thrown out of the rear of the mower into the operator mowing position If the deflector becomes damaged it should be replaced TO ADJUST HANDLE The handle can be mounted in a high or low position The mounting holes in the bottom of lower handle are off center for raising or lowering the handle Remove upper handle and all parts attached to lower handle e Remove hairpin cotters from lower handle bracket mounting pin e Squeeze lower handle in to remove it from mounting pins e Turn lower handle over to raise or lower handle Squeeze lower handle in and position holes onto mounting pins on handle bracket Reassemble upper handie and all parts removed from lower handle Mowing a Mowing O position 3 position t far ne Bo Lower Rotate DNA handle VA ENGINE ENGINE SPEED Your engine speed has been factory set Do not attempt to increase engine speed or it may result in personal injury If you believe
7. to discharging operation you must install the discharge deflector attachment included with your mower TO CONVERT TO DISCHARGING MOWER Your mower is shipped ready to be used as a mulcher To convert to bagging or discharging Lift discharge guard and remove mulcher plate Mower can now be used for side discharging or optional grass catcher can be attached e To return to mulching operation simply reinstall mulcher plate as shown ACAUTION Do not run your lawn mower without discharge guard approved grass catcher or mulcher plate in place Discharge guard Mulcher plate BEFORE STARTING ENGINE OIL Your lawn mower is shipped without oil in the engine e Be sure mower is level and area around oil fill is clean e Remove engine oil plug and fill to the top of slot in filler hole NOTE Allow oil to settle down into engine for accurate reading Engine holds 20 ozs of oil For type and grade of oil to use see ENGINE in maintenance section of this manual Pour oil slowly Do not over fill Check oil level before each use Add oil if needed Reinstall engine oil plug and tighten Change the oil after every 25 hours of operation or each season You may need to change the oil more often under dusty dirty conditions ADD GASOLINE e Fill fuel tank Use fresh clean regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane Do not mix oil with gasoline Purchase fuel in quantities that ca

13. e damage from running low on oil Change the oil after every 25 hours of operation orat least once a year if the lawn mower is not used for 25 hours in one year Check the crankcase oil level before starting the engine and after each five 5 hours of continuous use Tighten oil plug securely each time you check the oil level TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place wire where it cannot come in contact with spark plug Be sure lawn mower is on level surface Oil will drain more freely when warm Catch oil in a suitable container Remove bottom oil drain plug After oil has drained completely replace oil drain plug and tighten securely Refill engine with oil Pour slowly Do not over fill Fill to top of slot inside of filler hole Reconnect spark plug wire to spark plug Drain plug AIR FILTER Your engine will not run properly and may be damaged by using a dirty air filter Replace the air filter every year more often if you mow in very dusty dirty conditions Do not wash air filter TO CHANGE AIR FILTER Remove the air filter by turning counter clockwise to the stop and pull away from collar Remove filter from inside of cover Clean the inside of the cover and the collar to remove any dirt accumulation Insert new filter into cover Put air filter cover and filter into collar aligning the tab with the slot Push in on cover and turn clockwise to tight
14. en Turn counter clockwise to remove Turn clockwise to tighten Air fitter Air filter cover 49 MUFFLER Inspect and replace corroded muffler as it could create a fire hazard and or damage SPARK PLUG Change your spark plug each year to make your engine start easier and run better Set spark plug gap at 030 inch CLEANING IMPORTANT For best performance kiip mower housing free of built grass and trash Clean the underside of your mower after each use ACAUTION Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place wire where it cannot come in contact with the spark plug Clean the underside of your lawn mower by scraping to remove build up of grass and trash Clean engine often to keep trash from accumulating A clogged engine runs hotter and shortens engine life Keep finished surfaces and wheels free of all gasoline oil etc We do not recommend using a garden hose to clean lawn mower unless the electrical system muffler air filter and carburetor are covered to keep water out Water in engine can result in shortened engine life SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS A CAUTION Before performing any service and adjustments e Release control bar and stop engine Make sure the blade and all moving parts have completely stopped e Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place where it cannot come in contact with plug LAWN MOWER TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT See TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT
15. iming steps In warmer weather over priming may cause flooding and engine will not start If you do flood engine wait a few minutes before attempting to start and do not repeat priming steps Gasoline filler cap Engine oil plug MOWING TIPS Under certain conditions such as very tall grass it may be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving clumps of grass clippings It may also be necessary to reduce ground speed and or run the lawn mower over the area a second time For extremely heavy cutting reduce the width of cut by overlapping previously cut path and mow slowly For better grass bagging and most cutting conditions the engine speed should be set in the fast position For side discharge lawn mowers cutting in a counter clockwise direction starting at the outside of the area to be cut spreads grass clippings more evenly and puts less load on the engine To keep clippings off of walkways flower beds etc make the first cuts in a clockwise direction Pores in cloth grass catchers can become filled with dirt and dust with use and catchers will collect less grass To prevent this regularly hose catcher off with water and let dry before using Keep top of engine around starter clear and clean of grass clippings and chaff This will help engine air flow and extend engine life MULCHING MOWING TIPS IMPORTANT For best performance keep

18. ments or repairs We recommend a wide vision safety mask over spectacles or standard safety glasses HOW TO USE YOUR LAWN MOWER ENGINE SPEED CONTROL The engine speed was set at the factory for optimum performance Speed is not adjustable ENGINE ZONE CONTROL ACAUTION Federal regulations require an engine control to be installed on this lawn mower in order to minimize the risk of blade contact injury Do not under any circumstances attempt to defeat the function of the operator control The blade turns when the engine is running Your lawn mower is equipped with an operator presence control bar which requires the operator to be positioned behind the lawn mower handle to start and operate the lawn mower TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT Raise wheels for low cut and lower wheels for high cut Adjust cutting height to suit your require ments Medium position is best for most lawns To change cutting height squeeze adjuster lever toward wheel Move wheel up or down to suit your requirements Be sure all wheels are in the same setting NOTE Adjuster is properly positioned when plate tab inserts into hole in lever Also 9 position adjusters if so equipped allow lever to be positioned between the plate tabs FORESIGHT IS BETTER THAN MO SIGHT Piate tab Lower wheels for high cut AA Se Raise wheels for low cut NOTE Your lawn mower has been shipped ready for mulching operation To convert
19. mizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during storage Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage container Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer container Run engine at least 10 minutes after adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reach the carburetor Do not drain the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer ENGINE OIL Drain oil with engine warm and replace with clean engine oil See ENGINE in the Maintenance section of this manual CYLINDER Remove spark plug e Pour one ounce 29 ml of oil through spark plug hole into cylinder Pull starter handle slowly a few times to distribute oil Replace with new spark plug 15 OTHER IMPORTANT Never cover mower while Do not store gasoline from one season to engine and exhaust areas are still warm another ACAUTION Never store the lawn Replace your gasoline can if your can mower with gasoline in the tank inside a starts to rust Rust and or dirt in your building where fumes may reach an open gasoline will cause problems flame or spark Allow the engine to cool e If possible store your unit indoors and before storing in any enclosure cover it to give protection from dust and dirt Cover your unit with a suitable protective cover that does not retain moisture Do not use plastic Plastic cannot breathe which allows condensation to form and will cause your unit to rust TROUBLESHOOTING CHART PROBLEM CAUSE CORR
